Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

I was in one of the comic/collectible stores in town. I sometimes ask what models I can order in, just for the heck of it. I was surprised that a non-hero ship this old was available for order, but I managed to order issue #60: The SS Botany Bay. I had to wait until payday to go get it, but I was really excited to pick it up.

I'm used to the Micro Machine version so I was surprised to see the struts holding the solar panels angled back, rather than straight out. Other than that, it's a straightforward ship that I don't have much else to say about. I've started to gain a greater appreciation for TOS-era shp (both the ones from the original show and ones introduced in the remastered versions). I really hope to get the Romulan Bird-of-Prey soon, being the most prominent TOS-era ship I don't yet have.

and this... um... thing is showing up soon:

We saw Cylons used in a police role in the penultimate or ultimate episode, they came in on VTOLs and sniped a large amount of bombers at a stadium, IIRC.
Military, not police. They had US Army style digital camouflage.

They even popped out of a modified Blackhawk helicopter that has "Marines" written on the side.

That makes sense. I really should start tracking down the DVDs so I can watch the show. A pity it wasn't successful.

I never got into Caprica like I did BSG (only watched the first episode) , but I did pick up a BluRay set a while back, it's currently in my "hope to watch before I die of old age" pile.

As I'm still currently in a BSG craze, I am glad Eaglemoss went beyond the original 12 issues projection.
I keep checking everyday when the Valkyrie is coming.

Among canon ship,
Awesomeness! I always loved the Valk. Looks like they're doing the early Adama version, as opposed to the higher-detailed drydock version seen in "Razor". I'm also a big fan of the capital ships. Now they need to do a Berzerk (that name always made me chuckle).

Berzerk is defo on my wish list. Like the Defender and Celestra, it appears in both canon and Deadlock. (The Celestra even appears in both TOS and RDM).

Why does the name Berzerk make you chuckle? It's usually associated with big, buff, and bearded Vikings.

I'm a little late to this party, but I've been admiring these ships for a while now and just ordered the Eaglemoss Ambassador class. Hopefully its worth the cost (I'm kind of cheap).

Well... yes... that's why.

I'm of mixed feelings about the Celestra, however. While they made an admirable attempt to reproduce it in NuBSG, It fell vastly short of the detailing the original had, which looks like it was made from 1,000 model kit sprues.

Here's the original:

And here's the RDM version:

Granted, the new version is a lot "cleaner", but you can see they had a hard time accurately reproducing it from limited low-res source material. The basic shapes are there, definitely, and it is recognizable to most folks who would see it, but not 100% true to the original, unfortunately.

And yes, I 100% agree they should do a Defender as well. It would be a fitting tribute to the ship's late creator, Steve Wilson.

Beautiful.
In a pinch, I'd pick the NuBSG version. I prefer the bulked-out frame.

Wasn't the fan Todd Boyce the Defender's creator? The Slitherine team from BSG: Deadlock asked him for permission to use his design in-game.

Ah - My memory is hazy, but I think Todd did the original concept and Steve did the first model of it. I could be wrong, though. Steve died back in 2009, around the time it first appeared in the show, so it's possible they went to the only source who was still alive. Man, that was a long time ago now - 11 years!

If the pictures of the model we've seen are final, this really is deceptive advertising... And they're mentioning the larger bridge module in the description as well.

I thought the saucer did not have green/red running lights...and where are the black curved bands on the port and starboard locations?

This looks like it could be the second pilot design. We can't see it at that angle, but (I think, for the Cage version) the connecting dorsal between primary and secondary hulls should be painted a duck-egg blue. This is closer, though, and perhaps what we had been shown earlier were prototype paint jobs from a previous version of the model. Kind of wish they used this variant for the ISS Enterprise, but that ship has sailed.
