Star Trek: The Motion Picture on DVD

The SLV is better than the DE???

Wow!! I guess it's good to have different opinions.

The SLV will never see anymore official releases, period.
It's totally flawed, has terrible pacing, has glaring continutiy errors.
It was an embarrassment when they showed it on TV, (with the scenes of the sound stage visible), let alone putting it on a home video release.

Says you... I still like it better, over the DE, for a few reasons. The DE is good, but it could have been better with just a few things.

Well yes, Says me:lol:

The DE is not perfect. I never heard anybody say it is.

There are a few bits in the SLV that they should have put in the DE IMO.

But in poll after poll here with the 3 choices for favorite version of TMP----the DE won by a huge number.

I predict they will never again release the SLV, but if they do they should show some dignity and at least remoce the two scenes with alternate spacesuit / sound stage visible.

I make up my own mind, I don't just run with the pack. ;)

Or finish it and the mem wall sequence and put it back in.

Well the SLV cam in a distant third, but I don't begrudge you your favorite version.

If they finish the Memory wall sequence-----I'll damn well buy it no mater what version they attach it to.

I always felt the excuse/reasons they gave for cutting it are lame.
Spock sittting in a chair and having pretty pictures go by is just lame, weak & stupid. The Memory walk was to re-cement the Kirk/Spock relationship!!

The SLV is the best version, except for the fact that it was not widescreen. The theatrical feels incomplete and the DE is a horribly camped up version.

Oh the 'campy' claim again. :rommie:

Keep saying it maybe one person will agree the DE is campy. Then youy can sell him the Brooklyn Bridge.

I wouldn't say campy, myself. The DE fixed some problems I have with TMP... But it fucked some other things up as well...

I want to see the Memory wall sequence restored into the film, even if it's an "option", I'd also like to see the security guard sequence on the bridge with the probe and the Ilia probe in Engineering scene restored...

Or finish it and the mem wall sequence and put it back in.
What a terrible idea. Make a slow film even slower.

I said optional. And I don't think the movie is slow, thank you very much.

When every single button has a cute chirp or beep to it and when the other sound effects sould like they came from the drawer marked "campy sci-fi parody sounds" that makes it campy.

I don't see how it is slow. When I watch it, it seems to go by too fast. I want more.

Probably the same huge number that trots out to see every blockbuster opening weekend because it is what they are 'supposed' to do. Or the same number that made TITANIC such a huge hit.

The DE is just SO flawed, and why do a quarter-assed job of fixing stuff?

By comparison, the probs with the SLE are tiny. So you can squint and see the roof of the studio? Almost nobody noticed that on their 19" set 20-odd years back. That's a very small problem compared to the little space guy escaping Epsilon 9 who is in EVERY version and moves so badly he looks like grade school stop motion, and is nearly FULL FRAME!

Improve TMP ... yeah, cut out the bad stuff. They eliminated the worst shots in the vger flyover, the out of focus looking down and backward stuff (before the line 'viewer ahead'), but there was a lot more bad stuff to cut. And the new sound mix is excruciating. Plus the new ship shots are just so prosaic and uninspired.

You added that in a later message than the one I replied to.
I'm just sparing friendly, no need to get your panties in a bunch.:p

I still think that the movie would be far better with the mem wall sequence as it was intended than with the last min replacement of the spock walk. And I think it could be done up to speck with the technology available today, where it couldn't have been then.

Just give me all three versions on a single disc. The DE doesn't look bad upscaled to 720p.

When I recently watched Jurassic Park I noticed that during the helicopter-flight to the island, you can see where the backdrop-screen ends in one shot with Hammond... ;)
