I'm so envious of your freehand drawing skills. Self-taught? Or did you do some post-secondary work in an artistic field of some sort?

Like any hardcore geek, hours of trial and error, and investing decent digital gear. I dunno about others, but the "trick" has been to avoid becoming dependant on the tech and losing touch with basic skills so i keep practice up with a sketchbook and pencil as often as I can.

I very much appreciate the compliment.... makes all of it worth it when ppl enjoy my scrawling.

Give this person a job! I just stumbled across this thread and your work is wonderful. I love all the concepts and would love to see more prop designs in addition to the phaser you posted early on. Drawing anything in perspective is tricky. Drawing a Star Trek ship in perspective is really difficult but you make it look so effortless. Thank you for sharing your work!

Thats so pretty! reminds me of the USS Sentinel class

It is similar in overall shape!

Outstanding! I want to see a Vengeance type dreadnought...

I'll definitely do a mockup of that one soon!

I wish, I've taught myself so far. I haven't spend as much time developing my skills as I want to, I have too many passions to focus one one haha

Thanks! I would love a job lol, or even just getting a ship in STO would be awesome.

For the drawings I like to make up quick blocky models in Blender to help with the perspective. Either that, or I use pictures of the original ship as reference.

I've decided to put all Star Trek stuff, 2D and 3D, (besides my Connie reboot) into 1 thread. Here is a dump of images to start with:

2D:

Unknown small ship concept.

Another small ship, my favorite so far.

I will be modeling the 2D concepts that I like eventually.

Cheers!
These are #$%$## beautiful!!!

I wish I had the hang of this level of rendering...

I still need to find some of the new ships I've drawn to post them here. In the meantime, I do like sparking discussion.

What are some of the the things you love or hate about any ship design, official or non-cannon? Be as specific as you want, down to the most nit-picking detail!

I'll start, there's actually quite a bit I don't like about 24th century ships. I don't like the endless rows of windows look for one thing. Also I love the philosophy of using smoother hulls going further into the future. Really I just want to see the ships get more sleek at time goes on, but they seemed to keep adding more greeblies and bumps to the hulls for some reason.

I love the TMP era hull material. I don't know what it is but that nice white/grey color with subtle paneling is beautiful. Also the lack of large toy-like glowing parts is a plus for me.

Side note, I was watching DS9 the other day and I don't know if it's just me but the Excelsior class in the shows doesn't look very good. I don't remember if it's the same model used in the movies, but I think she looked her best in Undiscovered Country, You could feel the scale of the ship. It's probably just the dismal TV budget, but it did bug me. I would like to see a remaster.

My main irritation is about later era ships having their impulse engine exhaust pointed at nacelle pylons and/or the nacelles.. I HATE that.
I agree on some ships having been overgreebled and yeah all those windows make them look like space cruise liners in some cases.
That's my short list..
