Star Trek: Voyager - Restart

JJohnson

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
There was a 'Reimagining Voyager' thread in the Voyager forum, so I felt like putting together a complete 7-year run of a new Voyager with that basis. I'm going to tweak a few things and make a few changes, and hopefully come up with a more interesting, consistent (technologically and resource-wise), and engaging form of Voyager. If you want to help write episodes for the New Voyager, please let me know. I'll start a website or something to bring it together.

A Few ideas to base this New Voyager:

Ship:
*the ship has 20 decks, crew of 192. there are 2 shuttlebays, one aft upper engineering hull, one aft saucer. Both are larger and accommodate more shuttles.
*shuttlebay 2 (engineering hull) houses the Delta Flyer, since it's the bigger of the 2; shuttlebay 1 houses Neelix's small ship and 2 type 9 shuttles.
*engines slightly bigger, ramscoops not so covered up.

Crew:
*Voyager encounters a Cardassian vessel stranded, and a few other Alpha races who struggle to survive. Perhaps 1-3 other Federation vessels (A Norway, Sabre, perhaps a Steamrunner guest on the show for four to six episodes), which form a ragtag fleet until the Borg appear, and the other ships are destroyed, but some crew are transferred over to Voyager before the ships are destroyed. This will give Voyager a little sense of not being so alone, and make a Borg battle a bit more believable than one little Intrepid class vessel.
*Crew is the mostly the same, but Harry gets promoted to Lt. JG at the end of 2nd season, then full Lieutenant at the end of Season 6
*Chakotay is played by a real Native American.
*Janeway forcibly calls Seven Annika Hansen, and the crew take that instead of 'Seven' as her name. She also wears a real uniform after a short while.
*Seven does not go out with Chakotay. She goes with Harry (who finds out he likes the Delaney girl better), then Tom, until Torres takes a liking to him even more, then she finally gets with a science officer, Mark Reiter, who can be introduced in season 6 for her. He is every bit her match, and balances out the male/female ratio of the crew.
*bridge has 2 front stations, Stadi (a blonde Betazoid, unique) and Paris are in charge of piloting the ship, and have on-and-off banter. Stadi is a star pilot, and resents Tom being at 'her' station. They eventually come to a mutual respect by the end of Season 1.
*I would introduce a character that looks like Trance Gemini - a purple, pointed eared alien with a tail from the Delta Quadrant a few episodes into the show to help Voyager through Kazon space, who decides to join the ship as a trader, botanist, science officer, and 'thief' if Voyager can't get the supplies it needs. I like Trance, just not her being some omni-powerful sun avatar.
*more emphasis on the conflict between the Maquis and Federation crew, and this doesn't get resolved until Season 3. It will lessen over time, but it will still be there over seasons 1 and 2.
*The Delaney Sisters appear several times a season, and Harry actually gets with the Delaney sister that likes him, and they get married eventually.
*Seven wears her hair in a ponytail during the 5th season, and is taught the concept of 'asking' and 'manners' soon after leaving the Collective so she doesn't always rub everyone the wrong way.
*The Equinox crew show up throughout season 6 and 7, and have several cameos, showing their diminished ranks and status, and how they suffered the consequences of their actions.
*Torres is not half-Klingon, but half-Orion. She has no über-pheremones, but she's attractive and very passionate, and struggles to fit in on a crew when her own race is seen as it is. She is an accomplished engineer from Starfleet, but left and joined the Maquis, using her looks to get what she wants. This Torres competes in a way with the new Stadi for Tom's affections, though Stadi won't admit it.

