Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

God knows where that money has gone though. They've been overpaying people it seems. :)
Perhaps you should get your eyes checked. Discovery production wise looks better then most Trek films, let alone television shows. There are design elements that I don’t care for, but you can absolutely see the production side is far superior than anything Trek has shown previously on a tv screen.

Picard would never fight to destroy the Federation. He'd actively work against corruption within it, to fix the organisation, but he would never look to outrightly destroy it.

Discovery takes place so far in the future, I doubt that ANYTHING Picard does [with regards to the Federation] plays into the fall of the Federation that has been alluded to in Discovery trailers.

And Martin Luther just wanted to reform Catholicism, not start a new church or movement. But here we are.

Picard is already an insurrectionist (heh), a known order-breaker (including the Prime Directive 17+ times), and so on. A defining trait of Picard is that he will always do the right thing.

If the Federation is evil now, or just indifferent and criminally negligible, Picard will pull a Martin Luther and work outside the law if need be to restore equity or equality to the galaxy.

I have seen nothing to indicate the Federation is evil now, they may have strayed a bit from what they're supposed to be, but that doesn't automatically make them bad guys who need to be destroyed. There are a lot of levels between the "perfect utopia" it's supposed to be, and The Empire from Star Wars.
The impression I've gotten is just that they've gotten paranoid, and isolationist since the Synth attack on Mars. If my current theory is correct and Dahj is a synth, that could go a long way towards explaining why Starfleet refuses to help her, since they probably still see all Synths as the enemy at this point.

As he sees it.

Correct. I mean, it's true that (almost) everyone will do the right thing, from their point of view. No one is the villain of their own story.

But Picard strived to do the right thing objectively. He was not utilitarian, he was not the type who would work with Section 31 or whatever. He didn't obey orders blindly, and even held Riker in high regard for that fact. When faced with a moral dilemma or quandary, he would be the first to ask for as many opinions as possible, and react according to his conscience. When he defied orders, like in First Contact, he told everyone his plans and allowed for any dissent.

If a sentient being comes to him for help, whether they be a "synth" or Borg or hologram or Romulan or flesh-eating nanite, he *will* help them to the best of his ability. Even if Starleet tells him not to.

I can’t think of any time Picard has disobeyed orders when a significant number of people think he shouldn’t have, other than breaking the prime directive in nemesis and helping the Baku in insurrection.

TNG S5 "I Borg". Hell, he got a dressing down for next season in TNG S6 Descent (Part I)":

NECHAYEV: Captain, I've read the report that you submitted to Admiral Brooks last year regarding the Borg you called Hugh, and I've been trying to figure out why you let him go.

PICARD: I thought that I had made that clear.

NECHAYEV: As I understand, it you found a single Borg at a crash site, brought it aboard the Enterprise, studied it, analysed it, and eventually found a way to send it back to the Borg with a programme that would have destroyed the entire collective once and for all. But instead, you nursed the Borg back to health, treated it like a guest, gave it a name, and then sent it home. Why?

PICARD: When Hugh was separated from the Borg collective he began to grow and to evolve into something other than an automaton. He became a person. When that happened, I felt I had no choice but to respect his rights as an individual.

NECHAYEV: Of course you had a choice. You could've taken the opportunity to rid the Federation of a mortal enemy, one that has killed tens of thousands of innocent people, and which may kill even more.

PICARD: No one is more aware of the danger than I am. But I am also bound by my oath and my conscience to uphold certain principles. And I will not sacrifice them in order to

NECHAYEV: Your priority is to safeguard the lives of Federation citizens, not to wrestle with your conscience. Now I want to make it clear that if you have a similar opportunity in the future, an opportunity to destroy the Borg, you are under orders to take advantage of it. Is that understood?

PICARD: Yes, sir.

And it seems that actual decision has continued to haunt him for decades and be a part of the story situation in STP Season 1.

Another 'Picard' trailer was posted an hour ago. Mostly recycled from old trailers, except the bit part at the beginning which shows Picard being dropped on a barren planet by a Federation shuttle (wondering who is piloting it):

I think that’s him going to see his former commander friend.
