Star Wars Episode 7 title revealed - "The Force Awakens"

Help me Juan Valdez. You're my only hope.

Seriously, this was the best that they could come up with? The Force Awakens...and I'm supposed to care why?

Though FWIW, A New Hope would have been horribly lame if it had actually been used as the main title of the film when it was released.

The title is rather meaninglessness if the film is good.

Also, given the fact that the Dark Side had dominated the galaxy for many years, the awakening aspect could refer to the balancing of the Force, or a hero's Force potential being recognized, much in the way Luke was found originally in Star Wars (before it was a trilogy ;) ).

So at some point after having been restored to it's proper balance, the Force went to sleep?

I guess all that surrounding, penetrating and binding can get a bit exhausting.
"The Jedi are extinct; their fire has gone out of the universe. You, my friend, are all that's left of their religion."

With the Jedi exterminated, the number of Force-users had dwindled to a handful. Repopulating the Jedi order will be a "Great Awakening," Force-style.

I dunno. "Attack of the Clones" sounded dumb when it was announced and still sounds dumb. This one isn't quite in that territory, but it's a tempting target for jocularity.

The titles are supposed to sound like episodes from an old Republic serial, so they're kind of deliberately cheesy.

That said, this one is pretty "meh".

When did it fall asleep? Or will that be a prequel movie set between 6 and 7?

Episode 8: Oh my God, who is that sleeping next to me?
Episode 9: I think you should leave. Quietly.

I first heard the title and thought "cool!". Then... I dropped in here, heh. Seems as though cynicism is almost mandatory. What would work, "star wars, episode vii: the iniquitous, spectacular evil presence, attacked by the children of light".

;)

I'm having a bad feeling that "The Force Awakens" will entail a ridiculous alteration to the Star Wars mythos.
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Force Has A Bad Feeling About This.

The titles are supposed to sound like episodes from an old Republic serial, so they're kind of deliberately cheesy.
That's exactly what I was going to say-- it evokes that Saturday matinee feeling. And it uses recognizable SW terminology. At least it's not Star Warring Into Darkness. :rommie:

If I'm understanding current rumors right, Luke Skywalker disappeared off the face of the galaxy almost as soon as the victory party at Endor ended. He'd decided (Yoda's "pass on what you have learned" be damned) that the Force was simply too dangerous for anyone to wield, that the temptation to go dark and start killing people was too strong. The only way the Force could truly be balanced was to take it off the table - no more Jedi, no more Sith. And eventually, hopefully, no more war.

So the Star Wars universe we see at the start of Episode VII is one where the Force itself is a fast-fading memory. No one - not even Leia - knows how to sense it, let alone use it.

No one, apparently, except for the cyborg now in charge of the Galactic Empire that nobody knew about back then. His injuries no doubt limit his power significantly (as it did Vader), but he's still got enough of the Force in him to be a threat, and now he's evidently manipulating Daisy Ridley's character (and eventually, Han and Chewbacca) from behind the scenes to lure Luke out of hiding. And once discovered, Luke realizes he's got no choice - either he trains Daisy as a Jedi, or he gives in to this cyborg (or his own inner darkness) and lets the Dark Side rule forever.

Actually, if you look at the logo, the title of the movie is clearly "Star The Force Awakens Wars." Putting the subtitle between the two words of the franchise is a pretty bold gamble, but I suppose the "into Darkness" thing more or less worked for JJ.

And I'm actually okay with the "The Force Awakens." It strikes the right balance between cheese and drama.

Interesting theory... I suppose if the movie is really good and the title fits the story, history won't remember said title as a bad one. But even in the context of this theory, "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Awakening" strikes me as better. The less anthropomorphism of the Force, the better, I suspect.

"The Awakening" would have been much more acceptable, yeah.

The Force Awakens just makes it sound like there's a guiding intelligence behind the Force that's going to be speaking to the characters or something.

The Awakening sounds too generic...but just reworking it to The Awakening of the Force works somewhat better...sounds a bit more dramatic than what they chose.

As for the deliberate B-movie style issue...that works fine if the title sounds a bit corny but conveys something exciting, like The Empire Strikes Back or Attack of the Clones. But A New Hope just sounds boring. Thankfully, being of the generation that was first exposed to that film in the 70s when it was known simply as Star Wars, I never considered that series subtitle to be the "real" title of the movie.