Situation:
*we see more of the crew rationing their supplies, and bartering for food and other things, even going on missions and doing trade deals for supplies from local governments.
*Kazon are phased out by 2/3 of the way through season 1. Their space cannot be that vast, but they go out with a bang.
*The EMH isn't considered sentient, and midway through the second season is recompiled with a new hologram (new actor) due to battle damage making the older image corrupted. It is later recompiled again when in season 5 the Think Tank steals the EMH backup and begins deleting portions of the holo-matrix, forcing Voyager to go without until a race of biotechnical being, similar to Bynars, agree to recompile the Doctor for them. Not knowing, the EMH is recompiled female, in honor of Janeway, as this race assumes humans are female-ruled, having a female captain (kind of like Kirk and his interesting computer problem in Tomorrow is Yesterday); they recompile the EMH into something resembling Sophie Howard, and upgrade the EMH program, giving it the ability to react more than its original gruff manner allowed.
*over the first season the ship is struggling with the loss of its crew and the integration of the Maquis into the crew. Here and there, we see moments of Janeway and even Chakotay enjoying exploring a new Quadrant that no one has seen before. These glimpses are rare, but build the respect between the two, and by the end of the second season, Chakotay, if not half his Maquis have a grudging respect of the Feds; by mid-season-3, they are almost cordial.
*The Equinox Incident still occurs, and shakes the Maquis even harder, as Ransom and his crew actually turn a few Maquis who initially jump at the chance to get home faster and help him. Chakotay gets to make a good speech about fighting for your beliefs and ideals with honor, like the Maquis, or taking the quick fix and the shortcut, throwing your morals out the windows for a quick advantage, like Ransom. This would be Chakotay's moment to shine here, showing his growth as a character, and that of several of his chief Maquis officers who have come to realize the importance of ideals.

I'll recompile this into a series outline. Comments, questions, concerns?

Series Premise:

The USS Voyager, an Intrepid class vessel, 20-decks, 467m long, is sent to find a Maquis ship by Admiral Paris. Captain Janeway is put in command of the vessel, and picks up several crew from the station DS9. Entering the Badlands, the 203-man ship is suddenly sent into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker. The Voyager Crew finds the Maquis on the Caretaker array, and they all depart, destroying the Caretaker's Array, revitalizing the Ocampan homeworld in the process.

Cast:
Janeway - Jenna Fischer (good choice?)
Chakotay - Robert Beltran
Milaana Torres - Crystal Allen, Adel Sheridan (any others?) (Orion/Human)
Tuvok - Tim Russ
Neelix - Ethan Phillips
Paris - Robert McNeill
Doctor - Robert Picardo
Kim - Garret Wang
Kes - Jennifer Lien (race looks like Trance Gemini in season 1 of Andromeda) (others?)
Staadi - Brandy Ledford

I would like to recast Kes, and possibly Torres. Kes had a sensual voice, but I'd like someone who has a 'cute' voice.

Love Jenna Fischer but think she's a little young to play Janeway, and what about Tom Jackson as the recast Chakotay? I think he even guest starred on TNG but I'm not sure. He's a Canadian Native American actor. Most famous for playing in Northern Exposure.

I like Tom Jackson...looks like he can do the job! Thanks :)
As for Janeway, I'd like someone born in the 60's, early 70's, and who still has her feminine figure. Yasmine Bleeth? Debra Messing? Diane Lane? Katarina Witt? Sarah Brightman? Other actresses considered were Chelsea Field and Erin Gray...Chelsea looks good and can likely act well. What do you think?

Cast:
Janeway - Jenna Fischer (tentative)
Chakotay - Tom Jackson
Milaana Torres - Crystal Allen, Adel Sheridan (any others?) (Orion/Human)
Tuvok - Tim Russ
Neelix - Ethan Phillips
Paris - Robert McNeill
Doctor - Robert Picardo
Kim - Garret Wang
Kes - uncast

Star Trek Voyager: Caretaker

Note:
Chakotay: Tom Jackson
Milaana: Michelle Ryan
Tuvok: Tim Russ

Some consider Maquis heroes; the Federation and the Cardassion governments consider them outlaws.

On the tiny Maquis ship, damage spewed forth from the consoles as the Cardassian Galor-class vessel followed the caravan of Maquis vessels, attempting to fire on the small, nimble craft.

On the bridge, a Native American with a small tattoo on his face called out over the hiss of leaking pipes and sparks.

"Damage report!"

"Shields at 60%," came the voice of the black Vulcan, Tuvok, reporting to Chakotay, his voice raised over the alarms.

A green-skinned woman reported "A fuel line has ruptured. I'm attempting to compensate." She tapped a few controls on the ship, but cursed in frustration, "Damn it! We're barely maintaining impulse. I can't get any more out of it." She was a green-skinned Orion, but also one of the smartest engineers Chakotay had ever known.

