STAR WARS: Could Jake Lloyd have played a better Anakin in ep2 + ep3?

Re: STAR WARS: Could Jake Lloyd have played a better Anakin in ep2 + e

Of the pool that actually read for the part, Lucas really ought to have given it to Jonathan Brandis. He wouldn't have delivered such a whiny performance in ROTS.

Except Johnathan Brandis died in 2003, had he gotten the part, and still died, he wouldn't have finished filming ROTS

My first thought was that Lloyd would have been a good match for a young Sebastian Shaw.

But I think for Lloyd to have worked as a 20-something Anakin would have required a recasting for Padme as well. Hayden and Natalie made an ideal "Ken and Barbie," but Jake and Natalie not so much, IMO. I think it would have required a rewrite of the Anakin and Padme romance in any event.

Supposedly he hung himself because his career had gone in the toilet. If that's true, if he was cast as Anakin he probably wouldn't have done that.

Everyone criticizes Jake Lloyd's acting, but were Natalie Portman, Hayden however-you-spell-it, Liam Neeson or Samuel L. Jackson significantly better? I suspect the problem lies more with the writing than with the acting.

My wife was just very saddened to learn of Jonathan Brandis's death. She hadn't heard.

Yeah. Neeson, Jackson, and McGregor are usually top notch at what they do in other films. Or at least are not yawn-inducing the way they were in TPM.

While Lloyd's acting may not have been the best, at least he seemed somewhat excited about being there.

Ewan I thought improved in the next two films. He wasn't really given much to do in TPM anyway.

Neeson is great in basically everything he does.

Who knows? He might not have killed himself if he was wrapped up in a 2 movie deal.

There is of course the Clone Wars version of Anakin (voiced by Matt Lanter) who is far less whiny and more mature than the Christensen incarnation. We see more of the 'good friend' that was barely there in the films. Lanter kind of does his own thing, and doesn't try to really replicate Hayden's monotone (Which previous cartoons and video games had done with some other voice actor).

I think of Lanter as Anakin, too. And in real life, he's very good looking, so he would have worked on screen as well.

But Lanter also benefits hugely from TCW's much better writing. The PT didn't put nearly enough effort into getting us to like Anakin before he went all squirrely. With Lanter's Anakin, his eventual fate has much more tragic impact.

I don't believe I heard about it until months after it had happened. Having seen him in a lot of things when I was a kid, it was pretty unsettling. His death didn't get very much media attention, I guess.

I remember comments about Lloyd in 1998 saying that insiders were going that he was 'the worst miscasting in cinema history'-the very first major indication that the film might not be that great. (apart from the made up stuff about fuzzy footage-a rumor that recently cropped up for Transformers 3!)

Maybe like Sofia Copolla (Who also was worst casting in Godfather III-and was also in TPM in a cameo as a handmaiden) Lloyd will somehow redeem himself in another career. I read he's into photography.

Possible, but, maybe not, you never know with someone depressed enough to commit suicide. Two movies did come out after his death, and 1 in 2003 (not sure how big the parts were), so he was still working some

It's a shame, I enjoyed his roles, and was very saddened to learn of his death

I still remember watching the "The Beginning" documentary on the Episode One DVD (one of my favourite behind the scenes making of documentaries btw) and seeing how excited Jake was when he got the part and they showed him signing the contract surrounded by his family and his acting coach. I believe his sisters were cast in the movie in the Naboo celebration scene at the end of the movie.

^ Yeah, that was a good doc.

I heard about it here right when it happened. I was never a huge fan of Seaquest, so I didn't really know of him, however.

Last night my neighbor was watching the IT miniseries (I have no clue why) and I mentioned his death to her when he showed up on screen and she had not heard he died either.
