Ah, the TOS episode.
I don't think the universe will implode if Kirk meets Pike.

Pike is getting his Fleet Captain promotion this season (we have seen his new badge in the accolades promo). So he and Kirk will meet in that episode.
As much as this production crew likes to fiddle with a few canon things here and there, I really can't see them going against the grain with that particular bit of TOS implied history.
Especially since, as @UssGlen indicated above, it would be quite an easy thing to depict.

True, but giving Pike the promotion this season won't break any continuity that we are aware of.
Interesting. Kills people's assumption that a promotion meant he was handing over command to Kirk.
Dead assumptions tell no tales.
If Commodore Decker can command a Starship, so can Fleet Captain Pike. I've long theorized it was so he could lead some kind of starship task force, but we will find out soon.
I hope it's a good episode. We haven't seen much of Uhura this season so I'm glad she will be featured this week.
So today is a Uhura focused episode, cool!
