Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

The next next generation I'm going to guess is the Enterprise F and introducing its senior staff/bridge crew. Similar to how the Enterprise B was rolled out in Generations. If so , I hope they resist the urge of crew members being directly related to TNG characters .

I think the hype for SNW is overblown.

I tried sitting through the pilot of SNW.

I found the plot predictable (I knew what was going to happen about halfway through the show).

It's not the Second Coming of Trek by any means.

I've watched the first season and while I enjoyed it, I also agree that the praise for SNW is rather over the top. While I enjoy the nostalgic feel, it is basically rehashing every Trek trope in the book. That's not to say I don't like it, and it'll likely serve as a good entry point for new Trek fans, to me it feel like a revisit of greatest hit with a larger FX budget. While DSC and PIC are not perfect by any means, I do give them credit for at least trying to move the franchise in a new direction similar to what TNG and DS9 did.

if a Seven series depends on Matalas then you’d better hope Picard S3 is at least on par with SNW S1. Because given the lukewarm reaction to Picard S2, if S3 gets a similar reaction or just outright flops WITH the TNG crew then Matalas might not get another shot with Trek.

My hunch is that a Seven spin-off has a "soft green light" but a formal "go" is based on fan reaction of season 3. And even then, it might not be a deal breaker. Seven is a hugely popular character regardless and there is still clearly fan desire for a post-TNG Starfleet based series.

I'm just hoping she isn't killed off. :(

Brent’s character is specifically tied into the plot and the mythology in ways that if you were to show a poster, you would have a thousand more questions. And I think you want to earn it. But he plays a new old character that you have seen and never seen before. it’s, we think, a great way to do this that honors what has come before yet treads new ground.

I have so many questions

Oh, yay. We're getting a new "fan favorite" character. :shifty:

Picard: Season 3: The Fan Service deepens.

Context is for kings, here. Listening to the interview, that statement didn’t feel shoehorned. In fact, none of the sort of side-eye comments here did. The excerpts make Matalas sound bizarrely boastful in a way.

I maintain the hosts did a fine job overall, but IMO they put him into a position a few times and then sliced things accordingly. Likely inadvertently.

I’d have to go back and listen to that segment to expand upon that, however. Don’t have time just yet.

What context is needed for fan service? He says what his intent is and is at least honest about it. This is a season geared for TNG fans, which is a fine thing.
Context, it isn't a legacy character, it's a brand new character Terry thinks will be a fan favourite.
I wasn't referring to the new/old/whatever character.

But that is what you were quoting. So you can see my confusion.

There is a legacy character coming back that Terry had to convince the producers to let him use, as they didn't understand why.

There was one character I wanted to bring back that if you are a Next Gen fan you are infinitely aware of, but when it came to the powers that be they were like, “What?… Explain this to us? Why are we going to spend money to get this character and fly them in?” I’m like, “You just got to trust me.”… If you know you know, and if you don’t, you’ll be like, “Oh, that’s intriguing.” But if you know who that character is, you’re going to be like, “Okay, we’re deep diving into some Next Gen here.”

I apologize for the confusion. It was more a broad sweeping comment based upon my reading of the article and noting on the TNG fanboy fluff.

I don't think Matalas sounded boastful, just enthused about the project, which he should be. I'm just salty about that particular bit because nearly all the new characters we were supposed to love got swept out the door at the end of the last season to make way for the TNG cast, but we're supposed to get attached to this one.

, but we're supposed to get attached to this one.
If I may offer a small correction: We are supposed to already be attached because this is a love song to TNG and all the hope and positive vibes it represents. The fan boy's love song, as it were.

Hasn't Matalas all but admitted that Ro Laren is returning?

I mean, he said it's a recurring character from TNG, but no O'Brien. Who else could it be who's still alive and not already been used?

I'm just hoping she isn't killed off. :(

Given how strongly Matalas has hinted at a show headed by Seven, she survives the third season. If anyone dies, I'm thinking it's going to be a TNG legacy character (my hunch is either Worf or Riker).

There is a legacy character coming back that Terry had to convince the producers to let him use, as they didn't understand why.

Terry has suggested there will appearances from multiple legacy characters (for some reason the number three pops into my head but I'm not sure Matalas has ever said that). This character he was referring to he strongly suggests it's a cameo and that they had to fly the actor out to film the scene(s). He said that this character is a kind of deep dive into TNG and that fans of the show will now who it is, but others might not.
