Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS*****

I just finished reading Q&A. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. The author, Keith Decandido, writes Q perfectly. This is John De Lancie's Q from TNG! The sarcasm and humor were hilarious. Q has some hilarious lines:
"What, no growl? No threats? No forward motions designed to unconvincingly intimidate?"
"Best listen to microbrain, chuckles."
"Oh very well, since you've apparently all taken your stupid pills this morning." (that's my favorite line)

I liked how the book tied together all the Q appearances in TNG. I also enjoyed that the book seemed to return to the traditional Star Trek themes of strange new worlds and meaning of life stuff.

Thanks, Keith DeCandido, for a really fun TNG story!

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

The new Security officer is Lt. Zelik Leybenzon. He was personally requested by Worf for the job. Leybenzon is your no-nonsense military type. He fought in the Dominion war and knew Worf on DS9. He is tough with his men while on duty. He tends to be anti-social and piss people off, so he tries to fix that by being more social and friendly off duty.

Data's replacement is Miranda Kadohata. She served under Data on the Ent-D and was Data's hand picked successor. She is married but her husband and newly born twins live on Cestus III. She regrets not having her family with her onboard but did not want to pass up the once in a lifetime opportunity to serve on the Enterprise as Second officer and explore the unknown.

Kadohata's an Asian name, Japanese is I'm right? What race is Leybenzon, sounds like it might be an alien name?

And, no word on a permanent CONN officer?

We are told that Leybenzon grew up on a farming world named Gault. Lt. Joanna Faur is the new conn officer. She replaces Sara Nave but we are not told a lot about her in the book.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

Cool. Looking Gault up on the web, looks like Gault was the name of the colony that Worf grew up on too.

It's one of those things that I enjoy knowing about, some people love to find out about the plots and stuff but I love finding out about characters.

What you've said has made me even more excited about this book.

It's Russian, as far as I know (granted, a big category). But this link might provide some insight as to how this name cropped up. ;)

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

She's half-Japanese, half-English, basically. She speaks with an English accent, but more working-class than Picard's accent, it seems to me. I'm not sure how someone from Cestus III has an English accent, though. Maybe she's not a native.

And Leybenzon is indeed Russian. Presumably Gault has a large Russian community, since the Rozhenkos (Worf's adoptive family) lived there for a while too.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

^I thought I remember that even being said or implied somewhere, but I could be mistken.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

The name of the boy whom Worf killed in the soccer game also had a Russian name, so I figured that Gault had a heavy Russian population, yeah.

Leybenzon was named for my ex-wife's stepfather, who died a few years back.

Lt. Joanna Faur is the alpha-shift conn officer in the book, yes.

Why do you assume that everyone there speaks with an American accent? :D

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

In retrospect, I was hoping that the TNG Relaunch would follow Titan's lead and even up the balance between the Human/Alien members of the crew and introduce at least another alien character.

As it stands, Worf and T'Lana are the only two aliens on the command staff.

Still, I'm still enthusiastic for the books and can't wait until Amazon UK or whomever get their hands on them.

I'm not. I'm assuming they'd speak with Cestian accents.

And on p. 23 you specifically say "She spoke with a British accent, even though she was born and raised on Cestus III." Which scuttles my non-native theory, but your own "even though" implies that it's unusual for a Cestian to have a British-sounding accent.

 Touche.

My assumption was that she was from an area of Cestus where they descended from British colonists, and they maintained the accent for whatever reason. *shrug*

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

I just picked up my copy today and I've only peaked at the first page. I love books that open with "They held off on letting this universe die in hopes that it would provide something interesting."

:guffaw:

I'll be adding that to my signature soon enough...

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

^ *bows* Thankee kindly. :)

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

I finished the book. I found it interesting how all of the appearances of Q(minus one) was linked together. How long did it take to work this out?
What is the basis for creating a race more powerful than the Q continuum, short of a plor device?

Hard to measure it. The basic idea has actually been rattling around in my head for quite some time. It wasn't until I was given the opportunity to write the book that I sat down and worked it out (rewatching every single Q episode in the bargain).

I don't know what a "plor device" is.... ;)

But seriously folks... There's always someone more powerful. That's the way the universe works.

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Titan cameo. Not to mention the Shelby one. And the Gorkon. ;)

Re: Star Trek Q&A -- Appreciation Thread ****SPOILERS***

I noticed Taurik is called 'Ensign'...wasn't he a Lieutenant in the "A Time To..." books?
