Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Some of the original props used during the first three movies were so obviously repurposed, everyday tools and other objects that you can occasionally chuckle at how quaint they look in close-up and much more detailed photographs. Han's Corellian bloodstripe pants in ANH are supposed to have been everyday blue jeans or trousers from the Seventies with red stripes painted or sewn down the sides of each leg.

Most (if not all) of the blaster props were modified from functioning military surplus. At Docking Bay 94 you can see some blanks flying out of the guns as the stormtroopers try to "blast them."

Yes. Han Solo's DL-44 Heavy Blaster pistol is formed from (I believe) a German Mauser.

Both the Stormtroopers' Blastech E-11 rifle, and the Rebel blaster pistol were formed (I believe) from a British submachine gun, the Sterling... perhaps Mk V.

The stormtrooper heavy blaster rifle is formed (I believe) from a German MG (maybe an MG-42?).

I loved how they modified those weapons to look all sci-fi'ified. :)

If I recall correctly, speaking about another film franchise, the M-41A pulse rifle from Aliens is formed from a cut down SPAS-12 shotgun.

Again, these are vague recollections. I'm sure I could Google them, but I like to see if my memory still at least vaguely works. :D

*game show announcer voice* Let's play everyone's favorite Star Wars blaster related game-name that blaster! ;)

Han's blaster was a modified Mauser C96
Good job:techman:

The E-11 stormtrooper blaster is a Sterling Mark V variant with the side magazine feed. Again, nicely done :techman:

The heavy stormtrooper rifle is a modified MG-34 German Machine gun. Darn close.

That's not bad.

And let's not forget that Lak Sivrak in the original versions of ANH's Cantina scene was just a rubber wolfman mask and not prosthetic makeup of any sort being worn by an extra. George had to cut corners and use a lot of existing props and real world materials to shoot the original film, right down to the clothes and alien masks that he had some background actors wear.

This really stands out when you watch the Blu-Ray versions. The cheaper quality of the fabrics and costumes in ANH are quite evident when you see them in crystal clear high definition.

The fingerprints on Vader's helmet in ANH is what I noticed.

Yup. I also never noticed that the eye globes on Vader's mask were a reddish-orange until the Blu-ray.

We should probably have two -- a spoiler-free thread, and a spoiler thread. There's a surprising amount of leaked info floating around out there, but we're not discussing any of it so far.

I'm all for keeping and maintaining two distinct threads. It gives posters an option, and like Gep said one can remain spoiler-free for those who don't want to risk finding out half or most of the plot as soon as the film opens (or even before).

Made the two threads. Forgot to add a poll to the "grading and discussion" thread, so hopefully we will exceed the 8,000 post mark in the next 40 or so days and then we will have reason to create another....

I can't wait for the 4K versions, imagine how they will look then.

I wonder how the decision to shoot on film will affect the overall look of TFA. In some cases, I think a slightly-less-than-supersharp image can add to the aesthetic of a film.

Along the lines of how HighDef reveals faults in ANH, I was watching The Great Pumpkin on BluRay and was struck by how much I noticed the details of the various animation cells and layers. To the point of distraction.
