Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Finn - good name.
Poe Dameron - ugh.
Rey - ennnnnnh.
Kylo Ren - ugh.

I love Star Wars but they have the stupidest names anywhere. Han. Luke. Leia. Lando. These are real people names. Kylo? Rey? Poe? Ugh.

On the other hand, naming the ball droid BB is frickin' awesome cuz my last name is Beebe :D :D :D

They'll grow on you if the movie is good.

The names are fine, they fit right in with the general goofiness of the SW names.
All they need now is the movie & characters attached to those names to be good.

I'm pretty sure I'd remember if I'd ever met a real person named Lando.

(Asked if there was significance to the numbering, Abrams replied: “YES.”

So, any ideas? I got nothing.

The "Rey rides a speeder" card, 74 matches Luke in his landspeeder number 74 from the original US topps run.

Number 11, BB-8 on the run matches Artoo is Imprisoned by Jawas card 11.

53 Poe Cameron in his X-Wing matches "The Battle in outer space!" card 53.

The rest of the cards don't seem to hold any correlations with the original Topps run in the US. My guess would be they are thematically similar scenes in the numbers that much, but the rest are "new" with no special significance.

The only one that doesn't feel right to me is Poe Dameron..

Actually to me Poe Dameron sounds like a name that could have come straight out of ANH. Although probably more as a background character (or another friend of Luke's) than one of the leads.

Poe Dameron fits right in with the X-wing pilots of ANH - Luke Skywalker, Wedge Antilles, and Biggs Darklighter.

While this doesn't have anything to do with the new movie specifically, I came across this interesting documentary about the development of the original lightsaber props. It's rather amusing to see the behind the scenes versions of the actors breaking them.

I'm a little curious about the scene around the 2:20-2:25 mark, which looks to me like basic filming of the end of the Kenobi/Vader duel. The sabers aren't properly colored in, but what's interesting to me is that Vader's blow looks far lower than it appears in the final cut and actually looks like it can slice through the robe.

I agree. Not that I and others won't get used to it as the film gets closer and after we've seen it, but right now that's the weakest and least interesting of all the revealed character.

We've heard much worse Star Wars names, though, and in all the other films and TV series.

Damn. I totally should have attached this to my last post.

Han, Leia, and Lando are real people names? Or maybe they've just been in circulation for 30+ years.

As for card numbering, the Topps cards weren't always in chronological order. For the most part they were but not always.

For how many of these characters will their full names even be mentioned in the film? Wedge's was never mentioned. Same with Biggs. Hell, same with Leia.

Just read an interview with Hamill, apparently BB-8 is not cg

[Laughs] I’m sure he loved the new little droid that’s a rolling ball. I’m sure he wants it under the tree this Christmas. They never cease to amaze me with what they’re able to come up with, you know? I said, “How are you ever gonna top R2-D2, the most adorable droid in movie history?”

And then they have this new one. I can’t even tell you his name, but you saw it in the trailer. [Editor’s note: the name of the droid has been revealed as BB-8.] And when they were demonstrating how they did this thing, live on set — because it’s not CGI, that’s a live prop — I was just amazed. They let me play around with it. [Laughs] I was running it all around at the creature shop up in Pinewood. I’m telling you, it’s an absolute delight.

And not having thought that I’d ever go back there, to go back into that world, is just – I get the chills. It’s just so much fun.

Yeah I had a strong suspicion that the droid was real. CG has gotten really good recently, but the way it bounced along the ground just looked too believable to be CG. And it's not really that hard to imagine they found a way to create a remote-controlled rolling droid.

Or, as we saw with 3PO in TPM, it could have been a puppet that was controlled from above or behind, and then they simply erased the puppeteer later.

It's good to know that the BB-8 droid isn't another CGI creation that kind of looks out of place in a real, stark environment like a desert. The more practical effects they can use for things like droids the better the film will look, especially if live actors are supposed to be interacting with those droids. When they're in the socket of a Rebel starfighter and zipping through the vacuum of space while dodging enemy fire that's one thing, but try to keep the terrestrial droids as practical props that the actors can touch and stand next to.

A practical action figure of BB-8 might be a little difficult to pull off unless it were a small remote control toy, although I suppose you could put it on a base with the rotating ball section of the droid being a part you could spin with your finger. Not a whole lot of articulation on a droid like this, but they could make figures of him if they design them just right.
