Star Trek Online Question.

The Castellan

I picked up a copy for $10, and curious, is it all playing against other players, or are there any single player modes?

I'm new at this one, so I better ask before I start anything.

Most of the missions are done on your own. PvP and co-op missions are supplementary to that, at least as the game stands now.

You can do all missions in teams.
Most PvE stuff is soloable though, with the exceptions of group missions calld fleet actions and Special Task Force (STF) missions, STFs are endgame though.

You can play all missions with friends or other people online if you choose to, but you can play them on your own as well.

Certain events or missions are required to have teams, STFs and Fleet actions. A huge change is coming to the game on the 5th. If you're looking for help, I'm willing to help and or I'm sure the TrekBBS Fleet is as well.

That "huge change," by the way, is actually today (the original timeframe was between today and the 8th).

Most things can be done solo until you hit Vice Admiral. See above comments.

If you play on a team, they are limited to 5 characters. Some missions need more than one team and that can be challenging to orchestrate.

Zones may have multiple copies (instances) which are limited to 75 players. Which seems small for something that's advertised as a MMO. So although there maybe 100,000 players online (I just picked that number out of the air), you will never see more than 74 other players at one time. The game I played just prior to STO was Pirates of the Caribbean which allows up to 250 characters. Which is exciting when you're waiting for an invasion from Davy Jones and his haunted crew.

When the game goes free-2-play on 17 Jan 2012, it will probably get extremely crowded. If you need to escape the crowds:

Check out the bottom floor of Earth Space Dock which is rarely used. (I wish they would allow fleets to rent office space there. Could have some interesting possibilities.)

Retreat to your bridge and ship's interior. Recline in your crew lounge and admire your trophies. Invite a friend or two.

Visit the Captain's Table (a station floating in space/time that opens as a veteran's reward).

So this has finally made the switchover to FTP? Sweet! I may get back into it for a while.

The 17th it opens up. It's F2P now only for people that had subscribed in the past, goes full-up next tuesday.
