Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Maybe Finn isn't a Jedi? Maybe he just is in possession of the lightsaber and decides to ignite it to try and defend himself? Not up to date on what's known, just speculating.

But I too suspect that Kylo is a Darth Maul-type. The real villain will be someone else.

That's certainly possible. Han uses Luke's lightsaber in Empire to gut the tauntaun, after all.

But I too suspect that Kylo is a Darth Maul-type. The real villain will be someone else.

I've been operating under that assumption myself, though we may not know who the true antagonist is until the second film.

They're looking for a new lead actress for Episode VIII. I wonder what this means for Daisy Ridley and Rey? Is it going to be a second female lead, a recast Rey, or will we be getting a new character instead of Rey? I could see Maslany or Cooke replacing Ridley, but Rodriguez might be a bit more complicated.

I'm kinda surprised they would put that casting notice out so soon, since it seems to suggest pretty strongly that the current female lead, Daisy Ridley, won't be continuing into the next movie. And that something unfortunate will likely end up happening to her character...

Which would be too bad, because I was really hoping we'd get to see how her character developed and evolved over the course of the trilogy. :(

It's also making it more apparent that the new "Luke" of this trilogy is actually Finn, and not Rey, as most people seemed to assume.

I'm actually kind of curious, based upon the teaser bits that we have seen and other BTS details, of what happens to Finn and Kylo.

The idea of two of two inexperienced combatants attempting to fight with lightsabers in a forest at night.Since Kylo is not a Sith I will be curious to see what is training is supposed to be.

I think way too much is being read into this. We have, at a minimum, 2 male leads in the first film. Why can't there be 2 female leads in the second?

No one ever said he wasn't force-sensitive. ;) There's a difference between Dark Side and full blown Sith.

He might not be a Sith, but he is a Knight of Ren, and it sounds like they're somehow inspired by or related to Vader. So I have a feeling he's probably fairly well trained. If Ren is a title like Darth was, then he probably had to earn it.

Yeah it's possible, but the fact they're looking for someone with the same basic age, look, and body type as Ridley, and who can pass a chemistry test with Boyega, makes me think there might be something else going on.

Unless Rey somehow becomes a villain by the end or something, which seems kinda unlikely to me.

One other possibility that just occurred to me, is that they could simply be adding a love triangle to EPVIII. The Force Awakens puts Rey and Finn together, and we see them become, or maybe almost become, a couple. Then in EPVIII they bring in Mystery G,irl who shares an attraction with Finn, to add a bit of complication to the relationship.

"Master Luke, you have taught me the ways of the Jedi. I know we are supposed to renounce our physical desires, but I have very strong feelings for you."

"Rey, no, I am your .... uncle!"

But the way he's holding the weapon does not look like someone who would randomly handle something as part of a defense. Han in ESB was a clear example of an untrained person using the lightsaber, but this clip sells the idea that Finn knows something. How much is unknown.

Probably. Only this time, I would not be surprised to see the apprentice is able to kill the master while being a Sith (instead of Vader's last second change of heart).

Han was slicing up a space donkey.

One does not have to be a trained kendo master to instinctively know how to hold a katana once fight or flight kicks in.

The look of utter terror on his face suggests he's in way over his head and doesn't know what he's doing. But it doesn't take a genius to figure out how to hold a laser sword.

Yeah...I can hold a sword and I'm not trained in any way. Maybe I'm wrong but something tells me he's backed into a corner with no option...so be uses the lightsaber. He looks like someone not entirely sure of what they're doing. To me anyway.

Could very well be what sets up Luke's big reveal; he saves Finn's bacon yet recognizes his Force sensitivity and starts to train him.

Yup.

From those few seconds of footage, it seems to me that the lightsaber is basically just a stand-in for the proverbial kitchen knife.
