There are things that can be stated quite definitively. Catholic protesters marched to gain parity in Northern Ireland public life, a move that partially signaled the will to move away from republicanism and accept life in the kingdom. The actions of the RUC, radicalized by the like of Ian Paisley, exacerbated a situation that needed not be violent. The escalation caused by the RUC gave the IRA a new entrypoint into Northern Ireland politics.
Both sides behaved as much like crime gangs as everything else. Most ‘British’ people would t mind if the whole island of Ireland was unified as Eire, but we know that for varieties of reasons, the people in NI are not comfortable with that. Most ‘British’ people also disagree strongly with things like the stance on abortion in Ireland.
What happened was people realising the tit for tat wasn’t working, and the way forward was to just stop pretty much. Everyone was sick of it. It wasn’t important who did what so much, so long as no one did it again. And that’s what we were moving towards. Till muppetry got in vogue again. Now I worry we are going to step backwards.
