Star Trek: The Motion Picture on DVD

It seems it IS now available internationally. Downloaded my widescreen theatrical version from iTunes last night.

Raally? Can you tell us anything about file format, file size and quality?

I hate iTunes, and I would only install it if it was absolutely worth the trouble.

No idea on the specs. But it looks great on my widescreen MacBook Pro. To my eye the colours look as good as the Beta videocassette I originally owned, and the VHS widescreen video version I bought to replace it when switching formats.

What's so bad about iTunes?

One more reason to hang onto laserdisc, besides TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING then.

230 lines of rez still ain't 400 (which Super VHS and laserdisc WERE), and as far as I know, PAL wasn't significantly more impressive than NTSC domestic.

When I watch a movie, I find I'm very rarely counting lines of resolution. I'm usually involved in the storyline. ;)

I'm not saying that iTunes' resolution is 230 or 400, just that the theatrical edition of TMP looks good to me, whatever its tech stats are. I'm sure you wouldn't be satisfied.

Laserdisc was a huge jump from VHS.
My friends were impressed. More so than the jump from Lasredisc to DVD.

So for folks who never saw Laserdisc the jump from VHS to DVD must have been tremendous.

On the subject of versions, I love to see as much footage as possible, but inserting ALL OF IT into the movie as they did for the 'Special longer version' is nuts!
They simply put in that much to fill a 3 hour time-slot on TV. That version is just waaay too slow.
I like a couple of bits though,
"crew of a thousand ten miles tall' 'command fitness' etc.

according to the Digital Bits, only the theatrical version will be released on Blu-ray. So I guess that's good for fans of it...

Apparently they didn't bother to do the new special effects in HD.

My first reaction was, "I don't like it. I don't like it one bit." On the other hand, it would be nice to have the original theatrical version on HD for posterity and if Paramount wants to take their time to redo the new FX, then I'm all for that.

They probably didn't realize it would only take seven years for that to come 'round and kick them in the ass.
Or they did, but didn't care... Just saying. I always got the impression that that paramount corporate saw the DE as a gimmick which would spur off sales of the "next round of DVD's" They never intended it as a true "last version" edition...

I agree. Also, this lets them avoid spending any more on the new release, which will probably not get cleaned up to any degree. That way, folks, can clamor for a new version, a cleaned up version, another DE version, and you've already taken BLU RAY throught the next several years, until everybody is downloading movies direct into their noggins or whatever the next lucrative thing is.

Nah, this isn't Star Wars, the BluRay version will be it, Pramount never even put TMP the out on DVD before TDE unlike the rest of the Movies.

on laserdisc they had the p&s extended version, and only came out with the theatrical when they went to widescreen versions a couple years later. If ld had lasted, maybe they'd've even done the first movies over with chapter stops and a commentary, but Par always on trek just tacks the tinies bit on each time, so there is always more (or less, depending on what you think of embellishments) for the next price gouging.

I'm thrilled for the folks who prefer the Theatrical version because I thought it would never see Blu-ray.
So the 480p fx actually helped those people who wanted the original on Blu-ray.
I am of course diappointed for folks like me who prefer the D.E.
But since TMP isn't my favorite anyway I'll suffer with that version until they come out with the DE,if ever,on Blu-ray.
Now if they don't have the extended version of 2 & 6---NO SALE.

But since there shouldn't be any problem with 480p vs 1080p for those movies we should get those.

I'm not happy about the DE not being in the box set.

I wonder if they'll be available separately at the initial release?

Although, buying 5 or even 4 would likely cost MORE than the box set anyway.

Don't need TFF in Blu-ray without a FX upgrade anyway.

That horrible DE should better be burried and forgotten. I hope they are going to release the Theatrical Cut and the Special Longer Version on DVD or BluRay or whatever.
