I have a problem with Shaw's "Picard is now retired admiral". How Picard can be retired, when he's doing active duty for Starfleet heading it's Academy? Isn't he The Chancellor of Star Fleet Academy? That's means he's is Starfleet personnel with current rank of an admiral. So he can not be retired in season 3 as he was in season 1.

We don't know that he was still Chancellor of the Academy. Doesn't seem so since he was in the process of moving from Earth.

Especially since it's told for us poor stupid modern audience members ;)

Yeah I agree. Audience members back during the STTVH days understood what Admiral Kirk meant when he told Spock about how humans used to use colorful language and how every word was a swear word. Basically they understood that language had changed by then and no one used it with regularity anymore. TNG basically followed this tenant. But once Discovery and Picard came out everyone swore constantly. I guess modern audiences need action and 21st century language to be able to understand the show. I always thought it was good stories. Same goes with the civilian clothes. The first two seasons of Picard is terrible in this. Almost everything the major cast wore was from old 21st century earth style. Is that because audiences today can't relate to futuristic costuming? Lol

I sincerely doubt that you have anywhere near as much of a problem with clothing as you try to make it sound like.

But to digress, I'll just leave this here:

I loved it and look forward to episode 2.

I quite liked Captain Shaw, given the circumstances I can understand his attitude. Who would want to retired officers forcing their presence on you and telling you to go way off course.

I find now with Fridays being the drop day It is always at least Monday by the time I log on here. Threads are always 80 90 pages in. It puts me of participating these days.

Since the invention of wax cilinders and then magnetic tape, verbal drift has screached to almost a complete halt.

Can you repeat this but not as if it was written during the Berman era?

Snarky reply from me aside (I couldn't not reference it) - it is the internet so I can't tell if you are being serious/sarcastic/my point was poorly made.

I was saying that you just take it as the UT changing their speech to something "modern" and for all we know they are speaking in a completely different manner

finally watched it. wasn't outstanding. wasn't bad. The aversion to lighting is getting annoying but that's going to be the way it is. I suspect they'll setup Shaw to be some evil bad guy or he'll redeem himself and die courageously. It's rare they just let someone be efficient but unlikable (that ship sailed with Prime Lorca).

The thing is, Shaw has been characterized beyond the mere circumstances.
Riker described him as an unfriendly face even before setting a foot on the ship.
So he has at least a passing familiarity with him.
And Seven’s opinion of him confirms Riker’s impression.
Now, of course, those opinions still are biased.

let’s see what the rest of the crew thinks.

My uncle on my father's side was a garbage man. Some of my dad's family would give him crap about lack of ambition, and "just" being a garbage man. But he would go and do his job in the morning, pick up a six-pack of Budweiser, and spend the rest of the day with a bottle and a smile. And he was a lot happier than people I've known living in McMansions driving Teslas who were doctors or lawyers who fit the perception of "success."

In a post-scarcity society where people could pursue whatever ends they wanted without having to worry about money, I could imagine there'd be a lot of people content with being garbage men or waiters, while being able to enjoy whatever endeavors they wanted.

Holy fucking shit. Your Uncle and I are kindred spirits. I wanted to be a "Sanitation Engineer" and work collecting trash. I went to college and even got degrees in civil and environmental engineering. I have 2 degrees.

Family, work, money, and desperation (the great recession) pointed me to a federal direction where I became way, (WAY), upper management. I never got to fulfill my dream. I envy your Uncle. Awesome man, doing an awesome job that he enjoys. I am seriously stoked that he is happy. And, IMHO, should be an example to us all!

Hard to take this seriously when this is completely inaccurate.

No they didn't. As someone pointed out TOS using 60s style idioms and turns of phrase.

Star Trek is a product of the time it is made in. Period.

And Trip probably spews some pretty 1990s/early 2000s lingo in ENT and while that's the earliest series of Trek it's still 130 years away. And somehow I doubt World War III and First Contact with aliens is going to turn us all erudite and make us forget our recent ancestors talked about dropping deuces.

As I'm fond of pointing out, people are still going to swear when they stub their toes or spill their coffee. No matter how advanced society may become.

Heck, didn't Picard throw off a "merde" or two, now and then?
