Assuming they were referring to the northern hemisphere of Romulus, how would such radical speciation occur to demonstrate such physical characteristic changes on the same world, when they are relative newcomers? Cross-breeding with Remans, perhaps?

Further, how did Remans come to exist? Were they the original native inhabitants of these worlds and got conquered when the "Raptor Vulcans" arrived and subjugated them as second-class citizens of their new empire?
It must be a "Let that be your last battlefield" thing where ridged romulans were forced to live north (or unridged romulans forced to live south?)

Yes, the same Spock who's so great that he's never mentioned at all in regards to the Romulan supernova, which itself is always discussed, or how it suddenly disappeared into a black hole Spock created. :vulcan: Not by FNN journalists, Admiral Clancy, or even Picard himself.
WRT the FNN interview, the Romulan Star going Nova is only mentioned in passing. It WASN'T what the reporter is interested in, but she used it as a segue to get to what she was really interested in - Why did Picard really leave Star Fleet (which he had never really talked about before to anyone.

we more or less know how people talked in the 19th centurie - 24th not so much

... do we scrap cecille b demille's work entirely (not a bad idea for any reason)?

It’s best to assume we’re just getting a contemporary translation from however slightly and unpredictably 24th-century English will differ from what we’re used to. (Who knows, maybe Picard and his family actually sound like native French speakers?)

really? both the royal navy and the deutsche marine have more admirals (* - ****) than warships (don't know about the usn). whether those are suitable to command more than a desk is open to discussion, though.

the deutsche marine has 33 admirals for 29 warships (and that does count minesweepers)

That is because their fleets have been reduced drastically over the years and promotions still have to be given if earned, add to that how much longer we are living these days and it makes it even worse.

The situation in Star Trek is very different with 10's of 1000's of ships all over the galaxy at any one time and the ability to make more anytime they want, cant do that quickly with officers or trained crew.

The best way to counter the issue is to introduce automation but even that ends up creating new problems if it is taken too far.

I do wonder how much of that comic is going to end up sticking?
Maybe some of it or maybe none at all, I would be very surprised if none of it sticks in which case the question then becomes which parts.

Everyone is going to have their own preferences.

What if Rios is a synth? And the ibn Majid was a Starfleet testbed for synthetics controlling a starship? Which would explain why all records of it were wiped away.
If a hologram can be capable enough to perform surgery there is no reason it cant Captain a Starship or act as Chief Engineer, at least in a backup sense if nothing more.

I was more surprised Clancy didn't namedrop Spock as a defense to claim the Federation didn't really abandon the Romulan people and had a backup plan all along just to make Picard look even more foolish. (Although to be fair, saying this might be a lie as we don't know if the project was Fed authorized, although the Jellyfish was commissioned by the Vulcan Science Academy)

Episode 8/10 for me. Finally we got to know the whole main cast and we can start the proper plot of the series.

OK, so three episodes in, that's the pilot episode - no pun intended - finally finished and the series proper can start....

Most shows are able to accomplish this in one episode, not 3. We're 1/3 of the way into the season and we're "just getting started." That's just bad writing/poor planning right there.

Remember when Picard was lecturing the rich guy from the twentieth century? It would seem that there are still people with enormous estates and others who live in quasi poverty. Maybe the rich guy was still rich after all and Picard was just pulling his leg.:rommie:
Well Picard's family DID own a working Vineyard at the time...Picars didn't want some Mogul from the 20th century horning in on his "1%"...;)

To be fair, Picard has 10 episodes and Mandalorian has 8. The Mandalorian only "got started" on his true mission at the end of episode 3 as well. And even after that much of what followed was filler episodes.

I'm opposed to the scene in any form. I would rather see Picard go out on the frontier, where he was meant to be his entire life. Not waiting to die while parades go on around him.
You may get your wish, I doubt Patrick Stewart would want to do it forever so he will need a way out for his character.

Or at the very least a way to be around for the inevitable spinoff and just some guest appearances every now and then.

Or kill him off saving Soji and spreading the truth about what happened to bring about the Zhat Vash, with the removal of restrictions on synths and a nice big party at the end or something.

Why do you assume Spock's plan (and the ultimate failure of it in the Prime Universe) were ever made public/common knowledge?

14 Federation worlds were ready to secede because of the original evacuation plan. If Spock did come up with the 'Hail Mary' Red Matter plan - and further that it would only require a small ship that he would fly personally; why make that common knowledge IF they believe it'll just continue to piss off member worlds?

I think the best way to handle this is to have Picard sacrifice himself to bring Data back in a new body. Fans lose Picard but get back Data. Brent doesn't want to be Data again full time anyway and he can always just pop up as holographic Noonien Soong who Data talks up once in a while for advice.

So Starfleet didn't even bother to investigate why a scary supernova suddenly disappeared? The Vulcan Science Academy just wiped the Jellyfish from ever existing (although to be fair we now see this happens with the ibn Majid).

No one knows anything about red matter or who has it? Considering how dangerous it is, that's even more concerning.

As a 3-episode pilot, which I hope will never be done again, I would give it an average rating of 5.5/10. Not terrible. Not great. If this had been the first time I had met Picard, and had no investment in Trek or his character, I would already have moved on to a new show to binge. Not even close to comparable to the last 20 years of Golden Age Tv. Compared to Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones, etc, it is not even close to that. KurtzmanTrek continues to flounder creatively and artistically.

Totally agree. I had the same reaction to "The Mandalorian" when everyone was saying "OMG! BEST SHOW EVURRRR!!"

Like, umm, have you seen any TV in the past twenty years? There is some great stuff out there. Truly great. Not this kind of wishy-washy, poorly paced, poorly structured silliness.

Just because a show is Star Wars or Star Trek doesn't mean we shouldn't hold it to the same standards we hold other shows. None of this stuff is actually good. It's...okay at best, but full of unforced errors in the writing, shoddy characterizations and just some crummy storytelling.

I think Picard still shows glimmers of potential and there are some story threads I'm lightly intrigued by, but so far, this has been a very slow, stumbling start. Fortunately, there's still plenty of truly wonderful TV out there to keep myself occupied. BCS comes back in just a couple weeks!

Of course they probably did; but why wouyld scanning a Black Hole show them it was created by a small craft, and said craft was piloted ny Mr. Spock?

Hell, assuming Spock did it on his own with just Geordi and the Vulcan Science Academy resources and never informed Star Fleet - (which would actually be very IN CHARACTER for Spock - given the events of STVI:TUC and TNG S5 - "Unification I & II"); and hell if you think that Spock knew about Star Fleet/The Federation ending the evacuation plan after the Synth attack; it even explains why it was all so 'last minute' on Spock's part.
