Star Trek WINS Oscar!

They absolutely deserve this for the incredibly detailed and diverse collection of aliens they created for this film. The familiar Trek aliens looked better than they ever had before and the universe of original background aliens was phenomenal (check out this thread for pics)

I hope this is the first in a long line of Trek Oscar wins.

The aliens were pretty cool in this, yep. But to me that was no guarantee of an Oscar. If I recall correctly, Planet of the Apes (Burton's) wasn't even nominated for best makeup.

Isn't this THE first Oscar ever won by any of the TREK movies dating all the way back to TMP? I know TMP got a visual effects nod but ALIEN ran away with the statue that year. And to my recollection none of the next nine films in the franchise got a single Oscar nomination in any category.

Yes, this is the first Oscar any incarnation of Star Trek has ever won. :D

Yes.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (3 nominations)
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (4 nominations)
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (2 nominations)
Star Trek First Contact (1 nomination)
Star Trek (4 nominations, 1 win)

Hey thanks for listing those other nominations...I had utterly and completely forgotten the ones for TVH, TUC and FC! Given their competition those years(ALIENS, T2 and ID4) it's no surprise they didn't win...but at least they got deserved nods.

Because I'm bored:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Art Direction - lost to All That Jazz
Music (Original Score) - lost to A Little Romance
Visual Effects - lost to Alien

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Cinematography - lost to The Mission
Music (Original Score) - lost to Round Midnight
Sound - lost to Platoon
Sound Effects Editing - lost to Aliens

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Sound Effects Editing - lost to Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Makeup - lost to Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Star Trek First Contact
Makeup - lost to The Nutty Professor

Star Trek
Makeup - WON
Sound Editing lost to The Hurt Locker
Sound Mixing lost to The Hurt Locker
Visual Effects lost to Avatar

So...
James Cameron's films have won over Trek four times.

As a Star Trek fan, I'm happy that the movie won an Oscar as I just think it's cool for a Star Trek movie to win an Oscar. Of all the movies in the franchise, however, this is one of the least worthy of that distinction. I think it won mostly because it was such a box office success and because it didn't have a lot of competition (the make-up on Scotty's little friend was cool, though). When I found out "Star Trek: First Contact" was nominated (years after the fact) and looked up who it lost to, I was really disappointed. There was a Star Trek movie that really deserved an Oscar, even if it was just for make-up.

And to the person suggesting that Montalban should have won 'best supporting actor' back in 1983, that's pretty funny. I love his performance, but come on, it's like a dictionary definition of over-the-top and hammy. Yes, Ledger won for playing a villain, but that was a much deeper and more subtle performance that very powerfully conveyed some captivating psychological dysfunction and pathos. Montalban's was just a scenery-chewing spectacle...a performance that could not possibly be taken seriously as a contender for the most prestigious acting award in Hollywood.

Star Trek beat out Il Divo and The Young Victoria for the Academy Award for Best Makeup.

The franchise's losing streak is over!
Whoopdeedo.

I agree. It doesn't compare to all the Oscars won by the previous ten movies.
I'll take the Hugo TOS won for something of memorable substance. These days with the money and resources available to feature films I expect nothing less than decent makeup, costume and f/x. It's no longer a big deal.

Really, what was the point of the sarcastic snipe? The film won an Oscar, and the people who supported it are glad it did. Them them have their fun. I don't know why you felt the need to put your sarcastic two cents in, when you know it won't do anything but rile others up. IIRC you are the ones who say that we can't have mature discussions on here pertaining to this film. So why do this then?

Good for Trek. They deserved it.

^^ Because I don't think the film deserved a damned thing.
Dude, that's news to no one. It hardly required making a special trip over here to take what amounts to nothing more than a drive-by potshot.
