OK... first, the good:

I liked the interactions between Picard/ Riker and Picard/ (Riker)/ Seven.

The JL-Riker interaction is funny and slightly self-ironic. "Excellent recovery admiral!" - "Shut it, Will!"
"So long as we dont have to move or shoot well be fine."

Seven rocks! Loved how she threatened to throw them out an airlock. (It actually gave me fond Babylon 5 callback vibes, where Ivanova frequently threatened to do this to people.) But girl, don't blame Picard for your career change, it was your decision.

Captain Shaw. I already suspected he was a goner after the trailers. Now he's deadnaming Seven and being a general d-bag, so yeah, he's toast and good riddance. But I found him entertaining at the table, so he goes on the 'good' pile.

Loved that Laris/ Orla was back. Nice surprise.

Janeway name drop.

The not-so-good:

For me, it has the feel of a particularly tropey Trek movie. Which I'm sure many fans will love, so... No doubt our heroes will reunite to save their friend in peril and the universe, yadda yadda.

The worst offender of tropes, for me, would be if Bevs son (?) really was Picard's son, too. I don't care how they explain it, this plot belongs to soaps. We had foreshadowing in season 2 (Picard's speech about not having offspring), and in this episode, a big fat anvil: "I don't need a legacy!" And they probably chose an actor with a British accent for a reason. AND Picard hasn't spoken to her in 20 years... There's also a possibility that he is Bev's and another man's son. Even Jack Crusher's in a timey-wimey way. In any case, wouldn't Riker or other old friends know about him? Did she not see them for 20+ years either?

That said, I'm totally clinging to the hope that "son" is really a shapeshifting alien, the one who attacked Beverly, and who pretends to be her son as long as she's in stasis!

Hated they paired Laris up with Pic after all. I'm not a Pic/ Bev shipper, it just feels like a waste of her character and the actress to me and, let's be real, it won't last.

Sooo... Riker. I can't say I cared much about him and Troi as a couple during TNG, but I liked them a lot in Nepenthe. So ofc there's trouble in paradise. "Deanna and Kestra will eppreciate the time away from me." Oh-oh.

Is it a midlife crisis? "Galaxy class, young lady!" OK boomer. "Hello beautiful!" Seriously, are they going for "sleazy old dude" with him? Not everything on 90s tv was great!

Riker to Picard "Why did you cut everyone off?" He includes himself and Troi. Does he mean 20 years ago? Nepenthe didn't give me that impression, at least with Troi and Riker. Do they mean after season 2?

Some clunky exposition dialog, e.g. with Picard/ young LaForge and with Raffi/ handler. Speaking of which... warrior talk in Trek means Klingons. Is Worf her handler?

I do hope that other anvil will come true: "Youre gonna make it to cpt before you know it, Commander Hansen!"

I didn't hate it.
Laris + Picard a huge plus. C'mon man!

I thought about watching this morning at work but instead I came here to just read about it and get spoiled that way. Also to look at screencaps. From what I've read, it doesn't impress me. They've done Jean-Luc dirty in nutrek. I care enough to read spoilers but not put in the actual time watching it. Maybe I'll get around to it one day. I just HATE having to wait a week between episodes. What's the point in having a streaming service when it functions like old fashioned tv?

Imagine having to pump-action an energy rifle before every shot. :rommie:

People love a hero. (And a villain, but enough about Berman.) The idea that Matalas has come in to save us from mediocre Trek excites a lot of people...even though his hand has been lightly on the rudder for some of the most mediocre Trek in recent years. ;)

Lots of the best Trek has been around lately too, so no real need for this. They're critical successes, and hugely popular. Just keep things steady Matalas. You're trying too hard.

Gotta keep the monthly subscribers in it for as long as possible.

Somehow I got a feeling that this is not the real William Riker. "Deanna and Kestra will appreciate the time away from me" reminded me of what Thomas Riker said to O'Brian in the DS9 episode "Defiant" in order to keep him away.

And the way he told the story about Crash LaForge felt like it's sole purpose was to show off his knowledge, so nobody would ever think he wasn't William Riker. There were parts in the trailer where I had serious doubts that this was the real Riker, so maybe it's Thomas Riker? Or even a Changeling?

And did anyone else catch the lilie about "Enterprise F - slated for early decommission"? It's being shown at the same moment as the Voyager B.

Sure why not? Bring back everyone who has ever been in TNG. This will be the equivalent of the Seinfeld finale.

I think my favorite thing about the episode is that it quashed my fear that they would completely mishandle Laris' character. We knew she was back for, supposedly, just one scene. That has me highly suspecting she'll meet an unfortunate end. What I dreaded was that she'd have 30 seconds of screentime saying she's leaving, or we'd just see her for equally as long wherever she is before she's killed.

Instead, we got all her smarts, played to perfection per usual by the wonderful Orla Brady. It'll be grand if reports were faulty, and there is more Laris to come, but at the same time... I'm satisfied.

Other than Netflix all the other streaming services do the same. I hate the wait as well, but I do like discussing them after each episode. I also find that I don't remember shows I binge as much as the ones I watch week to week. Having that time off allows me to absorb them. I watch a lot of streaming shows and they are all week to week so maybe I'm just used to it.

How do you think Picard was done dirty in the season 3 premiere from what you've read?

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder what the page count will be when I finally watch the episode this evening.

I love the level of excitement...but I feel totally left out LOL!

I always watch these shows with my wife around 9pm EST on the day they premier, so it's like old-school TV watching. So, I'll be way behind and the show literally just dropped a few hours ago!

Nope. They said they were trying to emulate the feeling of the TOS Movies. So I wanted those fresh in my mind.

I already re-watched all of TNG and the TNG Movies before PIC Season 1. Didn't need to do that again.
Ah ok. I also re-watched all the treks except TOS , during the pandemic ending with Enterprise last year.
Just to get myself in the TNG mood I watched Elementary, My Dear Data and Ship in a Bottle yesterday for obvious reasons..lol ...will probably watch the Lore episodes soon as well.

Because Patrick didn't want it to be.

So i assume did not learn their lesson from Nemesis by allowing the actors too much control, and not that i am dumping on Nemesis, i mean that movie is now on Citizen Kane level compared to the mess the franchise has been in since its reboot in 2009. lol
