Star Trek-TMP Directors Edition NOT on Blu-Ray!!!

I'm glad the original version of TMP is being released on Blu-Ray because, for historical purposes, it should be an available option.

The best approach was taken with Blade Runner though. All five versions of the movie are available in one Blu-Ray set. Ridley Scott's "final" cut, a 1992 director's cut, the 1982 domestic and international versions, and a workprint that's different from any of the subsequent versions.

Since they billed the Director's Edition as the intended version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture if Trumbull and Apogee had sufficient time to complete the special effects, I am just shocked that the CGI effects footage is not good enough for release on Blu-Ray. Especially with digital television just around the corner. Didn't they also release the DE in theatres in a few cities before the release on DVD?

Well, they were thinking about it, but Paramount didn't want to pay the extra cost to have the effects rendered in film resolution, so the theatrical release fell through. However, all of the effects were produced with enough resolution for it to be possible to render them at such a size. If the assets all still exist, an HD or film resolution version the DE would only require loading up the files and rerendering them.

So... the studio didn't fork out the cash for extra rendering time? That seems hard to believe.

Not really, Paramount didn't see a need for it as they nixed the theratrical release, movie studios rarely fork out money for something that is years down the road, like Blu-Ray.

I read on The Digital Bits web site that Star Trek 1 to 6 WILL finally be available on Blu-Ray next year BUT only the Original Version of ST-TMP will be on Disc! This is not what Robert Wise would have wanted so I plead to everyone esp. the Producers of the Directors Edition to re-do the Visual Effects for 1080p HD specs. I think it would very ideal for William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Stephen Collins, Douglas Trumbull, and one of the Producers who worked on the new Special Effects to provide NEW Video Commentary that can be shown allowing them to comment as they watch the film. I think this feature would really complement what has already been done for the DVD release. It would
also be fitting to have NEW Tributes to Gene Roddenberry, Robert Wise, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, and Jerry Goldsmith included.

Finally, it would be GREAT if the ST-TMP Music Score was in DVD Audio format and re-released on 200 gram Vinyl too!

Please write to the Producers of the Directors Edition DVD about bringing it
to Blu-Ray!!!

I should write and thank them for restoring it to its original state. I never had a problem with it in the first place. Now, the score on high quality Vinyl, that's something I can get behind.
