Star Trek: TOS Diamond select Phaser review

Klingon Empire

Captain
Captain
Welcome to the first of my reviews.

Presintation
What Did the box look like?

The box looks rather uninteresting. Compared to a Platmates box with all that colorful artwork on it, the window box packageing looks rather bland. Right above the Window is the words STAR TREK in the original TOS font.

Next to the STAR TREK is a picture of the Enterprise firing it's phasers. Directly below that is a picture of Kirk with a Blue Shirt on. Wait, what? A Blue Shirt?!? Is this just my imagination or does everyone have this?

Moveing on, below the Blue Shirted picture of Kirk's shoulders is the Words "CLASSIC PHASER" in big red lettering. Below the Lettering is "AUTHENTIC LIGHTS,SOUNDS AND MOTION! ADJUSTABLE POWER SETTINGS" In Slated white Text. You have the ordinary Choking warnings and such on this box too.

Right across from Kirk, to the right, is the TRY ME! and PRESS TRIGGER FOR FX! Texting. Their is also a Toys R us exclusive sticker on it, but that's not important.

Flipping the box to look at the side, you can see the 2 IN 1 DESIGN big red text. TYPE 1 MINI PHASER SEPERATES FROM TYPE 2 PHASER is also there, in white, slanted Texting.

Moving on to the back of the box, There is a picture of the Black Handle Phaser PROP. That's right, it's the PROP, not the DST toy. The handle is black instead of Grey. Which is odd seeing as I bought the Grey version. The back also has the STAR TREK tet from the front, except this Text is on the bottom of the box.

The back of the box also has a little story of how Gene R. took the story to NBC and what happened. On the right side of the box there is a list of differant products with little pictures of each. The words "AUTHENTIC CLASSIC PHASER ACTION REPLICA" Words are in the Red Text on top.

There is some more little stuff, but what good would I be if I gave away all the surprises here?

The Phaser itself
My review of this great Toy/Replica

The Phaser Itself is a nice display piece. It looks very screen acurate. The phaser comes loaded with season 1 sounds. Stun is a beam and the vaporize setting shoots in bolts. A good referance for the sounds would be The Man trap. They use at least 2 of the sounds included in this Phaser in that show.

The detachable type 1 is a nice feature as well. I can easily hold the Type 1 and type with one hand as I'm doing now.

The Phaser 2 (Or Type type 2, whatevva) is one of the most screen accurate Phasers I've seen. It just looks so real. The silver barrel retates to simulate the beam intensity adjustment on the show. The only really differant thing is that the dial that was used to adjust power settings (Stun to Kill) is used to set the Phaser to "Overload"

Overload, that is really cool. You can't get Overload with a Playmates Phaser. This setting is very unique to this Phaser as I have not seen it on any Playmates toy or Trek Roleplay in general. This setting, along with the other features of this toy make it well worth the $24.

Final Thoughts
Um yeah, what boldy said.

Well, I explained pretty much everything above. But, this Phaser is not completely screen accurate. The lines on the side are not straight, as they are on the show. That's it really. :\

All in all, get this one, but be sure to get it from Toys R Us for the Grey handle. Plus, the Grey handle/Toys R Us version is a few dollars cheaper.

I hope you don't mind if I add my own observations on the Art Asylum Phaser (black handle).

I bought mine from tfaw.com for $18. ToysRUs has them now on sale for $14.

For the price, it's an excellent purchase, especially for those of us who built the AMT "Exploration Set" back in our youth. I already have the Art Asylum communicator (great piece, except for the antenna grid which bends too easily when you flip it).

It looks more like a prop replica than a toy. The paint scheme is well done, as are the various controls. However, a close inspection does show some quality issues. One of the cooling fins on the back is badly bent; it probably was still hot when it was ejected from the mold. The Phaser 1 is not held securely enough, and pops out from time to time, especially if you try to set the phaser on overload.

What could be made better? The sound is a little weak, as is the type 2 phaser light. I wish the color of the phaser 2 light was blue. They could have beefed up the light and sound volume by putting some AAA batteries in the handle instead of using watch batteries.

Despite these few shortcomings, it is well worth the price.

Mine is the black handle Art Asylum version. I got it at Suncoast for $30 but now I'm thinking I got screwed. I'm pretty happy with mine and I love to shoot my cats with it. I've found that, for the black handled version at least, if you rotate the targeting scanner on phaser 1 to the up position, the sound effects are much louder. The speaker is right underneath the targeting scanner. :bolian:
