Uhura played by Zoe Saldana
She told MTV that Star Trek is set to go before the cameras first, and that "I do think we are going into pre-production this fall, to start shooting early next year.

Keep in mind though it's only an actor talking and not above the line producer/business types.

Sweet! :)

I figured principal photography would start sometime in 2011 because the crew and studio will need a good long while to create and add the visual and sound f/x and perform the final editing.

Since Batman 3 has a release date, I figured I'd update the 2012 Summer schedule:

May
• The Avengers - 5/4
• Madagascar 3 - 5/18
• Battleship - 5/25

June
• Brave (PIXAR) - 6/15
• Star Trek 2 - 6/29

July
• Spider-Man (in 3D) - 7/3
• Batman 3 - 7/20

I have a bad feeling about XII releasing so close to Batman and Spiderman. Won't those films take a lot of the focus off Trek, and possibly damage its box office?

It is prime box office Summer season.
Batman 3= Warner Bros
Spider-man 4= Sony Pictures Entertainment/Columbia

Star Trek XII= Paramount Pictures

All are major competitors. If Star Trek XII starts shooting late in Q2 or Q3 of 2011 Paramount could move its release date later in 2012 but that would make it more than 38 months since Star Trek XI (2009) was released and messing up the prime DVD/Blu-ray release before Christmas retail season of that year. Since now the home video sales do better than the cinema ticket sales that is a major consideration.
That is a long period of time between a sequel for a major franchise that made a lot of profit in 2009. I'm sure that window in Q3 of 2012 will be a target that Paramount Executives will not want to miss.

Well, the same thing was said back in the day about Star Trek facing Wolverine or Terminator. And look how that went.

There will be tough competition, it can't be helped.
But if the movie is good, has good reviews, word of mouth and with the boost of success from the first movie, anything is possible.

I get your point, but I don't think the new Spider-man and Batman 3 are comparable to Wolverine and Terminator. Batman is the biggest franchise right now. Spider-man also posted its highest worldwide gross with its last picture (even with its lackluster story). Terminator was/is a stagnating franchise that is getting progressively worse. Wolverine was dumb, but still successful.

The thing with Trek XII is that's its second weekend could have a much bigger drop when it's against Spider-man than what it was against Angels & Demons. Add in the fact that Spider-man is confirmed to be in 3-D and will eat up as many IMAX and digital screens as possible.

I just hope Paramount was smart and locked in contracts for IMAX and digital screens (especially if the go the 3-D route). Considering Spider-man plopped themselves a week after (knowing they were doing 3-D) leads me to believe Paramount did not.

Look to Iron Man 2 this weekend for a good indication of how Trek XII will perform.

All indications point to an opening of 160 million. The same increase applied to Trek results in $122 Million. (3-Day opening weekend) and if its 3D (eww no thx) it will be even higher, perhaps $140 Million due to higher ticket price.

Men In Black THREE?? yeesh, wait long enough for a sequal--not that i was even EXPECTING one.

I'm just mega-excited XII is coming out on my b-day! :D I'm definetely going to THAT midnight screening!

Wait, doesn't Pirates of C 4 come out in 2012?

I guess they needed all the schedules to line up. Hope it's better than MIB II. Will Smith said he wanted to do a third one to apologize for that one.

They really dont another Ice Age, OR Madagascar. i guess they just want to bleed those movies dry?

I would tend to agree, but Ice Age 3 made close almost $900 million worldwide (on a $90 million budget) and Madagascar 2 made $600 million, so it's an inspired business decision to make another.

In any case, there's probably more people in the world who would say the same about making a twelfth Trek movie.

Maybe, but Trek was a reboot, not really a sequel. it took a franchise with a huge and loyal following, but was so tightly restricted by itself, not much more could be done with it, and opened it back up. I don't see Ice Age and Madagascar having the same following and fan quality as Star Trek.
