Star Trek vs Batman

But, which was the more successful television show? Hm? Hm? Hm?

again, "Batman," especially if we're talking early on. It's first season was ridiculously popular and helped launch the '66 movie.

"Star Trek" never did very well, ratings-wise. Now if the question is which one is more highly regarded, different story.

Umm... TNG was a force to be reckoned with in its day for ratings.

I still say Batman overall though.

I...was...trying to...impersonate that guy...you know....*sigh*...Nevermind....

Yes, you're right...

Twilight for the win!

this is a debate? if it's just popularity, it's pretty clearly "Batman"

the lowest grossing "Batman" movie made $107 million, while only two of eleven Trek films cleared one hundred million.

I think you are mistaken

Worldwide takings

ST:G ~US$118
ST:FC ~US$146m
ST:I ~US$113
ST(2009) ~US$386m

And of course TVH took over US$100m alone in the USA.

So thats five ST films that have grossed more than US$100m

I'm not mistaken, merely American-centric in my numbers. I'm sorry, I should have specified "domestic box office"

In that case, we have to define what it means to be a fan. Is being a fan just someone who likes Batman or someone who seriously follows Batman and knows all of the details and intricacies?

I agree that Batman has more casual fans, but Star Trek has more diehard fans.

In fairness, we shouldn't rely on someone who has a Super Saiyan as their avatar to define anything for anyone.

We could be here all week awaiting their reply.

If we use one sample in terms of box office split (US vs International) US percentage first.

Batman (61/39)
Batman Returns (61/39)
Batman & Robin (45/55)
Batman Forever (55/45)
Batman Begins (55/45)
Dark Knight (53/47)

And for ST

TUC (77/23)
GEN (64/36)
FC (63/37)
INS (62/38)
NEM (64/36)
ST2009 (66/33)

So just under a 50-50 split for Batman whilst ST shows a slant towards the US market. Of course ST is Sci-Fi and has a certain stigma attached to it whilst the Batman flicks are action flims which don't have as much of a stigma attached to it. Plus Batman films were reimangined for both the 90's and the Nolan trilogy. Rather than being continuations of a 60's/80's TV show.

Note the most succesful of all the Trek films was a reimanging of the source material and designed for todays market.

As for which has more fans remember that whilst things like comic books might be more readibly available in the US the same is not true in other countries. Which could diminish the potential fanbase.

I'm a lifelong fan of both franchises, but, Star Trek is my most favorite "universe" in fiction.