"Be creative!" Chakotay called back as he tried to fly the ship, weaving out of the phaser strikes of the Galor-class vessel.

"How am I supposed to be creative with a 39-year-old rebuilt engine?"

Before he could reply, the monitor on the cramped forward cockpit displayed the image of their predator, Gul Evek.

"Maquis ship, this is Gul Evek of the Cardassian Fourth Order. Cut your engines and prepare to surrender or we will--"

"Initiating evasive pattern Omega," Chakotay said as he entered his commands. "Mark."

The ship weaved around in a corkscrew fashion around where the Cardassian vessel was firing, allowing the ship to evade a heavy blow, but the Cardassians managed a glancing blow to the vessel.

"Shields at 50%" Tuvok reported, his voice still calm and composed.

"I'm going to need more power if we're gonna make it into the Badlands," Chakotay replied. "Throw the last photons at them and then give me the power from the torpedo system."

"Acknowledged. Firing photons," Tuvok replied as he fired the final three torpedoes at Gul Evek, with two hitting their mark, and one striking close enough to count as a hit.

Focusing on one goal at a time, Chakotay then focused on slowing down their pursuers. "Are you reading any plasma storms ahead?"

"One. Coordinates 171, mark 43," Tuvok reported, reading from his sensors, which were growing a little distorted as they entered the Badlands. The tiny ship seemed to fly more by will of the crew in here than by the instrumentation's ability to guide them.

"Then that's where we're going," Chakotay replied. "Hold on!" The ship banked port as it began its approach towards the plasma storm, a long filament of plasma that marked this region of space.

"The Cardassian ship is not reducing power," Tuvok reported. "They're following us in."

"Gul Evek must be feeling daring today," Milaana smirked as she attempted to squeeze a little more power into the impulse engines.

Reading his sensors, Tuvok reported, "They've taken a hit on their port blade. They're sending out a distress signal on all Cardassian frequencies."

"Can you plot a course through these plasma fields, Mr. Tuvok?" Chakotay asked, so as to avoid the same fate from the random plasma filaments that formed and dissipated nearly at random in this area.

"The storm's activity is typically widespread in this vicinity," Tuvok reported. "I cannot plot a course, so I will require an indirect route."

"We can use that time to make some repairs," Chakotay responded, hoping for a respite. As he began looking over the systems needing repairs and prioritizing them, a wave of energy passed through the ship, disorienting the crew.

"What was that?" Milaana asked to no one in particular.

"Curious," Tuvok replied, as he tried to ascertain what had happened. "We've just passed through some kind of coherent tetryon beam."

"Source?" Chakotay asked, not completely understanding what had happened.

"Unknown," Tuvok responded, his sensors unable to determine the source of the beam. His sensors set off again, as he reported, "Now, there appears to be a massive displacement wave moving toward us."

"Another storm?" Chakotay asked.

"It's not a plasma phenomenon," he replied as he scanned it with the limited equipment on the Maquis vessel. "At current speeds, it will intercept us in less than 30 seconds."

Taking stock of the situation, Chakotay turned to his Orion engineer, "Anything left in those impulse generators Milaana?"

"We'll find out," she replied, a devious grin on her face as she tried scraping as much power as possible from everything else, including life support to try to outrun the wavefront.

The ship was making a getaway, but even with the small increase from Milaana's deft rerouting, it was still gaining on them.

"Still exceeding our speed," Tuvok reported as his sensors reported they were not going to escape.

"Maximum power!" Chakotay ordered.

"Wave is continuing to accelerate," Tuvok reported, as he noted the life support has now shut off to provide power to the engines. "It will intercept us in...eight seconds....five...."

Before he could finish the countdown, a flash of light, and the ship was gone.

Earth, Federation Penal Colony, New Zealand

Captain Janeway strode into the prison determined. She was going to get whom she sought and get on to her mission as soon as possible. Her chestnut brown hair was done up in a bun, something she did when she was in a hurry. Her uniform stood out amongst the prison gray of the colony as she located the person she was looking for.

"Tom Paris?" she asked the worker who was repairing some device as she stood over him on a slightly higher railing. When he failed to respond, she continued. "Catherine Janeway. I served with your father on the Al-Batani. I wonder if we could go somewhere to talk."

