Star Trek-RM: The Enemy Within… Grading/Discussion

We get the rerun of "Enemy" on our CW channel tomorrow(Sunday)at 11 A.M. If I'm home, I'll rewatch it and see if I might have missed an effect or tweak here or there. I doubt it. There wasn't much changed.

I just caught The Enemy Within and noticed something I had never noticed before.......In the teaser Kirk has NO arrrowhead insignia on his uniforn at all. How did they miss that? And if it was supposed to be like that then why?

I heard it was left off so that if they needed to flip the shot for whatever reason the arrowhead wouldn't be on the wrong side (unlike one of the Season 3 episodes - I think it was The Cloud Minders where one shot had the arrowhead on the wrong side...)

That makes sense to me I guess--I even considered it, but I knew some of you guys would know. Thanks Phillip

Wow, it's always interesting when someone discovers something fans have been wondering about for over 40 years. That's not a dig, just an observation. I wish I still had Trek discoveries ahead of me.

Anyways, I also know they removed the insignia when haveing the unitofmrs cleaned, sweing them back on later. Some episodes (I think I saw it in a 3rd seasoner) you can see the tips separating from the shirt. Anyway, I think it was intentional because the opening overhead shot of the planet's surface used to be "flopped", as a reverse image. This was "corrected" for the DVDs, but it may have been intentional, since it happened a few times during the episode. Leaving off the insignia on Kirk's shirt would make that easier. Also, Sulu's badge was covered by the dog he was holding and everyone else had those coveralls.

Yeah, it was an inventive way(at the time and with the paltry budget)of being able to flip the scene so the Alfa 177 surface set would look bigger and seem to have different features in reverse. But it just looks clumsy nowadays what with Kirk and others missing their shirt emblems and perhaps the CGI team should have attempted to drop some Enterprise arrowheads in.
