Star Trek: TMP complete score coming June 5th!!

Dang. My CD set still hasn't shown up, and my e-mail from La-La Land says it shipped on the 5th. Mail already came today and nothing. Either we are really slow here in the south or I am getting officially worried. Already getting bummed. :(

My experience since moving to California from Virginia six years ago has been mostly the same when it comes to the post office.

Things get here on time, but sending anything out of state takes forever. :(

The standard shipping is slow. I only got mine on Tuesday, and I live in CA.

Well, I'll certainly give it a few more days. 30 plus years already... what the heck's a few more days? But I'll be as anxious as a 5 year old on Christmas Eve. :D

Which means that the Anniversary version of "Inner Workings" is the only one that doesn't have the piano glissando when Kirk wipes off the "VOYAGER 6" sign. I think that's a big enough difference that it should've been included here.

Disc 3's take should be the same as the Sony album, regardless of what the notes in the Sony album say.
Neil

Just to be clear on this, unless I'm mistaken, "Inner Workings" on the Sony 20th Anniversary CD is the exactly the same take as the one on Disc 3 of the La-La Land set, as Neil says. The difference is that the Sony CD ends the track prematurely at 3:01, cutting off the last 1:04 of the recorded take which is included in its entirety (4:05) on the La-La Land CD. I see no reason to reproduce the truncated version of the take from the Sony CD in place of or in addition to the entire take. In my opinion there is no question that the right decision was made on this. It's easy enough to hit the stop button at 3:01 if you don't want to listen to the last 1:04 of the take (which includes the piano glissando in question).

Okay, I wasn't aware of the difference in length. I had the impression that that moment was part of the track on the anniversary CD but was lacking the piano element there. Maybe that part of it is similar to an earlier part of the cue so I got them mixed up. Anyway, I understand now.

I think you're right about an earlier part of the cue sounding similar. I think it's interesting that of the additional music selected for the 20th Anniversary CD (supposedly by Goldsmith himself), none of it was from takes actually used in the movie, and that the only entire track on either previous release that was identical to that used in the movie was "The Enterprise".

Just arrived this very second!!! Straight to my music room to listen on my not inconsiderable Hi-Fi separates if you'll forgive the minor bout of boastfulness!

Mike Matessino just posted in another forum that the track on the Anniversary CD was shortened specifically at the request of Jerry Goldsmith. "Jerry wanted the ending of that cue dropped from the Sony Legacy release because he disliked the wind machine. Bruce mixed it in a way that Jerry would have liked but so it is still perfectly audible."

Which forum? Without a link, it didn't happen. ;)

I went back to compare the Sony album notes to the new liner notes and found they agree on the take numbers for almost all the additional music included on the Sony album. The exceptions are: The Sony album notes only take S123 for "Total Logic" (one of the two takes edited together for the film). "Floating Office" is noted as being from take S42 (the same as the film rather than the alternate). "Vejur Speaks" is shown as being from only S170, rather the combo of 3 takes.

The original album material included on the Sony album is where things get weird. It indicates the "Main Titles" as being take S177 (same as Disc 3 Track 2 which it clearly is not), the "Klingon Battle" as being S235 (not included anywhere else), "The Cloud" as being entirely S186, "Spock Walk" as being only S163/165, "The Meld" as S237 (same as the film) and the "End Titles" as S203 only.

(I'm using only the slate numbers here for clarity.)

...And on "V'Ger Speaks," where there were longish pauses between notes, even the background hiss dropped out and it felt like multiple discrete tracks rather than a continuous piece.
Yes, I found this fairly distracting. However, I've "fixed" it quite nicely via the application of a small touch of reverb approximately two seconds before the occurrence each "gap". While listening, it's not actually apparent on those final seconds, but does have the effect of filling those jarring gaps with a pleasing, professional sounding "echo" prior to the next passage.

I get that you prefer it presented a different way, but it's a bit tacky to be talking about how you "fixed it nicely" in the same thread where actual members of the label have been posting, offering additional information and answering questions. Just my two cents.

More importantly:

For those still waiting on their sets to be delivered: La-La Land sent out an email to its email list earlier this evening with an update:

La-La Land Records said:

STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE
SHIPPING NOTICE

Due to overwhelming demand, orders for STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE placed after 6/7 at 10pm (PST) (order #52600 and on) are being held until the title comes back in stock, which will be on July 2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience. These orders will ship as soon as the title arrives at La-La Land on July 2. Never in our label's history have we had so many orders for one title in such a short period of time. We blew through almost half the entire run in a few days.

Thanks for bearing with us as we get more of the run back in stock.

Umm, I think it's pretty ridiculous for you to call my comment "tacky". It's a tremendous release - I absolutely love it, and I mean no insult to the label at all. For my use alone, I've simply made some very minor alterations on one cue that makes it sound better to my ear! Jeez.
