Man this was good. That scene with the admiral was awesome. I hope Picard doesn't loosen his ideals though.

My wife has not read the comics nor seen any other Trek (a bit of TNG thirty years ago) and it makes sense to her...

I didn't say it doesn't make sense, I said you get a whole lot less of the context of existing relationship between the characters. The show doesn't even explain that the woman you see at the end was Picard's first officer during the Romulan evacuation.

And without the comic, Laris being Tal Shiar comes completely out of nowhere.

Does it need to? I'm sure we will get the required info dump in Episode. 3.
How is it anymore out of nowhere than any other piece of information expressed through dialog?

also, if they kinda deviate from the comics that's just a reason for more buts. and quite frankly nobody needs more of those

I really liked this episode, but was disappointed by the length. A few highlights for me:
  1. Loved the way the synth channeled Data's mannerisms, and also the callback to his numerous Enterprise computer lockouts (fast hands, darting eyes, multiprocessing) as it drops the planetary defenses.
  2. The synth is named F8 (Fate).
  3. I initially thought we'd get a surprise with Geordi being the guy who says "Good morning, plastic people!" (the opening shot showing him walking down the dark hall seems to conceal his face, perhaps as a tease to the audience).
  4. We know Geordi isn't dead for two reasons: (1) Picard's doctor mentions him, and (2) he took off First Contact Day, assuming he really was leading the rescue armada construction effort (they note that only a skeleton crew is on staff that day). Same with Worf.
  5. Picard's doctor from the Stargazer; they go back quite a ways! Does this hint at a Crusher (or discussion of same) in a future episode.
  6. The Constitution class hologram! (saw it in the preview on the Ready Room last week, but still cool).
  7. I liked the fact that after 14 years, there are parts of the Borg cube that might still contain active Borg.
That's all I can think of right now. Can't wait til next Thursday!

My only complaint is that when they are telling a story over 10 episodes, we are going to get some "filler." That's what I thought this episode was. What they should do is drop all 10 episodes at once, so we can binge watch them, instead of having to wait a week for a measly 42 minutes. These episodes should be at least one hour long.

How is moving the plot forward and expanding background "filler"?

In theory a streaming show can be as long as the story needs. But commercial consideration tend to trump that.

Yes, that's probably a better way to put it. I think the first episode should have been 2 hours and the rest of the episodes a full 1 hour.
It will probably be due to syndication, if they are already edited to the right length they wont have to edited again, an hour would have been nice but this way its cable and terrestrial tv ready.

It would have been a nice bonus for those who pay for it on CBS and Amazon to get hour long episodes, the 45 minute versions could have been shown on normal tv, on saying that it just adds more complexity so they probably thought why bother.

One thing I am not a huge fan of is that they are using so much implied knowledge from things established in Picard: Countdown that we're being forced to get the comic to understand everything. Also they don't mention this fact in the show anywhere so if it weren't for you guys I'd have no idea the comic was even there, and was required reading to understand half the main characters.

I dunno, why can't they do a "Previously on Star Trek" with pages from the comic? :)

Traditionally the print material has been a separate canon, so I hope they don't go in the direction of having entire print series be official alpha canon that will be used as implied knowledge for future story developments.
From what I've read over in the literature forum, all the comic does is reveal Musiker was his first officer after he left the Enterprise, and show how Laris and Zhaban ended up living with Picard. I'm pretty sure we'll get a full introduction to Musiker next week, and the stuff about Laris and Zhaban is not really that important to the show.

I believe it's shown on TV in some places, so they so need to leave room for commercials where they have them.

Rated this one a '9." Might have possibly given it a "10," but the little editorial next to it proclaimed "TNG is back!" Being only 2 episodes in I am not so sure. I've loved everything so far but we are still only 1/5 of the way and I am starting to worry that they are making things too complex and sophisticated. Intrigues within intrigues within intrigues. Part of my worry is paranoia. Discovery laid the groundwork for some compelling elements, however, the constant change of leadership and direction did not do that series or fans any favors. I will add that Wil Wheaton's "Ready Room" series really has me feeling positive about "Picard" not suffering a similar fate. That series is the most sincere and insightful after-shows I've seen.

Again, I am glad they have Jean-Luc acknowledging and embracing his age in the story. Things in this series are a bit melodramatic (Picard's fatal medical condition) but that's okay. I loved that "Can you keep a secret?" line (I believe that was taken from a real life interview that Christopher Lee once gave wherein the interviewer asked him about his duties in the intelligence service during WWII). I am hoping the optimism of Star Trek will shine through in the Soji-Narek relationship for no other reason than there's a lot of depressing shit happening in the world today and I would enjoy a good old-fashioned love story come out of this.

The teaser was probably one of the most potent one I've ever seen in Star Trek. The Synth's taking out the Mars shipyards. Considering it was a group of them and they could only follow orders I am hoping that is a thread not forgotten. Strikes me as odd that Starfleet did not do a complete investigation. Right now it feels like it happened and Starfleet just threw up it's hands and said, "Oh well!" And it's turning away from the entire field of cybernetics and A.I. seems a wild overreaction to a tragedy. It's like if the U.S. abandoned the space program after The Challenger accident.

Anyway, I pray the rest of the series lives up to what we've been given so far. LLAP.
