I rewatched this one episode and was less impressed the second time, confirming my fears. Confirmation bias? Maybe, but I love TNG and was never going into this season to dislike it.

Dislike is too strong a word overall, discomfort may be a better word. I think I'll let this series sit awhile before coming back to it.

I saw episodes 3.1 and 3.2 on a long flight two nights ago. Good news: I’m in Hawaii after that flight. Bad news: Picard season 3 appears to be nothing beyond a shiny remix of 50+ years of Star Trek’s greatest hits. Maybe that changes deeper into the season, but seriously — haven’t they perfected birth control by the late 24th century?

I give episode 1 a three, and episode 2 a two.

Clearly, I’m no longer the target audience.

ETA: I apologize for not reading through the first 100 pages of this thread. Sorry if my observations have already come up.

finally getting caught up on season 3. love the sound track choices so far
really hoping Shaw gets snapped back into line, he's a bit too much of a dick. I'm fine with officers each having their own personality and not everyone being TNG ideal but he's over the top with bis blatant disrespect

Is he though? I mean, Picard and Riker boarding the Titan with the intent to lie to the captain to coerce him into a secret unauthorized mission is pretty blatantly disrespectful. Shaw just susses out their intent and makes it clear he won't tolerate their bullshit. From the point of view of someone who's not a fan, I rather think his level of disrespect to Picard and Riker is much lower than their level of disrespect to him.

Why am I thinking of an iconic Chanel No. 5 spot?

Hmm. All the martinet captains we've met, rolled into one.

Another massive terrorist attack not thwarted in time. Shades of the Xindi war. But what's the connection?

Another damn cliffhanger. Knocks it down to a 9.

No birth control will ever be 100% foolproof. Just call it a gut feeling.

But they cured the common cold, said Wesley!

Yeah, it's a bit of a cliffy as far as cliffhangers go, but it's nicely done.

Get used to it. The entire season is like that.

I love it. The stories are nicely crafted, with music that adds to rather than detracting from the plot, and the cliffhanger only helps to get one psyched for the next week's entry.

Shaw's sniping makes for an interesting character for sure. The OTT nature wasn't so outlandish either; there's a genuine depth to Shaw. (I recall a later episode explaining why, but it doesn't not work...)

It's an intriguing mix of new pieces mixed in with highlights from the movies. Beautifully orchestrated, they weirdly don't take me out of the scene. Well, maybe for just one cue, but I'm not dropping points for that moment. The season definitely starts on a high note, which it sorta had to do as well...

Who ever is the target audience?

Yeah, there are a number of callbacks. So far they're not intrusive and can fathom a couple possible reasons as to why they're being used (e.g. like seasons 1 and 2 being so single character-specific?). TNG was always ensemble, and IMHO only Worf could begin to hold his own show, but even then.

It is definitely not "50+ years of greatest hits" when Shaw makes his quips against Picard and Riker. (A later episode, from what I recall as I'm doing a rewatch, does reveal Shaw's reasons and if I remember, he's another victim of the Borg assault on Wolf 359 as much as Sisko was... there's enough room for more people to be survivors and to react the way they do. So far, Shaw's nothing less than great.)

It is definitely not "50+ years of greatest hits" when profanity is used. Season 3 avoided the F-bomb so far, and the use of the S-bomb felt very much in character for the requisite scenes. Really thoughtfully applied, and not trying to just throw in words because there'd be a kneejerk reaction because now the show is "being mature". Hell, even "tech" didn't bother me as they still remained full-syllable for other words. It's a pleasant mix, actually, and genuinely comes across more mature...

But at the end of the day, TNG was just that - an ensemble.

That's quite alright! :D

The episode had a very Wrath of Khan kind of vibe, I liked it, and like Captain Liam Shaw and his temperament and he's consistent throughout. This was something I was hoping for Seven where it wouldn't be easy for her to deal with a CO who may not see things the way she does. I like this conflict and I hope it progresses to something fruitful in the future of this final run. Picard and Riker was like old hat, chemistry was on point, something I look forward to as this serial goes on.

Yeah, when all else fails, trot out the shiny nebula routine. TWOK, TBOBW, this episode, NEM, and a dozen of episodes in between have all done it. A post with rankings and poll of "Which did it well and which didn't might be in order one day. So far, this episode definitely does it well and does something different with it (bring in the shuttle, which might be a theme variation, but it still has a fresh feel to it rather than NEM's derivative nature (NEM had strong points but it definitely didn't feel more than the sum of them. So far, PIC 3 does.)

It even starts out "in the 25th century", which was mildly jarring. The real callback, of course, is not TWOK in of itself but in how TWOK distanced itself from TMP.

I adored the conflict so far. It feels very much in line with what lead Trek commanders have done, all while exploring a new facet.

Picard and Riker feel true to what I would have expect for sure.

Definitely is a solid way to start a season.
