Star Trek: The Academy Years/Star Trek: The First Adventure (Script?)

Re: Star Trek: The Academy Years/Star Trek: The First Adventure (Scrip

Probably because, like Kaufman's Star Trek—The Motion Picture (nee Planet of the Titans), only a handful of copies of the scripts or treatments were made because they were sent in for approval by the studio. If it gets rejected, that's that. Once a film goes into production there are literally hundreds of copies spread around, and thus much easier to find.

I'd love to see Maurice Hurley's nixed Generations script and whatever work was done for Star Trek: The Beginning.

Yeah. :(
Though it'd be a shame to let an old school Trek movie script like that disappear. Hope someone would scan it for prosperity. AICN got their hands on copy somehow.

Speaking of AICN, here's their review of the "Academy" script: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/22789

A major problem could be Paramount ownership; but a book publishing the lost screenplays would be very cool, or IDW adaptations using unused concept designs etc

Most of that synopsis reads like a less entertainig draft of the movie Abrams eventually made, but I guess that's a function of the subject matter and structure.

There's some good ideas there, such as the "green" and "red" blood bigotry, but I agree it doesn't seem as entertaining as the '09 movie.

I know i'm not the only one curious about this. It's definitely not going to be made into a film now so why hasn't it leaked out?
It's the one I'd really love to read. Surely someone out there has a copy.

More information about it here http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_First_Adventure

I would love to read all those scripts...
I do know that Berman found Hurley's nixed GEN script in 2014.

It's a real shame that so much material like this is out there and can't be read.
If people out there ever have the script they should preserve it. Scan it and keep it. If anyone ever has the Academy Script I'd be willing to do a trade with them.

Anyway, found another bit of info on the Academy movie here http://trekmovie.com/2010/08/25/harve-bennett-talks-academy-years-concept-jj-abrams-star-trek/

I think, had things been different, that Starfleet Academy would have worked much better as a pilot for a new Trek television series after TNG ended (instead of spinning off with DS9, and I'm a huge fan of DS9.)

Also, this statement screamed out at me:

Later, in the mid-90s, (then-Paramount head) Sherry Lansing called me and said, “Come on in and tell me about this script we didn’t do.” We had a meeting. She was enthused and so was I. Then a couple of weeks later she called to say they couldn’t go forward because the television department was going to do a pilot that was a prequel. That turned out to be Enterprise. That prequel had very little to do with The Academy Years, but it smashed the revival of the script.

Talk about Paramount making the wrong decision. IMHO, Starfleet Academy would have been superior to Enterprise in almost every way.

We really don't know. If an Academy series had been executed as tepidly as Enterprise was, it would've probably been laughed off the screen.

But here's the thing: I think a primarily Earth-bound show based in a college setting with a younger cast would have attracted more of the demographic that UPN was striving for, instead of a show that was really nothing more than a retread of ST: Voyager with a different cast and ship. I think by its very nature the show would have been quite different than ENT.

Brannan Braga mentioned trying to set 'Enterprise' on Earth for the first year but the studio were having none of it and wanted a ship based show.
A College setting Trek series sounds like the 90210 series we all dreaded which this script was not.
