An episode that focuses on Cody and a bunch of rookie clones.

I liked what it was trying to do - give development to the clones. However, it couldn't overshadow the Manevolence trilogy

I enjoyed it alot. I'm glad that Clone Troopers are actually allowed to buy the farm. I enjoyed some of the humor. Clone Trooper humor is much better than droid humor.

It was "alright". Not as good as I thought it'd be from the preview.

However, I did notice something. The series is much more mature in its themes than say what the movie apparently made the series out to be.

The fact that troopers can buy the farm in relatively brutal ways, ie. the space eel thing, and even via execution style laser shots by droids, makes this series much more realistic than one would been led to believe from the movie hype, etc.

Even Gen. Grievous is more brutal than I thought he'd be. And going by the contentious friendship he has with Dooku is even more gratifying.

However, those commando droids were pretty bad ass. Glad we're seeing a bigger variety of battle droids than the ones we know from the films.

I just hope that we see more Jedi action soon.

A bit OT, but once again I notice just how much this series is actually rendered in 2.35:1 rather than in 1.78:1. Why CN is airing it this way is beyond me, when they show their commercial break clips in the proper 2.35:1 ratio.

I liked it too. I even liked those commando droids, at least a little more than the previous goon-bots. They look like a nice cross between the two previously established (two legged) models. Of course since we never saw them in the movies they must not have been as successful as hoped. Maybe George will retcon them into the films someday. (That is both sarcasm and serious in case you're wondering.) I thought Rex and Cody would have realized what was up after the first "roger, roger" but I guess it took a little more for it to sink in.

I also like the more realistic portrayal of the clones and war in general, but they sure used the word "Hell" more than I thought a show aimed at "kiddies" might bother. I think I heard it at least twice last night. Now I am no big censure fanatic, I just noticed it and mention it out of curiosity. And what a bummer, escaping the droids only to be eaten by an giant eel with a face from "Predator."

Another little Luminara tease at the opening and even a bit of Kit Fisto and that cool Mon Calamari Jedi we saw in the promos.

This was a pretty badass episode. Seriously, they hold nothing back with clones biting it left and right. They even drop a few "H" bombs.

Great atmosphere and nice focus on the clones. The new droids were pretty cool. I'm just sorry we didn't see Kamino.

The only disappointment is we have to wait two week for the next episode. Bah!

At least it's the Artoo episode. That episode with Kit Fisto and the Mon Cal Jedi is called "The Lair of General Grievous." It should air later this year.

Clones die, but I've noticed all the enemies killed by the good guys are robots, which is the vast bulk of Seperatist forces, but still...

Clones did die in the Clone Wars movie, btw.

"Your captain is taking after you, Anakin"

No wonder Anakin hates Kenobi in Revenge of the Sith. A few more snide remarks like that I'd want to kill Obi-Wan, too.

Great episode! I think that is the first time I've ever heard someone in the Star Wars universe say the word HELL!

How about The Empire Strikes Back? "Then I'll see you in Hell!" -- Han, as he rides out on tauntaun to find Luke.

Something very interesting I noticed about this episode was near the beginning when the rookies' sergeant came on deck. The man was identical to the three of them, he didn't even have any apparent differences to his armor, yet the three of them knew who he was instantly.

That was perhaps unintentional, but to me it felt very real. The clones are essentially their own species, and if everyone in your species has the exact same genetic code, there must be something you notice about each other to set you apart from your brother. Some of the clones have developed very obvious individuality (such as Rex's shaved head), but in truth, every single one of them is unique, even if a non-clone can't see the difference between them.

This episode was okay probably the least strongest so far. It needed more Jedi swordplay, more Yoda and Grievous, and more wisecracks from Kenobi. I was disappointed to see Grievous back in command so soon seeing that the last time we saw him he allowed the Separatist flagship to be destroyed. Apparently a few months have passed since the last episode. I was expecting him to have suffered some ill effects from disappointing Count Dooku and the Emperor. He apparently got off scot free. However I was glad to see that the Separatist have some halfway competent battle droids in their inventory.

A few Questions, Comments, and Concerns:

It seemed like the Republic Strike force came to the rescue in less than a minute after the "all clear" signal went down. The planet Camino is in the same system which leads me to believe that it is relative close to the clone outpost. This leads me to believe that the Republic Strike force could have gotten to Camino extremely quickly as well. This leads me to question Grievous’ plan to take out the Camino clone factory. I am not sure if Grevious' plan was to take out the clone producing facility or the entire planet, but he probably needed a much larger fleet seeing the Republic was sure to respond quickly and forcefully. Maybe he was hoping for a quick hit and run because that was the only thing he had time for.

Why didn't the Separatist send a massive fleet to destroy Camino since it would easily cripple the Republic even if Grievous’ entire separatist strike force was lost? Wouldn't taking out the Republics sole source of clone troopers effectively end the war? This was a huge Achilles heel that the Republic had that the Separatists only gave half effort to exploit. Surely the Republic realized this as well so I can’t fathom why Camino wasn’t heavily defended at all times especially when the sole station that could give Camino advance warning of attack was being manned by a half dozen "shinnies" without a command officer present. Who is in charge of Republic security General Petraeus?

