Star Trek on DVD

Well I decided I would like to buy some Star Trek DVDS, and my perdicament is that the DVDS are 20 dollars a season for the old un remastered onesm where as the new remastered ones in stereo range from roughly fifty to eighty dollars! which is way too much for me. So do i wait for the price to come down on the one i really want or go with the cheaper one and be happy i got it at that price?>

Is there any thing that really makes the reamastered ones far superior besides the obvious?

The deciding question is - which is more important to you, the story/characters or the graphic quality. If you want to know/study the stories, the old DVDs should be good enough, especially on a limited budget. You could also try the library to see if they have any of either before making the investment.

Have you thought about buying them second-hand?

I got both my ENT and VOY collection for a good price. The sets were as good as new; some DVDs weren't even unpacked. I guess their previous owner must have been a hardcore Niner. :p

Yes I have been all over Baltimore looking at different stores. 20 is the cheapest I can find TOS, Deep Space is my ALL TIME favorite they are about 35 each used at REcord and Tape Traders they have seasons 4-7. TNG i am sick of em all seen em all 2000 times, and VGR I never loved it, its okay because its STAR TREK, other than mister Tuvok, and and sometimes Mister Tommy Paris, and 7 o 9 its not my cup of mountain dew, ya dig? But back to Deep Space I got season number 4 already around XMAS watched for the Cause loved this episode!!!

The twenty dollar TOS ones are new. And the cheapsest I've seen the Remastered ones for are 45 or so online. And wow. I could have the whole series for 60 dollars. I think i am leaning toward the old ones, but then i dont kno I want to be totally satisfied with my purchase and the news one that I watched online a few years ago at CBS dot com were awesome! Plus since that is the way they made them in the late 60s it seems that preseving thier work is really in a way the way it should be. I am genarally against going back in time and doing this sort of thing, but DAMN the reamasted TREK looks awesome! What do i do!

Enterprise i saw for 35 or so at C DEPOT. So yeah its a tuff call and i might just go get it. I could always upgrade one day i supposed. Arg this is making me nuts.

I dont kno! Ususually the story, but the remastered ones are SO beautiful and the show looks better than I thought ever possible!

Oh well i broke down and just bought all 3 seasons of STAR TREK! I own all the episodes now! Wow I will prolly never in my life have enought time to watch all the episodes, but hey they are neat to have anyway. I really wanted the REmastered ones I saw "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and when the spaceship was flying toward the pink could near the edge of the galaxy, boy that looked so pretty. But as i saw upon my viewing of this episode last night and this morning, well it doesn't look all the different in the original version. Plus, as a bonus I was happy to see that the picture looks awesome, so much better than the VHS tapes I had of Star Trek, and even better, which i didn't know it was in stereo!! Holy shipwreck Bruce, this DVD box set is indeed a super value. Back in 1995 I got 3 Star Trek episodes "Journey to Babel" "Wink of BLink of an Eye ( I forget)", and my all time favorite as a kid, "Mirror, Mirror". So after reading so many negative review about the original DVDs i thought they would be awful, ie the picture sucks- not true, theres some dust, but the colors are vibrant! And it is cleaned up alot! Secondly, the effects on here are not that bad, they look very much like TNG's effects at this point in time to me, as a child the looked much worse, but having the original effects is important to me since they were under so many constraints ie time, money, and the ability to find a company who could get it done back in the 60's. These DVDS are great 20 dollars a season, what i paid for 3 tapes back in the day. Bottom line the stories are the same, and the 3 mins of effects added, dont make or break the show, and 20 dollars a season for new DVDS is a monster deal. Anyone else in Baltimore should head to Suncoast in White Marsh mall. The manager is buying the last of em from a company going out of business to be able to see these at such a low price. Record and Tape Traders in Towson also had a couple, (same parent company FYE) so jump on this deal if you live in Baltimore and want these! They are indeed super, after reading so many people bitch about these DVDS i thought they'd be terrible, but just the opposite, the picture is cleaned up and very nice. and menus very pretty!

SO I lost my orignial post again, so this may be confusing as re do it quickly, thanks to the few ppl who helped me make up my mind to get these. Now the only thing i must do is hide them from my girlfriend, she'd flip if she knows i spend 60 dollars on some dorky TV show the 60's LOL (laughing on line), but as long as can keep them hidden wow I am a happy bear indeed!!! Peace , happy lent!

Where in the world did you find them for that price?

I just bought all three seasons and paid at least twice that. :(

Oh.....you'll find the time....and keep them in plain sight and convert the girlfriend, too.

Ha, see I knew there were still people who would appreciate the DVDs. Everyone is touting the Blu-Rays, but the DVDs still have appeal.

The Local Movie store in the Mall here has had the Original Sets (1-3) available for $19.99 for a while. I got the one missing from my collection under that sale and now own all three seasons of classic Star Trek!
