There are things that can be stated quite definitively. Catholic protesters marched to gain parity in Northern Ireland public life, a move that partially signaled the will to move away from republicanism and accept life in the kingdom. The actions of the RUC, radicalized by the like of Ian Paisley, exacerbated a situation that needed not be violent. The escalation caused by the RUC gave the IRA a new entrypoint into Northern Ireland politics.

Both sides behaved as much like crime gangs as everything else. Most ‘British’ people would t mind if the whole island of Ireland was unified as Eire, but we know that for varieties of reasons, the people in NI are not comfortable with that. Most ‘British’ people also disagree strongly with things like the stance on abortion in Ireland.

What happened was people realising the tit for tat wasn’t working, and the way forward was to just stop pretty much. Everyone was sick of it. It wasn’t important who did what so much, so long as no one did it again. And that’s what we were moving towards. Till muppetry got in vogue again. Now I worry we are going to step backwards.

Out of interest about the part of Irish Americanism, I remember a month or two ago going out for a walk and tuning into the radio where I picked up RTE and there was an interview about with an American lass doing the Irish dancing who was causing controversy because she was black. I can't mind her name but I noticed this link appearing a few times in the BBC news recently and I was wondering if it was the same person?

From what I know, NI and Ireland are co-operating with the pandemic and my understanding is that there is a sizeable proportion in the NI Protestant who while may not think themselves politically as Irish, don't mind the economic benefits of Ireland and being part of the EU.

I wonder if NI and Ireland becomes more closer both economically and politically in the near future if the Loyalist nutters will get the boat over here to my neck of woods?

I have never met a loyalist. And I live in London. I can honestly say I have never met anyone particularly anti-catholic, and I was raised in the Church of England. Like heavily, as in I have slept in a church multiple times. The Protestant/catholic divide is something that exists greatly in locations where it seems to really matter, largely because of history.

I mean I am heavily considering converting to Catholicism, for personal reasons, but I do have certain conflicts with aspects of the faith. Part of which comes from my c of e approach, part of which from other modern angles. So I am very aware of the differences between the groups from a theological perspective. I think some of those are the stumbling block...I sometimes think of NI as being a bit like Israel in the eighties from certain perspective. For some people in NI they are probably worried about eventually losing what they see as their cultural and religious identity by force of sheer numbers, should they truly embrace parity.

By the time you throw in the political aspects and bloodshed that goes back to the sodding Vikings and Romans, it is a very tangled web. Strong will to embrace full peace was needed, and newer generations not to make he mistakes of the old.

I live in a part of Scotland where the Orange Order has their marches. I don't mind the actual marches when they play their music, well as long as they keep in tune LOL. It is afterwards that is the problem. With their proto-military uniforms, the sullen looks, the drinking and pissing in the streets and the other anti-social behaviour that wouldn't be tolerated at any other times, of course the Polis isn't anywhere to be seen around these times. It feels like a town under occupation like you see in these old war movies for an afternoon. There is also the Rangers/Celtic games where there is the necessity to wear football tops for weeks on end. I wonder if they have dozens of tops which they wear each day.

All in all, a rather depressing time. The only good thing about the current pandemic is that it keeps these cultural phenomenons off the street.

Also the Loyalists were kicking off a few ago because the BLM were going to tear down statues in George Square, Glasgow. There was no BLM and no one tearing down any statues, there was only a march protesting about the treatment of asylum seekers who were dumped in Glasgow by the UK Home office's private contractor.

As much as all parties needed to look to the future, bothsidesism is both disingenuous and not helpful, especially since the experiences of Catholics in Northern Ireland are not reducible to the IRA.

Just a friendly remark. This could be interpreted as Whataboutism. The problems in Ireland is old but that doesn't mean that modern interference by the UK should be ignored.

Just noticed in an earlier post that you said most people in the UK disagree with position in NI against abortion. A thought, I wonder how the UK's angels of liberalism, the BBC and the Guardian aren't constantly banging their drums against it like they do with similar themes in other countries?

The guardian is *always* banging its drum. The BBC less so. But the only reason I know anything at all about it is because of the drum banging, so there’s that I suppose.

There's no controversy here over it. It's just a couple of #alllivesmatter fools trying to stir this up. Same as the Irish American ejits who go on about Irish slavery
