STAR WARS: Could Jake Lloyd have played a better Anakin in ep2 + ep3?

Re: STAR WARS: Could Jake Lloyd have played a better Anakin in ep2 + e

Christensen was decent in Shattered Glass.

At this point Lloyd and Christensen don't make much of a difference to me. I'm not wild about either take on Anakin, although for different reasons - and as indicated, Lucas is as much to blame here as anything.
Lucas reportedly met with Leonardo Dicaprio and Ryan Phillipe for the older Anakin, but they turned it down after reading the script. Dicaprio said the script was "So bad".

Now there's an interesting possibility. DiCaprio plus (while we are daydreaming) some actually good writing for Anakin might have salvaged this thing.

It is the writing and way Lucas wanted Anakin portrayed that hurt the character. Hayden Christisan has played similar characters before. Lucas probably saw him as Scott in the Canadian drama series "Higher Ground". He basically played the same type of character that we saw in the prequel films. Hayden was fantastic in "Life as a House" playing Kevin Kline's EMO son. It's amazing what a good script will do for an actor.

There is of course the Clone Wars version of Anakin (voiced by Matt Lanter) who is far less whiny and more mature than the Christensen incarnation. We see more of the 'good friend' that was barely there in the films. Lanter kind of does his own thing, and doesn't try to really replicate Hayden's monotone (Which previous cartoons and video games had done with some other voice actor).

^ This would be my preferred version of the character and how I wished Lucas originally wrote him. Lanter does a fabulous job.

Re: STAR WARS: Could Jake Lloyd have played a better Anakin in ep2 + e

No. I found it rather creepy the way the young Anakin looked toward Padme. The age difference between the two actors is one of the major issues I had, and it wouldn't have been any different in the sequels if he had continued the role.

Re: STAR WARS: Could Jake Lloyd have played a better Anakin in ep2 + e

No one could have playeda good Anakin because the script sucked so bad.

You have high quality actors like Portman, McGregor, McDiarmid and others and they couldn't save the movie so a "nobody" like Lloyd is unlikely to pull off anything good.

I don't blame him for the lousy child Anakin we had in episode 1.. child actors are rarely good and it's like a lottery to find one (i can count them on one hand from the last 10 years or so) so it's not Lloyd's fault. Additionally he's not Hollywood material.. he's just not that good looking (even training and such wouldn't elevate him to the typical male lead in Hollywood) so it's a moot question.

Re: STAR WARS: Could Jake Lloyd have played a better Anakin in ep2 + e

Well, based on that video he's got the whininess down pat.

Re: STAR WARS: Could Jake Lloyd have played a better Anakin in ep2 + e

^ Really? He didn't seem whiny to me at all. He seemed rather frank and open about his experiences.

You're pulling a J Allen on us and going try-sexual, aren't you?

Just proving a point that not every image of HC is touched up modeling pic.

Those beach pics aren't hideous by any means, but he looks pretty average. I wonder how he managed to put on about 20lbs and not have it show in his face!

Re: STAR WARS: Could Jake Lloyd have played a better Anakin in ep2 + e

I remember that Vanity Fair magazine when RotS came out with the fold-out cover of all the major actors in the films. Jake Lloyd looked really solid (and, imo, bore a bit of a resemblance to Christensen) as a potential lead character in a big budget movie.

While that was 6 years ago, my point is Hollywood movie magic can fix anything.

Re: STAR WARS: Could Jake Lloyd have played a better Anakin in ep2 + e

Lloyd might be a good match for Shaw, but I think Hayden is a better match to Mark Hammil IMO.

I wonder, had George done the prequels in the 80s after wrapping up the OT who would have been Anakin & Obi-Wan?
