Star Wars comics

Anyone else enjoy the Infinities stories, even if they're not perfect? I consider the ESB one perhaps the best of the lot.

Well Joel_Kirk and JRoss liked them to a degree. Joel_Kirk may try to read the trilogy in its entirety since he's in a SW mood.

I really enjoyed the old Tales of the Jedi series. Tom Veitch/Kevin Anderson's take on Star Wars created a fun and rich "branch" of the franchise, with common elements (especially the interpretation of the force) running through TotJ, Dark Empire and into the Knights of the Old Republic video games.

I also liked Infinities, JoelKirk. Star Wars Tales was a fun diversion, with a few of their stories really rising above. The classics in that series include Vader vs. Maul and this one story where the Falcon jumps into an uncharted system.

Cool...

I really enjoyed the first chapter of Vader Down. Did I enjoy it enough to buy the rest of the floppies in the crossover, since I'm not reading the ongoing titles? No. I can trade wait on this. :)

My favorite Star Wars comic, by the way, is Dark Horse's Star Wars Droids #5. It's the issue that's an homage to Carl Barks, with three droids -- U-E, 2-E, and Q-E. It's a little dark, and then it turns heartwarming.

The Vader Down crossover ended today. I thought the ending was very middle of the road, everybody just kinda wandered away from it. Vaguely disappointing.

And I almost forgot... the Tag and Bink stuff was brilliant!

Kor

I picked up a very used copy from the library today. It's pretty hilarious.

I like the random pop-up of characters (e.g. Bob's Big Boy, Cylons, MST3K characters). And just the randomness of their 'adventures' overall.

I finished the second volume of Marvel's Darth Vader the other day. I thought it was okay. The artwork is good. But the story was so-so. The supporting characters were alright, but I liked them better in the first volume of the story. Don't know if I will stick with this series or just wait until they collect all of the Vader books in a larger volume or omnibus.

Of the new batch of comics, I have enjoyed the Darth Vader on the most, right up until "Vader Down." At that point, all the problems I have with comics came to a fore, especially how stupid characters can be and how overpowered.

I think Aphra Bem is the most interesting new character introduced, and the way Vader is playing multiple sides, both with the Emperor, Imperial Military and other threats. It's all very enjoyable. I just wish Vader Down hadn't happened.

Re: Infinities

I have a very vague memory of Yoda dropping the Death Star on the Emperor's head...?

Awesome! Poe was great. I kinda wish Marvel would come up with some more original titles for their series than just naming them after the characters, but that's no big deal.

The C-3PO one-shot will come out on February 24. Not sure why a TFA tie-in was scheduled so long after the movie release.

Really excited to hear about the Poe series, I liked him a lot in the movie.
The only Marvel comic I've read is the first Shattered Empire issue, and I enjoyed it.
Dark Horse did a lot of great stuff over the years. There's a ton I haven't read, but my favorites were the Clone Wars era Republic and Jedi issues, Legacy and Knights of the Old Republic.

If you liked the Clone Wars-era Republic and Legacy you should check out Dawn of the Jedi, John Ostrander and Jan Duursema's next collaboration after Legacy. The end of Dark Horse's license cut the series short (it ended after 15 issues), but they managed to tell a pretty satisfying story in that time. I really like the pre-Republic world they created.

I haven't read "Before the Awakening" yet but I thought it shows what Poe does immediately before the movie... which is also what this comic is purporting to do?

That's in Infinities: A New Hope. Luke's torpedoes failed to destroy the Death Star, allowing the Empire to destroy Yavin and capture Leia. Luke went to train with Yoda while Vader lured Leia to the dark side, and the Death Star was renamed the "Freedom Star" as a propaganda tool against Rebel holdouts. Yoda did eventually destroy it. ;)

I was a huge DHC fan, but I've been impressed with the calibre of creators Marvel have put on their books, often in very interesting collaborative combinations.

Short story is it wasn't. It was to be December, then got bumped to Feb, last I heard it's now due March!

Did you ever look at Legacy Volume II? It's a different creative team, but makes for an effective continuation despite the abbreviated conclusion it had to go for due to DHC having to wind up their run.

Rucka is always reliable and BfA is 3 good short stories of the main characters. Would expect it to be dovetail quite nicely with that story and perhaps link up to Shattered Empire too.

I read Star Wars: Lando graphic novel last week. A quick, mostly fun read. I think they nailed it regarding Lando's charm and suaveness though maybe overdid it on his penchant of getting in way over his head, but at least it kept the story moving along. Lobot also got some attention and I actually thought that provided the emotional weight of the story. The artwork was good for the most part, though the Imperial agent that played a big role in the story, I wish they had given them a more distinctive look.

A few weeks ago I finished the second volume of Marvel's ongoing Darth Vader series. I thought this arc was just okay. I think the antagonist or obstacle the story set up for Vader wasn't that threatening. The artwork was good and the supporting cast was alright, though I found Aphra and the murderous droids more refreshing in the first volume than this one.

To be fair, there really isn't all that much that can rival Vader at this point to seem threatening. He is the threatening one.

Fair point, however that's to the writers to conceive of problems or antagonists that can trip up Vader and make him look bad or expose him to Palpatine's wrath. I can see how the antagonist of the second volume could have done that-conceivably-but I don't think it really came off well. Vader could just strangle them easy or make the person have an accident. I wouldn't mind seeing someone like a Prince Xizor that could present a challenge to Vader, or people who could really be set up as a potential Sith apprentice replacement for Vader.
