STAR TREK: Shuffle the Deck
FINAL ACTS
Act 4
The Borg fleet blasted the Vaadwaurian ship into smithereens. And then, as Captain Everett and the others stood in shock as the massive Borg fleet displayed on the screen, a figure shimmered into view. It was Laas, but with Borg implants.
“Founder,” Captain Everett asked, “or Borg?” He asked.
“Founder,” Laas replied to Everett. “I have absorbed the Queen into the Great-link. She is now apart of me, and I apart of her. Yet another solid had betrayed me, and died for it.”
“What now?” Everett asked. “Will you use the Borg to bring the structure you failed to bring us all during the Dominion War?”
“I do not control the entire Collective,” Laas said. “In fact, with the Queen gone, and her network of drones, I have lost control of nearly half of the drones that were assimilated after the Voyager’s failed attempt to destroy them. In fact, I am sorry to say, this new, leaderless faction of the Borg, have just jumped, via dimensional travel, into your Alpha-Quadrant.”
“Can you?” Everett asked. “Can you take us home?”
“I can,” Laas said.
At that moment, a strange energy flew threw the smashed opening in the bridge section.
“Isn’t that one of those Bajora orbs?” Science officer Kral asked as she and the bridge crew answered the summons, and came onto the bridge.
“It is indeed.” Everett said.
Suddenly there was a flash of light, and Odo appeared.
“Odo,” Laas said. “They told me you were dead.”
Odo nodded, “Just before the blast, I was rescued by the Emissary. Due to the limitations put on the Celestial Temple, he was unable, as was Q, to give me true form until now. Why did you change your mind?” Odo asked. “Why not use the Borg to bring the order that both the Collective, and you, desired.”
Laas thought for a moment. “I saw the error in that logic. Perhaps in my ridged view, I didn’t see that control, even total control, can be corrupted and then what do you have? I now see that having billions upon billions of beings, struggling to find their way, insures a check and balance to the powers of the universe. I still do not trust the solids,” Laas said, “But I do believe they have come to trust us, and mainly you, Odo. They have taken the first step, and now we must as well.”
“So, what will you do now?” Odo asked.
“I will be the King of the Borg,” Laas said. “I will use the power I have over them to hopefully bring in a new era where the Borg, these Borg, can be a force of good in the Galaxy.”
“Good Borg?” Thron’s deep voice asked. “Never.”
Laas looked to Thron, then back to Odo. “I see we have a long way to go to fight bigotry.”
“Can we stop the Borg that jumped to the Alpha-Quadrant?” Everett asked.
“Only one man can, Picard. Where is he? That is why I am here.” Odo said.
S’ovak looked up through the massive hole in the ceiling of the bridge, caused by the Sheppard as it left. In the far distance a planet could be seen.
“He has gone there,” S’ovak said as he held hands with Marcy Rose, “and with him, the last hope we have.”
“The second Wave?” Everett asked.
“Yes,” S’ovak said. “That must be Q/Obriath’s plan. That is where he has gone. Q/Obriath must be preparing to return as the second Wave.”
“How long until he canna sweep back this way as the Wave?” Scotty asked, from where he had entered the bridge just moments ago.
“Does it really matter?” Reg Barclay asked as he stood next to Scotty. “Unless we patch that whole, this ship isn’t going anywhere.”
With help from the Borg, and the Balboa Federation/Romulan engineering crew, the whole was patched with materials provided by Laas’s Borg collective. Nearly three hours passed, and the massive saucer section lifted off the ground, and joined the Borg fleet.
On the Balboa’s bridge, Captain Everett was heading for the command chair. Scotty sat in the XO’s chair, Shigeru giving him the courtesy to do so. S’ovak sat in the other chair.
“So,” Everett said to S’ovak, “how much of my Romulan friend remains inside of you.”
“All of me,” S’ovak said. “Whatever there was of Sheppard, I have taken him inside of my mind.”
“And where do I fit in?” Ensign Marks asked as she stood to his side.
“Well,” S’ovak said, “I always had a desire for women from Earth.”
Navigator Wy’clan turned to Everett. “What do we do now?” Wy’clan asked the Captain.
“Just wait, I guess.” Everett said. “The Founder said we needed to wait until Picard finished his task on the seventh planet. So, just keep us in orbit.”
“Don’t you think I should be giving orders?” A female voice said from near the turbolift.
They all looked over to the Turbo-lift and saw Captain Michelle Duell, Commander Bynak, Javah Halmes, Evan Cooper, and in Bynaks large arms, cuddled softly in a blanket was a little baby.
“Elaine?” Everett asked as he left the command seat and joined Captain Duell and the others near the Turbolift. “How can that be?” Everett asked. “We just watched her older self morph into the Sheppard.”
Captain Duell nodded, “I think there are some things we are just meant to accept, Mr. Everett.”
Bynak walked down to the lower level where a now very happy Marcy Rose stood. She accepted the Baby from Bynak.
Everett smiled, “I agree, Captain” He told Captain Duell. “The ship is yours Captain; I was only keeping the seat warm.”
“Quite right,” Captain Duell said with a smirk on her face, “But since you’ve wrecked by drive section, and my saucer too, you can have the Balboa. This ship is yours, Captain Everett West.”
“Captain, how is it you are here?” First officer Shigeru asked.
“Our task was competed,” Captain Duell said. “So we were returned to where we belong. What happens on that seventh planet is what really matters now.”
“Where is President Spock?” Scotty asked, realizing the entire time that the sixth member of the team was not present.
Captain Duell, knowing of Scotty’s relationship with Spock, walked over to him.
“Mr. Spock’s travels,” Duell said, “have him on a new path on the Crossing world. I am not sure the adventure will ever truly end for someone such as President Spock.”
“So, he won’t become back?” Scotty asked
“Only time will tell,” she said to him.
“And he better get back here soon,” Evan Cooper said, “I let him have my leather pouch, incase he needed it, for good luck. But I didn’t give it to him to keep forever.”
“Oh, shut up.” Javah said. “As soon as we get back to DS9, and some how defeat the Borg, you’re under arrest.”
“What for?” Evan demanded.
“Morn filed a theft report, which included a photo image of it; that was his leather pouch!” Javah replied.
“You’ll never be able to prove that.”
The crew listened to the petty bickering. And they also waited. They could not return to defend the Alpha-Quadrant with out Picard. And, at that moment, Picard was on the seventh world, trying to save William T Riker, and trying to save them all
--
Meanwhile, across the galaxy, Thomas Riker had downloaded all of the logs from Starbase 001, which orbited Earth. Several ships were tracked, and logged, the day and hour the Klingon ship had attacked Earth. All the other ships had been accounted for, except for one medium sized transport ship. Ownership could not be verified, so Riker aimed the Applewhite, which was the ship he had called his pride and joy, into space and went after Moriarty. The holographic villain had a three week head start on Thomas Riker’s ship, but Riker knew he could find both Moriarty, and the ship he was using.
And with Warp speed finally returned, at least for now, Moriarty could have taken Jake’s wife anywhere. But that would not deter Riker, Jake, and Marax, the Benzite Federation officer who Janeway had, earlier in the day, signed off and loaned to Riker, for the time being.