I'm enjoying this series a lot more than I thought I would given the prequel trilogy and the movie that set up this series. I walked out of the movie thinking it wasn't too bad for the story that it was summed up to be.

In the part where Anakin went to rescue the crews from those ships of the Malvelonce trilogy, I thought it was brutal when the droids cut open the escape pod and those clones were sucked out into space.

This episode was good in showing how the clones operate and their bond to each other. I look forward to seeing more of this series.

okay I've fallen into watching "Star Wars: Clone Wars" out of my sheer boredom at this season's scifi offerings. It is widely regarded as a slow year.

anyway, the "destroy Malevolence" 3 parter was decent if formulaic, but this was easily the best episode they've made yet

why?

**This is not a great series. It's not as good as Tartakovsy's cartoon short series. It could...BECOME fairly good over time, but now its not.

The biggest problem, I feel, was in releasing the opening in theaters: this was at worst, another attempt purely to get money, or at best, an honest attempt at a publicity stunt that went awry. This was a miscalculation based on extreme hubris I think, and the simple rule I had with Episode I : "at some point did you bother to screen the finished product with a test audience"? at no point before this did people react and tell you it wasn't good enough to be in theaters?

The baby Hutt thing and others stuff from the movie aside.....and the fact that they're obviously not getting back the movie voices....the voice actors they hired for this, for the main cast, are just really untalented.......though again, maybe that is the script, so i'll focus on that:

the scripting of Anakin and his padawan girl is godawful and cringe-worthy.

Obi-wan is kind of an archetypal stalwart so he's not cringeworthy but he's wooden.

The animation isn't movie-quality. It *is* kind of TV quality...if you consider that lots of kids TV uses moderate-quality CGI like this nowadays.

**You guys don't like the droid humor? That's one of the reasons I tune in. It helps that droids in CGI don't have to look real and are SUPPOSED to be kind of one-dimensional characters.

Interesting that they were developing the Clone Trooper/Storm Troopers this time out.

weird, as it was in the entire prequel trilogy, that they're supposed to be "the good guys" now then turn around in episode III

but anyway, this episode was good because it didn't focus on the main characters, whom they've already kind of wrecked (compared even to the prequel trilogy itself) but on guest-characters who can give you more of a splice-of-life look at other characters and events in the storyverse

its good that for a children's show (which it obviously is) they do let them kill not just droids but clone troopers too (apparently because they wear mostly armor and even then, they just get shot with laser-lights basically)

and that line at the end by "Heavy" was pretty fun:

(Droid Commandos have Heavy wounded and pinned down, but pause to ask their squad leader) : "Wait, do we take prisoners?" (on this mission)
Heavy: "I don't" (Heavy lunges forward and hits the bases's self-destruct button, blowing them all to pieces)

Long story short: they should have been doing more stuff like this, than that stupid Ashoka stuff and Anakin stuff

....I'm willing to consider that maybe we got off on the wrong foot with this series

but still: episode 1x05 Rookies was enjoyable, but still a little clunky in places, but in a "yeah we know its cheesy just dive into it, it's not BSG and meant for kids" kind of way

and yes, there's the whole "well is Star Wars a kids movie?" thing

answer: no, it's meant for "kids of all ages" or rather; please don't write it just for 6 year olds that need a new action figure, write it for intelligent kids or adults who haven't lost their sense of whimsy.

So was it good? It was pretty good, enough that I was entertained and it held by interest, but there were a few rough patches; dialogue occassionally a little stilted or clunky

nonetheless, it was of the "wow, this is your first season and you still have bugs to work out, but you probably will eventually" kind of "mostly good with bad parts"

....NOT, and I repeat, NOT, the "bad" which was the summer movie and first episodes, which were "it was officially an embarrassment that this was ever released" kind of way

So "Clone Wars" if more episodes are like "Rookies" would be "not an embarrassment".....that's still a while away from being actually "good". It says something that when at the end of "the learnign curve"...you fought your way up to "lackluster"

still, a step in the right direction

Tartakovsy's cartoon short series was 90% action scenes. Well done ones, but you can't do a 20 minute show every week with just 4 spoken lines.

I think several of the CW voice actors are better than the live-action actors... Anakin and Padme in particular. Others, like Yoda, Mace Windo and Count Dooku, are close enough to the originals to be a non-issue.

That is a strange complaint.

Yep make us like and care for the Clones it just make their turn against the Jedi's more heart wrenching.:techman:

I really prefer this Anakin over the Anakin from Episode II and Episode III. This is close to what used to come to mind when I thought about Obi-Wan's description in ESB.

Great episode! I think that is the first time I've ever heard someone in the Star Wars universe say the word HELL!

If I can be a nerd here, Owen tells Beru in ANH that Luke better get those droids ready or they'll be hell to pay and Han yells at Leia "What the hell are you doing?!" when she shoots open the garbage shoot. We get the word "damn" twice in ANH and once in AOTC.

OK! OK! I'm VERY wrong! I'm an unworthy nerd! I'll turn in my card!;):lol:

It's a standard breaking in the newbies war story episode, but made much friendlier for kids. Although, I was surprised by the suicide/sacrifice ending, which is fairly dark for a cartoon.

But like I said last week, going into the show with low expectations is the only way to enjoy the show. As long as you're okay with very little plot and lots of things going boom, it's not that bad.
