Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

Apart from the drab mono-gray color, standard Voyager is among my top favourite models. It is the same size as it’s Furuta counterpart, but much better in quality, and totally better than the Johnny Lightning version.

Really? I though the Johnny Lighting one was far better. I'm willing to overlook the non-moving nacelles on the Eaglemoss one (though it's interesting that cheaper one managed to pull that off), but the large seamlines along the sides and the fact that they got the font wrong for the name and registry are a big turnoff for me.

I imagine the cheaper one pulled it off using lesser quality materials. Johnny lighting stuff never wowed me.

Johnny Lighting made a nice Galileo.

It’s small and weirdly shaped. I wouldn’t notice anything off with the font.

Received issues #112 & #113 today. I have always loved the Nebula class design and the Phoenix is no different. Great looking model. However, it did take a little work on my part to get it to look right. The large round sensor module at the top was very crooked. I carefully "snapped" it off (holding my breath that it wouldn't break into pieces) and then super-glued it back on correctly. Looks perfect now and sits right next to the other Nebula, The Honshu issue #23. Also, received the email that my K-7 special will be sent at the end of the month. Wish I could speed up the specials as I did the subscription all those years ago as I'm looking forward to the ring ship.

Yeah, my Phoenix was a little wonky too. The primary hull came separated in the box too, which required additional repairs. I just wish they didn't re-use the Bonchune model using a slightly-modified Galaxy secondary hull. The original Phoenix/Nebula filming model's hull was much more stocky and stubby. I understand it was done to reduce cost, since the CG model was already available and easy to modify, but I really wished they'd done a more accurate Phoenix. Just my own little pet peeve.

Agreed. I would’ve been cool to repaint the Reliant for the Saratoga, but Phoenix would’ve benefitted from a new mold.

Probert-C arrived today. I see what people are saying about the lack of detail. It seems to apply to the neck on down to a seam where the neck ends on the strong back. Very odd. And no magazine. Is there supposed to be a mag? If so, I guess we'll have to wait for it to arrive again. Aside from that, it's a pretty nice model.

Update: I noticed that the Probert-C page on the Eaglemoss site does specifically say "Model may ship before magazine". So, yes, there is a magazine, and yes, it will be sent later on.

Also, haven't seen the Phase II Enterprise on the US site yet. Usually appears about a week after it shows up on the UK site, so nothing on that yet.

I get that, but at the same time, the difference between the miniature and the CGI is about the difference between the 1701-D 6-footer and the later 4-footer and those two models were meant to represent the same ship...often in the same episode.

Yeah, I know, you're right about that. At the end of the day, I agree that it's still a really nice model (damage notwithstanding) and Ben's team did a great job with it. I'm an OCD starship purist and sometimes my desire for accuracy can be overwhelming. :)

OTOH, I need a big solid Voyager model. :ouch:

Agreed. I like Voyager too much (both ship and series) not too grab a bigger version of her. Especially since I can’t find a decent Playmates Voyager on eBay that doesn’t require a house mortgage.

Battlestar Galactica News:
Viper Mk II (2004 BSG) is slated for March.

The Colonial Viper (BSG 1978) [issue #3?] can’t come soon enough for me. One of my all time favorite starfighters. TOS all the way!

The XL series is extremely disappointing. I have no idea why they thought simply upscaling the 5" models was a good idea. The XL 1701-E is the worst of the lot IMO. At least they added some (minor) details to Voyager.

i’m really on the fence about them myself. i have three (skipped TOS and the D because it’s the worst offender in simply upscaling a very flawed sculpt). but i will defend the enterprise-E as the most necessary XL. it’s so small as a standard sized model, i find it satisfying to have a larger, if imperfect model.

after the disappointing voyager XL, though, i’m not going to be buying any more jumbos unless something amazing crops up (kelvin enterprise, cough). it’s almost discovery time anyway.
