Star Trek: Online

Well, I've been downloading for 2 days now. I'm at 57%. And now download speed has plummeted to about 1.5 K/s.

It's dis-heartening to say the least. If I can't download the game, I really can't give them any feedback on it, now can I? :(

Well think of it like this. You will miss the first few painful days of server torture we call stress testing

it's been better than i expected, but i was expecting total crap... i haven't gotten far enough to have a really solid impression. What it has done is move the game from a "day 1" purchase to a "month 2" purchase while they iron out all the bugs.

Thats what I meant, just seems weird Cryptic had done a piss poor job of getting this out to the public.

I think the beta's been in surprisingly wide release, Massively alone had 10,000 keys available yesterday.

Most MMO's don't have free trials at launch, partially because they need time to iron out the inevitable kinks and bugs and ensure server stability for paying subscribers before letting in folks looking for a demo.

I'm going to be preordering on Steam later today and will start my download.

It only took me a little over a half a day to download the client via fileplanet on Firefox.

Got through the tutorial and made it to the Earth starbase before calling it a night last night. A few bugs, was a ship when I was supposed to be a person, was a person when I was supposed to be a ship, got kicked off the server a few times, but overall a very pleasant testing experience.

Cryptic can chalk me up to the so far pleasantly pleased column.

I know that this is beta but right now it seems like Cryptic got Star Trek as wrong as Bethesda did. There should be more diplomacy and peaceful exploration. I did the so called "exploration" missions in the Delta Vocanis Area and all I found was beaming down to a bunch of Outposts and killing scores of Nausciaans and Gorns. Thats pretty sad, its called Exploration content meanwhile its just the same old faces from normal missions and your slaughtering them wholesale.

Boldly going where no one has gone before? More like boldly going where everyone has gone before and blowing the crap out of anything in your way.

I'll still probably play the game at launch but as a Star Trek game, I call Fail. If it were a Generic Sci Fi game , it'd be pretty good. Ironic a bit.

It's a MMORPG I really can't figure out what you though it would be.

Played for about three hours yesterday. First impressions:

1. It's fun. Everything I say below, put this first. I had fun.
2. Character creator is incredible. Amazing amount of control. Loads of fun right there.
3. Space combat is awesome. The ships looks beautiful, space seems interesting, the fights are tactical and interesting. Probably the best ST space sim I've played, and that's saying something. One major bug that needs sorting is the way ships can get 'hung up' on objects like asteroids.
4. Loooove the ship customization options. As someone who used to 'reconfigure' ship models for fun, I love that I can do it so easily here.
5. Ground-based action is... clunky. What can I say, it's clunky. I like some of the tactics, but ground combat seems boring and grindy. Might seem better with other players. Not awful but not great.
6. Love the emotes. Spent half my time dancing.
7. Lack of audio options is disappointing.
8. I can't run the game on the highest settings. Sometimes it looks budget, but that's my computer's fault for not being able to run the higher specs.

Overall, it's almost precisely what I wish a Star Trek game was, except maybe with less plot and too much combat. Five years ago I would have been floored. Because of the gfx and clunkiness of the ground action, I'm am reserved but not disappointed. I had fun. That's all that is important.

After playing it for a few hours, I find it sort of boring, the ground combat in particular is not very interesting... :(

Meh, you can't roam around anywhere except on the space station. Not even on your ship. The missions are very fps -ish. I wanted to explore, not be forced to do missions ot see things. I'll play for the free beta to see if it gets better, but so far it's typical Cryptic.

Aeolusdallas - you need to reduce that image size. It's too big and against board policy.

Oh please, it's a game - not The Sims: Star Trek. If they had a civilian character class you might have more of a point, but in the game you're a Starfleet officer, given command of a starship due to your actions in the tutorial missions. Even Kirk didn't get to go where he wanted based on his whims (see Amok Time where he almost got busted down because he wanted to make a quick stop at Vulcan on the way to be part of a "impressive display" at an inaguration ceremony).

And there is 'Exploration' in the "Star Clusters" content (2800 star systems per a Dev post in the closed beta); although I will admit being unimpressed with the way the Star Cluster Sector Space maps work - but again they were only unlocked for us near the very end of closed beta and had some nasty access bugs that caused crashes. For the most part the crash issues have been fixed.

I really enjoyed the closed beta phase, and am looking forward to teh game launch myself. Is it perfect? Nope; but like all MMOs it should only improve going forward.

Well, the good news is my new computer just arrived ahead of schedule.

The bad news is, due to prior commitments, I won't be able to even set it up, let alone play STO, until tomorrow evening.

:vulcan:

Most Star Trek fans would probably enjoy Sims: Star Trek edition.

Why? because Star Trek is more about the people, and the sims are about people so it might work well together.

I agree that a Star Trek themed Sims would do well. But MMORPG's are not sims. Example Sims online tanked.

Who the hell said anything about sims? I just want the option to see the inside of my ship and beam down to planets that I don't have missions for and walk around. Defying orders? bring it on! after all this is an mmoRPG.

Cryptic is doing what they do best. Avoid innovation, serve up lots of grind, and blind everyone with a flashy character creator.

like all MMOs it should only improve going forward.

lol, you obviously never played Star Wars Galaxies.
