Star Trek redone on DVD?

It's the law of supply and demand. If the price is set too low, CBS won't be able to ship sufficient numbers in an orderly fashion, and keep all the retailers happy - and they can't just raise the price after all the fanfare of initial release. The price can always go lower if there is buyer resistance.

But the new sets will sell like hotcakes. I have no doubt.

Publishers always do market research - and the RRP is what the first tier of the target market has indicated it is ready to pay, in order to be the first to own a copy.

To be exact, S1 was $134, S2 and S3 $129 ( S1 , S2 and S3 ).

Now, retailers had them on the shelf for $99.99 release week, meaning the release week sets were 73.88% (S1) and 76.74% (S2/3) of the MSRP. If the same model holds true-which I sincerely doubt-this S1 set would go for $160. That's still far more expensive than Rescue Me S3 ($79.95) or Smallville S6 ($79.98).

Which is still at least TWICE what they SHOULD sell for. There's no excuse for a Season set of ANY show to go over $40.00 (American), PERIOD. The ONLY season of Trek that I EVER paid the full release price for was S4 of Enterprise, and ONLY because I thought it was that damned good (even better than my much beloved DS9).

CBS/Paramount, you can put it away...the days of my wallet taking it up the proverbial wahoo without lube are officially OVER!

They're charging a little over twice what Warner Brothers is charging for a season of Smallville on HD-DVD.

It's funny because all I actually want is Remastered Trek on DVD for now. That's quite a price hike for combining with a format that might not even last. I doubt I'll get into Hi-Def until they start switching off the standard Digital TV signals... by which time, nobody will be buying physical copies of anything.

Amazingly, despite the high price, this won't be the highest costing HD DVD/Blu-ray television set.

The first part of The Sopranos Season 6 (12 episodes) has an MSRP of $129.99. The second part will likely cost just as much. So $259.98 for one season (21 episodes). Ouch.

At least Freaks and Geeks was worth the $120 I paid for it... $200 for Star Trek? For a complete set, sure. But one season?

Lets not forget how many times this show has been released on different formats. How many times can you expect a fan base to keep forking over money for the same show? VHS had them for I believe 20 dollars per episode. On DVD alone it was twice. First with the two episode discs for 20.00 dollars a piece and then with the season box sets for 100.00. As soon as I saw them going down to 50.00 dollars per set I knew that this was going to happen. Nope, I'll wait until it goes down SUBSTANTIALLY. They always do. Just check your local bargain bin for movies that used to be high priced.

It's not the same old show. It's remastered. It's in High def....if you don't have a player or TV, oh well, some do and it will look better than it ever has. It also features the new FX. If you're looking to pay the same for this as you paid for a season of Smallville or Green Acres, think again. Aint gonna happen.
Personally, TOS is my favorite show of all time, it's going to look fantastic and the new FX make my mouth water. I have no problem spending that much for it. It's not about what other sets cost, it's about whether or not the entertainment value is worth it. For me it is. Hell, I spent more going out to the movies last year, and I didn't even get to keep those.

Rubbish. People still buy CDs (though admittedly they are declining), DVDs, newspapers, books... People like to have a hard copy, so they can feel their money.

I'd buy the large set at it's MSRP for a single reason: I haven't bought any of the DVD's yet. ;)

Once again, however, I'd buy the thing if one criteria was met: give me the original, restored episodes, warts, soundtrack, and all.

If they could do that, I'd gladly pay up to $300 per season (And I will, providing they don't half-ass it to help sales.) If not, I'll pick up all of the two-disc sets for my high-quality Trek fix.

Ironically, it's the older, 2-Disc DVD packs that have superior picture to the larger season sets. See here, courtesy of HeroComm.

The originals are on this set.

Having re-read the press release, I don't think they are you know. They'll be a DVD extra which compares the old FX sequences with the new ones but isn't that something entirely different? If it's the original 60's prints that floats a purist's boat, it might've have been a good idea for them to hang onto VHS (since the DVD versions were different too, remixed in Dolby 5.1). I'm no expert on HD disc space but surely these only contain TOS-R, one side containing the standard DVD resolution with HD on the other?

Which is why I won't be buying them otherwise.

I hope they release them on DVD, there's nothing official yet.

Why are you contradicting other board members who've already correctly said the DVD release HAS been discussed?

Settle down man, I had no idea that the TOS-R DVDs were coming out. :vulcan:

I'm not sure I agree with that assessment: That site claims that the 2-episode DVDs must be better since there are only 2 episodes, not 4, so the ones with 4 must be inferior because of compression. I don't suppose they've ever heard of DUAL LAYER DVDS? :guffaw:

Look this is sooo simple. Those fans who can not wait and must have it now they make an emotional Need impulsive buy, and the studio know this, thus the price. But for those who CAN wait will buy them on sale down the road or second hand. I payed no more than $20.00 for Smallville which I love & I'm doing the same for Veronica Marz.
You can argue this point if you like but it boils down to buying impulsivly or buying smartly; I prefer the latter.

My 2 cents

Same here, thanks for the information. :)

Agreed, but looking at the comparison caps there, it does appear that the older discs had slightly more detail. However, beyond those zoomed-in single frames, I don't know if I would really see the difference when watching the whole frame in motion or not.

I had many of the originals, but I didn't directly compare when I moved to the box sets. Has anyone else done a comparison?
