Star Trek Phase II: Our Shelved Episodes

^Can someone explain how that works? How can someone "purchase" an interest in a work copyrighted by someone else? Unless whoever had rights to WWW licensed it to you? Even then, doesn't it still remain theirs to do with as they please?

He can purchase my scripts, my costumes, my props, and my ability to comment or have input into the production of my scripts. The first three are copyrighted by ME not by CBS. The last is, well, also something I alone have control over, not CBS.

That's very good to hear, James. The website disappearing gave a different impression. I can ship you the frocks after all - because maybe you can still use them.

About half. What's left is a location shoot on top of a hill (supposedly Promontory Summit) and shots inside a basement. Not that it matters...it's a dead episode. It's just a shame they couldn't get the footage to do an edit for Mark Burchett's family.

Again, this relates to my question about how much a filmmaker owes cast and crew to finish a work, especially when the labor was all volunteer, and people spent time and money to help do the shoot.

Yup. You have my opinion.

For WWW, when the frustrated other party told me that James flatly refused I even suggested re-shooting the scenes James was in with another actor and finishing with another actor because he is so dead set against working on it. The suggestion got me defriended and blocked on FaceBook by most of the other actors I asked if they'd come back to finish their roles without James. I took that as a "no" answer and advised the party to just give up on the idea. Mark's work will just never be seen, unfortunately.

I was hoping more crew and actors would chime in, not because I want to sow discontent, but because I am genuinely curious about how they feel on the subject. Then again, I suppose some of them might not wish to burn any bridges by speaking their minds.

One of the reasons I got re-involved with Exeter (I originally wrote a script which got shelved and so wasn't a big participant post TTI principle photography) was precisely because I wanted to make sure the dozens of people who'd put in their sweat-equity (plus contributors who'd put in cash) had a finished piece to show for it. It's been quite gratifying to see and hear how happy they are to see a finished show at last, warts and all.

Your reaction was noble, and the results were wonderful. That said, I don't think third party comments will help this situation. JMHO.

As both an actor and a crew person, I do feel the finished product is one of the perks of working on these productions. And I think, as a producer I have a responsibility to to my best to make sure that work isn't wasted.

That said, sometimes events overtake you, and best intentions aside, sometimes you just have to cut your losses.

I have two episodes of Intrepid partially completed, which would have been out by now were it not for external pressures. One of those mostly just requires post work, but another needs about another 8 pages or so shot. I'm hopeful we'll get that out of the way early next year so we can move on to fresh material. I could get one of them out in fairly short order if I cut it down into a short, but that would mean some people being cut entirely, and I don't want to do that.

Bottom line here, we all do our best, but sometimes life just gets in the way.

We've been fortunate enough to be able to use everything we've shot to date with one exception: a blue-screen episode shot by Tim and Renda Carr that we just haven't been able to clean up enough to actually use with our digital sickbay. We've looked at it repeatedly, and worked on it with three different folks trying their hand at keying out the blue screen, but it's just not lit well enough. We plan on reshooting it for our upcoming STARSHIP DEIMOS, but we were heart-broken we couldn't use the existing footage.
