News Star Wars Andor anticipation thread

Needs more Kyle Katarn

The last thing this needs are excessive cameos and appearances from random characters, like the Favreau/Filon series. Particularly characters from ancillary materials (games, animation), and ancillary materials that are no longer canon.

This looks absolutely spectacular. If the show is half as good as these trailers, it'll easily be the best SW content in the last five years.

Wow. Really, REALLY looking forward to this now.

Just wish it had a better title.

The Victory class would probably be an intermediate step.
The Victory was such a lazy design (literally an ISD model kit with some random stuff glued on), I'd rather they just stick with going from Venator to Imperial-I, then roll out the Imperial-II and Executor 20 years later.

It's worth remembering that the Empire isn't big on innovation. Most of their hardware being cheap, uniform assembly line slabs of brute force is kinda the point of a monolithic mechanised Empire. So I can't see there being much call for many new frontline designs when the existing ones are doing just fine. Especially when the fleet's main purpose isn't engaging peer level warships, but blockade, interdicting, bombarding, occupying and just generally looking intimidating.

Same with the TIE; it's a metal crate with engines and blasters. It flies and it shoots; that's all the Empire needs it to do. They probably hardly changed the specs on that thing for it's entire run.

A thing I think people often forget about Star Wars is that starship technology is ancient. It's perfectly normal for designs to be floating around, or even still in production for centuries, or millennia. After all a starship is to Star Wars what a horse and cart are to a medieval style fantasy. Sure, some are fancier than others, some are very crude, but that's not a lack of knowledge or technological sophistication so much as a question of; "how much money/effort is one willing to spend on this thing?"
With that in mind, it's kinda crazy how short lived the Venator was. I suspect the main reason Palpatine had them all scrapped is because they were not well suited for purpose once the Imperial military got done putting down the last Seperatist hold-outs and switched to occupation and enforcement, and he certainly didn't want anyone else getting their hands on that kind of hardware.
pretty lazy to use a fairly stock AK-47 for a star wars blaster.
I'd say that's not lazyness, but the filmmakers simply making a deliberate and fairly obvious aesthetic statement.
For those unaware of Andor's production, they didn't use any of the Volume(s), and most of the show was shot in the UK as well.
There is at least one volume up and running in the UK, and I'd be surprised if they didn't use it for some shots. The medium and close-up shots in the senate chamber for example seems like the perfect use for it. Also, literally any starship interior with a window.
But yeah, clearly most of it is set and location work and it makes a big difference to the aesthetic.

A big box of LCD screens hooked up to a real-time render engine, and a motion captured camera rig for correct FOV display parallax. ILM's proper brand name for the tech is "StageCraft" while "Volume" is just meant to be the physical rig, but the latter appears to have stuck more in general use.

Right, that thing. I never knew it was called Volume.

Needs more Kyle Katarn

He comes later, more in the Mando era.

Like many other elements of the EU, I would love to see Katarn reintroduced to the canon with a show which, more or less, tracks his life from Imperial Officer to Jedi Knight. Maybe not the exact same storyline of the game, which had a lot of fantasy elements, but something along those lines. We already have the Dark Troopers...

The guns used in the OT were more modified than the AK-47. Usually adding scopes and barrel modifications, but the key bit is they used obscure weapons, the most well know probably being the broom handle Mauser that became Han's blaster. The most egregious thing about the use of the AK-47 is that they didn't remove the magazine,as is nearly always done on Star Wars guns, because blasters don't use bullets.

Or it could also be that it's not a blaster at all. It might be a projectile weapon that uses bullets. I'll have to go back and look to see. Either way though, yeah.. Pretty bad decision to leave it looking like that.

Did I see the planet where Cal Kestis started out where they were taking apart all of the old Clone Wars era ships? It definitely looked like it to me.

Ok, but slug throwers are still a thing in Star Wars, which do use bullets. So, while I get that the AK-47 is an extremely iconic weapon, it still has the potential to work inside the SW universe.

I'll be curious to see how it plays out. Again, obscure weapons doesn't change much because once I study weapons, and many others do so even just by playing various games, those weapons pop out as just Earth weapons.

I don't know if that's Bracca seen in Andor, but we definitely saw the world in two Bad Batch episodes.