Paris finally acknowledged her when he shut off the tool and got up, leaning on the tan/maroon box he was working on, "About what?"

"About a job we'd like you to do for us," Janeway replied.

"I'm already doing a job..." Paris gestured to the machine, then the colony, "...for the Federation."

"I've been told the Rehab Commission is very pleased with your work," Janeway continued as she walked with Paris away from the machine. "They've given me their approval to discuss the matter with you."

"Well, then, 'Captain',..." Paris began with a slight sarcasm that grated on the female captain, "I guess I'm all yours."

The two walked away from the dirt pit to what amounted to a garden in the penal colony, with trees and grass. Janeway continued their conversation, "Your father taught me a great deal. I was his best science officer during the Orias expedition."

"You must be good," Paris responded. "My father only accepts the best and the brightest."

"I'm leaving on a mission to find a Maquis ship that disappeared in the Badlands a week ago," Janeway said, jumping to the heart of the matter.

"I wouldn't if I were you," Paris cautioned, speaking from experience.

"Really?"

"I've never seen a Federation Starship that could maneuver through the plasma storms," Paris explained.

"You've never seen Voyager," Janeway smiled as Paris had stopped looking a little incredulous. "We'd like you to come along."

"You'd like me to lead you to my former colleagues," Paris restated, getting to what he thought Janeway was really after. "I was only with the Maquis a few weeks before I was captured, Captain. I don't know where most of their hiding places are.""

"But you know the territory better than anyone we've got," Janeway countered.

"What's so important about this particular Maquis ship?" Paris asked, curious as to why one lone rebel ship would trouble the Federation, and this captain in particular, so much.

"My chief of security was on board, undercover," Janeway explained. "He was supposed to report in twice during the last six days. He didn't."

"Maybe it's just your chief of security who's disappeared," Paris posited.

"Maybe," Janeway repeated, though not believing Tuvok would've disappeared. "That ship was under the command of another former Starfleet officer named Chakotay. I understand you knew him."

"That's right," he replied, noting a bit of anger in the voice.

"The two of you didn't get along too well, I'm told," Janeway continued, recalling Paris' profile she read on the way to the colony.

"Chakotay will tell you he left Starfleet on principle to defend his home colony from the Cardassians," Paris replied, explaining his situation. "I, on the other hand, was forced to resign. He considered me a mercenary, willing to fight for anyone who'd pay my bar bills. Trouble is, he was right. I have no problem helping you track down my 'friends' in the Maquis, Captain. All I need to know from you is what's in it for me."

Janeway liked cutting to the chase, but her attempt to get to know Paris was coming up short, so she cut to the chase, "You help us find that ship, we help you at your next out-meet review."

"Uh huh," Paris replied, crossing his arms.

"Officially, you'd be a Starfleet observer during the mission," Janeway explained.

"Observer?" Paris scoffed. "Oh, hell, I'm the best pilot you could have."

"You'll be an observer," Janeway emphasized. "When it's over, you're cut loose. We shove off in 30 minutes."

"The story of my life," Paris sighed as he watched the captain walk off towards her shuttle, docked at the landing pad 300 meters away.

Hi!

Hi Joel,

Sure! I'm bringing the pilot out now, so we can trade PMs or something back and forth on that, and how to plot out season 1. As a generality, I'd like to either avoid the Kazons or minimize them once Voyager travels out a few systems.

Let's compare some notes....

James

Hi!

Okay, no problem. I can't seem to PM or contact you though - how does that work?

Here are a few ideas building on what you said above:

* I think it would be really interesting to develop that idea of Voyager coming together with a group of other ships from various Alpha races and being forced to work together. It could create more of a Battlestar Galactica dynamic, with some kind of a council that meets on Voyager to discuss what is happening and to make decisions.
* Definitely create more friction between Starfleet and the Maquis, and even between Janeway and Chakotay. I am sure it is possible to keep Chakotay as an honorable leader without turning him into the Janeway lapdog he could be sometimes in the series.
* Also definitely agree that it is important to move beyond the Kazon rapidly.

