Star Trek: TMP complete score coming June 5th!!

Got mine yesterday as well. I finished the first two discs. Great stuff. This was an amazing soundtrack for a Star Trek film. I would rank it #2 next to the first Star Wars soundtrack.

How's the sound quality? It sure would have been nice if it was an SACD instead of a CD.

How about "in addition to"? That way those of us without SACD players (lots) would still be able to play it. :-)

This release is beautiful! The sound is awesome and all the extras are great. While listening to "The Enterprise," it was just so beautiful I couldn't help but be overwhelmed in joy.

Highly recommended!

Mine has arrived. I was a bit worried since there was a gouge in the packaging, but the bubble wrap did its job. The second disc was loose inside the box, but undamaged.

I haven't had time to listen yet, but I read the booklet. Very good liner notes. It's particularly great to have it spelled out just how much Fred Steiner contributed. I think I knew most of it from years ago, but some things I'd read since then from Steiner gave the impression that he just contributed a few arrangements. But it seems he was being modest; I think he even did more cues than I'd thought, although a lot of the cues credited to him are ones I'd suspected of being his work.

Well, mine claimed it shipped the day I bought it, ordering it minutes after it was released. West and East coasts got theirs, so hopefully I'll get mine here in the South today. I'm jonesin' for this one bad. :D

STAR TREK TMP SHIPPING UPDATE

Glad you guys are enjoying this release. Things have been so busy between shipping out web orders and wholesale orders I didn't realize we blew through the first batch of cds (nearly half the run)! We have more on the way, but they are about 2 to 3 weeks out (a notice will be posted on our website shortly).

Any order for Star Trek placed after Thursday, June 7 at 10 pm pst (order #52600 and on, to be precise) is being put on hold until more cds come back in stock.

We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience but never in our 10 year history have we received so many orders for 1 title. It was our equivalent to the opening weekend of THE AVENGERS. lol

So, this might explain the delays some of you have been experiencing, but it's excellent news that the album is selling so well -- a sure sign that the label knows Star Trek fans will buy Star Trek products from them!

I think this particular score has a lot of admirers beyond the ST fanbase. Goldsmith fans and soundtrack fans in general probably agree it's one of his finest and most important scores.

It sounds like this is already close to selling out, so I'm glad I got my order in within the first few minutes.

Anyway some have shown up in the UK now, so mine shouldn't be that far off.

My point was more that in order for more Star Trek releases to be a viable option for La-La Land, it's a good thing that this one is selling out so quickly. I'm absolutely aware that there are other Goldsmith fans, soundtrack fans, and non-Star Trek fans who would enjoy this. My initial comment was more in line with the hope/expectation from the circle of Star Trek fans clamoring for more releases like last year's TNG set or perhaps even another (epic) item like the Ron Jones box set.

I hope you get to listen to it soon. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!

Indeed.

My dream release would be a TAS soundtrack; they could probably fit every cue used in the entire series on a single disc with room to spare. (Better yet, a comprehensive box set of all of Ellis & Prescott's adventure scores for Filmation -- I never much cared for their comedy scores.) But it's doubtful that any master tapes of that music still exist.

I agree - I've got a bootleg of some Argentinian release for background score cues from the old Filmation He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

According to IndySolo, there's at least 22 minutes of TAS music available on YouTube. Someone (I think it might even be the guy who started the project here on the BBS a few months ago) has been collecting and posting them there. It'd be a simple matter of converting those videos into mp3s and having that music, even if just for now.

I already have that compilation, but its quality is uneven and it's not comprehensive.

And really, TAS is just scratching the surface. Ellis & Prescott (or "Blais and Michael") did some really fantastic work in the later '70s and early '80s, particularly in Flash Gordon, Blackstar, The Lone Ranger, and Zorro. I'd love to have an album of those scores, and some of the intermediate stuff like Space Academy and Jason of Star Command. (Levy & Saban's He-Man work is kind of interesting in an '80s-synth-rock way, but it's just not in the same league as Ellis & Prescott's lush orchestral adventure scores.)

I just had a wistful thought -- it would've been so awesome if Filmation had gotten the rights to do a TMP-era Star Trek sequel series around 1980, with the more sophisticated and ambitious animation and richer music that their shows had by then. (They could've recycled music cues from Jason, Flash Gordon, and Blackstar as well as creating new music; by that point they didn't seem to reuse any of their early-70s music anymore.) If they'd gotten back D. C. Fontana as story editor, or maybe David Gerrold (who had Saturday morning experience with Land of the Lost), it could've been a nifty contribution to the canon. And some of the background aliens from TMP could've become speaking characters. (Considering Filmation naming conventions, it probably would've been called The New Adventures of Star Trek, though I'm not sure that makes sense. Star Trek: The New Adventures?)

I got mine yesterday. Wow! What a great score. I love the alternate versions on disk 2. I also love the rough first takes of the Main Theme on disk 3 track 17.

I am in nerdvana!
