Star Trek Opeing in Japan on Friday May 29

I still think ST will do better in Japan than Mexico.

I just don't see many Mexicans that interested in ST, whereas the average IQ would probably be higher in Japan because they have a higher level of technology.


I am just picturing an empty town hall in a little Mexican village compared to packed cinemas in Tokyo!

I notice that in Anime dated in the 20th century I have seen writers/producers of shows mention or pay homage to Star Trek. ST must be a really small cult in Japan. Still, movies that emphasize action should do well overseas, this ST movie SHOULD do well in Japan, but prob will not.

Most non-Japanese films are released in Japan subtitled and undubbed, I guess because it's cheaper than recording an entire voice track. Exceptions are kid-friendly titles, which are released in both dubbed and undubbed or only dubbed versions. For example, Beverly Hills Chihuahua (don't ask me why I know) was showing undubbed at only 1 theatre in Tokyo (a downtown theatre in an area where many English-speaking foreigners live). A kids' film like Night at the Museum probably played 50% dubbed and 50% undubbed, sometimes on separate screens at the same multiplex. The dubbed version will usually have a longer run.

In defense of Tulin, some people who do not understand the connotations of the word simply consider it an abbreviation of Japanese. I have encountered this before and corrected them on this point.

Use of the word has come up at Trek BBS before. All people who have used it say they used it out of ignorance: they didn't know that Japanese and Japanese-Americans find it extremely offensive or say they've heard Asians use it themselves. I'm willing to believe their explanations. I'm also thankful and glad that you, Rama, and the other members feel so strongly against the use of this slur that you speak out about it and try to educate others.

It's funny, the post talking about supposedly higher IQ in Japan compared to Mexico was laughable and pathetic...

But I find it strange that Japansese people are so offended by 'Japs', I mean, it's just a shortnening of their nationality. Brits, Frenchies, Japs, Yanks etc... - I would have thought it wouldn't be an issue. I suppose history has a lot to do with it but still.

There are far more obviously offensive words out there that are very commonly used to describe minorities, be they racist, homophobic or sexist.

In contrast Jap seems tame, and the fact that the majority of people use it without meaning disrespect just substantiates that point even more.

Edit: I didn't realize this was a term that actual Japanese people find offensive. I just assumed it was the usual parade of self-loathing WASPs who bend over backwards to find offense on the part of other people and villify all white people. THOSE are the people for whom I will INTENTIONALLY be unPC around because it's almost like a cause for them to go around and find offense and to take umbridge. It's some kind of weird self-loathing and I cannot stand it.

Oh and for the record, in Australia, we shorten a LOT of words out of a kind of laziness and offense is most times never intended. I, personally HATE the practice, but there you go.

Also, I find the use of the word gaijin and what it implies to be offensive. Can the Japanese people here please get all their countrypersons to stop using it?

Current reference: This is the Star Trek XI forum on a private Star Trek board where words that carry racist connotations are considered bad form, and by bad form I mean you can be warned if you keep it up, particularly when a Moderator has made that informally clear in that very thread. Just to note, racist comments aren't even allowed in TNZ.

Anyhoo, as to the movie in Japan, I hope it does well. It would be nice to see Japan help carry the movie over the 100 million mark.

But If you insist on using that word out of some juvenile desire to be offensive, that is, of course, your choice. Just don't do it around here.

Non-Japanese who find the word offensive are not "self-loathing WASPs." They are good people who don't like seeing others disrespected. There are many racial and religious slurs I find offensive; I'm not white, Anglo-Saxon, or Protestant, and I like myself very much.

Before stereo television sets, most western TV shows were broadcast in only a dubbed version. Nowadays, shows are usually broadcast with English on one sound channel and Japanese on the other or are broadcast in English with Japanese subtitles. Rarely, shows are broadcast only in Japanese stereo.

On this BBS, the term is not considered acceptable -- not even in TNZ -- and this policy has been stated clearly on a number of occasions. Please refrain from using the term.

Er, no. It's just a shorter word for gaikokujin which is literally gai 'outside' koku 'country' jin 'person'.

I've seen scans running around on the internet of a Star Trek: TOS manga that actually looked halfway decent, with some interesting original storylines. I believe Tokyopop translated it, but I'm not sure if it's still in print. Tokyopop has a habit of letting things that aren't mega-popular neverending shonen series go out of print almost instantly. Anyone seen this in Japanese or English?

I've seen it around. its still in print but I dont really know how successful it is. It targets an ultra-niche market and if someone like myself, who is both a Trek fan and manga fan, doesnt read it I can't imagine too many others who would lol.