I have some more developed notes on some of this, which I'll PM you as soon as I work it out. Beyond that, good job on the first part of the pilot, I especially like Milaana.
Speak soon,
Joel

janeway --- diane lane
chakotay -- wes studi (last of the mohicans)
torres ----- veronica veroza (czech actress)
tuvok ------ tim russ
kes -------- dakota fanning (young like the charactor)
neelix ----- verne troyer (austin powers)
Wes Studi is a native american actor, extremely intense, can do any thing from high drama, to low comedy. Think the doctor should be played by a different actor every week, activate the EMH and you never know what you'll get! Dakota Fanning, young actress to play a young charactor. Veroza is czech performer, again very intense, dark eyes, plays hot brooding twenty-somethings. And yes she did porn. Troyer as the small person who played "mini-me", or maybe another three foot actor, just see Neelix doing word play with the tallish Tuvok with the height difference.

I've not seen Veronica - perhaps Zuzana Drabinova?

Seven does not go out with Chakotay. She goes with Harry (who finds out he likes the Delaney girl better), then Tom, until Torres takes a liking to him even more, then she finally gets with a science officer, Mark Reiter, who can be introduced in season 6 for her
LOL

Here's what I considered a rough timeline:

Season 1:
*stranded in Delta Quadrant; crew picks up a few ships (5-9 ships, all Alpha/Beta Quadrant ships), and destroys the Caretaker array to prevent the Kazon-Org (not just freaky-haired gangs....something more menacing...kinda Jem'Hadar-like and a bit like the ancient warring Japanese clans or Middle Eastern tribes...)
*Chakotay is mildly defiant of Janeway, but in private, and when in the field. Over season 1, the two grow to respect each other, and he gradually begins supporting her to the maquis who come to him in private.
*Janeway plays diplomat and trader in this season, securing supplies and keeping the ships together. Some Maquis cause a diplomatic incident to which Janeway has Chakotay deal with them.
*Paris ruffles feathers with Staadi and Torres; he saves Staadi's life in the Caretaker fight, and then offers to take her out once they get to sickbay. She says she'll think about it. Paris in season 1 actually does get into fights and in bars - his arch is a gradual realization that the Delta Quadrant is a chance to make a new life for himself, and he gradually accepts responsibility.
*Torres begins to see she is valuable for more than her Orion looks, and uses her skill to keep the ship together.
*Tuvok is Tuvok. :)
*Staadi is a bit of a stuck-up know-it-all who thinks she's the best pilot there is. She will grow to respect Paris by the end of Season 1, though it's rough in getting there.
*Kim is still the wide-eyed cadet; however, he gets a promotion to Lt. JG by 2nd season's end. (Finally!)

Just a few rough archs I'd like to include in the 13 stories throughout season 1.

A promotion for Kim within a year of graduating the Academy? Not something I'd have expected - maybe have him graduate as a Lieutenant Jg (if he's top of his class, thus justifying the senior position on Voyager - unless, in your reboot, he's an Assistant Ops Manager and only becomes Head Ops Manager when the Ops Manager is killed) and then promote him at the end of S2 or S3, or do the same with him being promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant Jg.

If you're willing to change up stuff - why not go to the original concept behind Tom Paris and use the character of Nick Locarno? According to various rumours, they didn't use him either because they'd have had to pay the person whose script he first appeared in for every Voyager episode he was in or they felt Locarno was unredeemable.

And in the same way that O'Brien came over from TNG to DS9, is there room to get a character moved over from DS9 to VOY? Or from TNG to VOY, if you don't go with using Locarno instead of Paris? Maybe one of the lower decks characters turns up on Voyager - perhaps we have Taurik as the Acting Chief Engineer (instead of Carey) or Sam Lavelle turns up in some capacity.

Maybe make the Seska Arc (and use Sito Jaxa as her cover identity, perhaps, instead of using the Seska cover identity) the overall arc of the first season as it's tied so closely to the Kazon?

Ooh....have Seska masquerade as Sito,....then have the real Sito Jaxa show up in a Cardassian vessel they encounter in the Delta Quadrant...I don't know if I can bring Sam into this situation, if only because he'd be the first to want to see Jaxa, and he'd know it's not her, unless Seska's surgery involved changing her entire face, not just her race.

I think we can have Kim as the Ass't Ops Manager to start with...good idea there too.

Zuzana is pretty, But I had in mind someone who naturally LOOKS dangerous, maybe having her keep a bit of that east european accent as a part of her charactor.
