Star Trek V expanded score 11/30!!

;)

^^^In 1989 when TFF came out there was only TNG, TOS and the TOS movies, no so many incarnations.

TOS, TAS, TMP, ST II/III, and ST IV all had very unique main themes. It was only TNG that borrowed TMP's, when the original theme by Dennis McCathy was rejected. Then Goldsmith decided he wanted to use it again for ST V.

And why not. Had Horner returned, he would have re-used his own themes from TWOK and TSFS, too.

I'm not sure that's a fair assumption given that TFF had a significantly different feel from the earlier films.

That said, I'm not ruling it out. Hard to imagine TFF with TWoK style music though. Such a mood difference...

Well, have you heard Horner's "Cocoon"? Totally different mood to ST II and III but very similar to their soundtracks.

I used to play that, and other Horner and Goldsmith soundtracks if/when I heard there was a new ST film coming, to get myself in the mood. And I dug out the soundtrack to "Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings" animated movie when I realised Leonard Rosenman was scoring ST IV.

^^^Re Cocoon: The first time I saw the movie in the theater I started to hum along with the chase music near the end. My friend looked at me, wondering how I was able to hum along to a film I'd not seen before, and I explained that the music there was so similar to part of the STII score I could actually hum along with it.

You mean the part that was originally composed by Benjamin Britten? ;)

I recall somebody posting that an expanded First Contact release was coming sometime back, but I haven't heard anything since.

So far we have more-or-less complete releases for four of the films...

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Star Trek (2009)

I'd definitely be interested in a CD of Star Trek: Generations that was mixed properly (McCarthy has mentioned that Berman flattened his music, or something along those lines) or a more complete release of Star Trek VI.

I'd definitely be interested in either of those.

...Y'know, honestly, the only Trek film score I don't care for is Leonard Rosenman's "The Voyage Home." I think the only part I really like is the finale scene when they approach the Enterprise and then the end credits.

I think most of Rosenman's score is already on the album, anyway, including that track (Home Again and End Credits) which is easily the highlight of that score (though I also enjoy the lighter chase cues from the movie).

It's not that I don't enjoy the score at all, I just think it works better in the context of watching the film than it does listening to it on its own.

You're forgetting TMP. That was the first one to get a full soundtrack release, for the 20th anniversary back in '99.

Except that the 20th Anniversary Edition doesn't come close to being a complete release. It's not even close to filling the 79 minutes that could fit on the CD. That's why I don't include it.

That was a nice release (TMP) from Crescendo. It sounded pretty good compared to their other releases.

I am hoping for a Star Trek VI release. It's the only Trek soundtrack I don't have on CD.

It comes a lot closer than the original soundtrack album did. Still, I'd forgotten how much it excluded until I checked the cue list in The Music of Star Trek. Most of it is brief bits under a minute, but there are a few more substantial omissions.

I love that score, but I've avoided purchasing it for a long time, mostly because I'm rather uninterested in the second disc full of interviews and I haven't quite managed to find a price point I really like for it... which is strange considering, again, I do love that score...

I really need to pick up that book sometime. I like the release, but I'm not sure it needed an expanded version of the Inside Star Trek album. I'd have preferred a second disc of Goldsmith's score (or, at least, a full first disc).

Still, it is definitely an improvement upon the original soundtrack album (that was never released on CD, though, correct?).

Interesting. I've never seen that CD for sale anywhere (used or otherwise), but then again, I'm not surprised. The re-issue is far superior, even if it isn't perfect.
