Star Trek vs Batman

GemHaters

Captain
I swear this isn't spam!

Me and my boyfriend are having an argument right now as to who has more fans...Trekkies or Batfans. I happen to be both, but am a die-hard Trekkie for life. So what do you all think? Who has the bigger fan base?

Batman. At least, at the moment. Batman has a truckload of comic book fans, campy TV show fans, campy movie fans, and now (most damning) fans of the new-- extremely popular movie trilogy.

I think trek fans are far more dedicated, but there's no question we're fewer in number.

However, depends on how you define "fan."

Now if we define "fan" as someone who intimately understands the Batman or Star Trek mythology respectively... now THAT is a question. I have a friend who knows nothing about Star Trek, but has read every batman comic and seen every batman movie and TV show that ever existed. I am very similar w/ trek, down to the apocrypha and novels... not sure how numbers would add up among the more hardcore fans.

I don't think its possible to compare how wide the fan base is. The box office numbers of all Star Trek movies vs all Batman movies are similar, I think.

I agree that we should compare who's fans are more dedicated. In that category, Star Trek wins hands down. Batman still doesn't have his own convention.

Batman is a cultural icon known to every single person in the country even if they have never picked up a comic book, seen any of the movies, or tv shows. How many little kids dress up as Batman for Halloween? How many dress up as Captain Kirk? There's absolutely no question that Batman far exceeds Star Trek in number of fans.

Hey, I hear you. I'm a HUGE Batman fan, I have been all my life...I was just wondering what y'all thought...

You went from lonely to boyfriend 6.2 seconds! Or maybe once all the creepers started PMing you, you reasoned...

NEVERMIND! Figured it out. Say no more. Mums the word :D

Batman and Star Trek? Two odd things to compare. I don't know enough about Batman. I liked the '89 movie and the Adam West TV show. That's about all I can say.

And thus enters the all knowing and powerful Dr. Q :D

Yes dearest, I was lonely, but not single...lol.

And thank you for your vague insight...;)

Oh, and by the way, no one pm'd me....

In that case, we have to define what it means to be a fan. Is being a fan just someone who likes Batman or someone who seriously follows Batman and knows all of the details and intricacies?

I agree that Batman has more casual fans, but Star Trek has more diehard fans.

If 1,000 people spend $10 or 100 people spend $100....

Does it really matter?

Given that Batman first appeared in 1939, and Star Trek first emerged in the 1960s, it's clear that Batman had more time to prepare.

I'd go with Star Trek, Batman might be more popular in certain countries but that doesn't mean more fans. I think Star Trek might have more fans than Batman in most countries.

I think Bruce Wayne is a Trekkie, and Captain Kirk reads Batman comic books.

Star Trek vs Batman? Sure! Here's part one!

It pains me that I know many of the dweebs responsible for this travesty.
(As well as the guys who now make those '66 batmobile replicas under license.)

this is a debate? if it's just popularity, it's pretty clearly "Batman"

the lowest grossing "Batman" movie made $107 million, while only two of eleven Trek films cleared one hundred million.
