Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

Issues 179 and 180 have arrived (end of an era...). I modded my Vidiian Savior-class ship by removing the support struts from the nacelles. Make it look a little 'cooler'.

I don't know if it's thematic that the numbered collection ends on a pair of Delta Quadrant ships. Either way, there's hundreds more Trek ships that need physical realization, my partner is resigned to it and I am HERE for it.

The series was always a bit too Voyager focused for me. I can't believe we never got the main Bajoran ship. It was even in the DS9 credits from season four onwards!

That’s because, due to the nature of what Voyager was fundamentally about, with literally a new alien species nearly every week, there necessarily needed to be a huge variety of alien starships.

Voyager was also one of the series that was around when they switched to CGI from physical models so in the later seasons it was a lot easier to just create ships for every week. Same with Enterprise.

Indeed, I remember reading somewhere that the Voyager mesh was digitally scanned from the original filming miniature and the only discernible difference was the lit windows in the rear fantail behind the shuttle bay doors (they were lit on the CG model, IIRC). Crude by today’s standards, but amazingly top of the line for 1996, give or take a year or so.

That was my favorite redress of the—what was it—Husnok ship?

That wasn't a redress. It was a uniquely designed ship only used for Bajoran vessels (and a Cardassian ship once).

The Husnock ship later became the Antares class used very often by the Bajorans throughout TNG and DS9.

Interesting! I always thought that Bajoran freighter was a redressed model as well. EAS theorizes here (far down on the page) that it was cast from the same mold as the Husnock ship, which would explain why it has a generally similar shape.

Coming back to the XL-version of the Discovery, I can now say that I agree with @Markonian's assessment that it's not really a huge improvement over the original model. Unfortunately it's only marginally larger and doesn't really feature a ton of additional detail. For me personally it's still cool to own, because the saucer of my regular Discovery is somewhat crooked, while this one is perfect. For anyone who hasn't got either of those models and is thinking about getting one, I would recommend getting the larger one, as it's just a better size for the ship.

Anyone order from the US shop recently? This is the first time I have since Covid. And none of my orders have tracking information. I understand that shipping is going to be slower, but I am a little bothered about having no tracking at all.

And with them using CGI almost exclusively from Alter Ego on, that means its easier for Eaglemoss to make a model as they already have a CGI reference point to start from. Of course this really applies to ENT, which had a huge number of original or modified CGI ships for its 4 season run.

Shipping is even a more painful process than it was before COVID. And that is saying something where Eaglemoss is concerned.
