Star Trek XII New Information Thread

Can we please keep this thread about Trek XII news only, please? I don't want to get a mod in here and clean up the mess that is being made with all this Trek XI talk, but I can if I have to.

From the article, I really liked these questions...

  • Who will direct (if Abrams decides not to do it, then who?)
  • What will it be called (and will it have "Star Trek" in the title)?
  • Budget (bigger than 2009 film, smaller? the same?)
  • 3-D or not 3-D
  • Who/what is the villain (Khan, Klingons, both, others?)
  • Will we see new familiar Trek characters (Nurse Chapel, Harry Mudd, others?)
  • Will William Shatner be in it?
  • Who else will be returning from 2009 movie (Greenwood, Ben Cross, others?)
  • Who will be cast for key new roles (possibly big name star to boost int’l box office?)
  • Will there be any changes to the look (ship, sets, uniforms, props)
  • Will/how much will sequel carry on storylines from first film (Spock/Uhura, destruction of Vulcan, Spock Prime’s knowledge, etc.)

possible spoiler of character

Star Trek rumor burning up interwebs

Did a New York Times article just give away a massive character spoiler for the Star Trek sequel? Judge for yourself. The article talks about how Roberto Orci brought his iPad to a meeting where the creators were planning the next film:
Kurtzman, jump-started the discussion with an iPad slide show, showing stills from the first film, snapshots of potential locations and a photo of a suggested actress for one of the roles. On the woman's photo, he had used his iPad to paint on a Vulcan ear."
Stop the presses: there might be a Vulcan in the next Star Trek movie. Bah. If it’s T’Pring, that means they’re doing “Amok Time,” also known as the “Spock has to get his jiggy on, or he dies” episode.

Doesn't Spock have Uhura for that? Seems to me that if TPring is in this as an adversary, it'll likely be as a jilted lover or political/cultural opponent.

Ugh, that just sounds like a bad, horrible idea for a movie in general let alone Star Trek. The next movie just has to be about exploring something new civilization that may or may not be interpretted as a threat. Not some soapy junk.

I love Amok Time so much. It's one of my top three favorite TOS episodes. Part of me wants to fangirl flail over possible T'Pring in the next movie, but then again, with Spock/Uhura already established, I can see her presence being used for cheap, easy tension.

Way to jump to conclusions... maybe it was T'Pau or T'Pol... maybe it was the Romulan Commander... and even if the picture was of Nu!T'Pring, she was a great character with her own agenda. . .we don't know if she and Spock were bonded in the new universe, and she never WANTED Spock for himself in the old one, so why would that change?

First Star Trek 2 Promo Image

Collider recently posted a pretty cool promo image from "Star Trek 2"
http://www.reelempire.com/news/68-movies/2841-first-star-trek-2-promo-image

also:
Badass Digest reports that the genetically engineered superhuman won't be revived for the sequel:
It’s definitely a character that will make fans of TOS excited. Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta. Actually it’s one of those that I named.
-an informant placed close to the production of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek 2
my rundown of those characters, in order from least likely to most likely:
these are selected excepts from the article:
The Horta: A silicone based life form that is killing miners on the planet Janus IV.
Odds: 100:1

Harry Mudd: A space charlatan who first comes into contact with the Enterprise when they find him smuggling a ship full of beautiful women.
Odds: 50:1.

The Talosians: In the original pilot for Star Trek, when Captain Pike was still in charge, the Enterprise visited Talos IV and discovered the local inhabitants to be a big-headed race who wanted to keep humans in a zoo and who could beam any image into their brains.
Odds: 10:1

Trelane: A godlike creature who ensnares the Enterprise and toys with the crew.
Odds: 5:1.

Gary Mitchell: In the second pilot for Star Trek, Gary Mitchell is Kirk’s best friend and the Enterprise’s helmsman. When the ship attempts to go outside the galaxy, farther than any spacecraft has ever traveled, they hit a weird energy field.
Odds: 2:1. This is the character I would most like to see pop up in the movies.

T'Pau as the leader of the Vulcan people would be interesting. If its T'Pring, though. Her presence would mean what was suggested by cast and crew during the promotional interviews, that Spock and Uhura's relationship take on a larger role in the sequel, is being acted on. T'Pring could be a challenger to Spock's.. uhm, throne.

Cross-posting from the scripting thread - just spotted TrekMovie mentioning this on Twitter:

@TrekMovie J.J. Abrams talks about the upcoming Star Trek Sequel at the #MorningGlory premiere http://epx.ms/cnwcOi
Not much, I know, but there it is - it's a very short clip and the audio level is low, so you'll probably have to turn up your speaker volume.

So, since Quinto tweeted a few days ago that he is ready to shave his eyebrows again, & STXII is likely to start production sometimes the next 3 or 4 months, I guess news will be coming fast..

From what I have heard is that filming starts in January.
