PaulN6,
I was thinking about the following
I. Character Development and Storyline
I already named the characters, some are off the shelf characters, but not all are -- while I listed their age and ranks; I really didn't list much else so I think it would be smart to come up with some details about them, at least physical characteristics.
As for storyline development, I haven't really gone into elaborate details about the storyline, though it would be interesting for some of the plot to involve an undercurrent of corruption sweeping the Federation right on up to the top. Obviously what has been established is that the story would start right as the Enterprise has undergone it's 18-month refit. I have thought about a sub-plot which would involve the USS Constitution having underwent a refit starting in 2268 for use as a propulsion systems testbed (in Court Martial I think there was a diagram which showed that the USS Constitution was undergoing refit) and much of the research conducted would be applied to the USS Enterprise as well as other vessels.
II. Aliens, Technology, and Special Effects
Aliens: I saw the TV show Stargate Atlantis recently, and I'd have to say the show has provided some inspiration for me in terms of special effects, technology and aliens. While I don't want to alter the aliens in Star Trek in any significant way, I was just wondering if you noticed any vague resemblences between the Wraiths in Stargate Atlantis, and the Romulans in Star Trek: Post TNG? I could be wrong but the fact that they have a slight greenish gray hue, and they have a similar grooving pattern on the head. What would the general opinion be about the Romulans having a few Wraith characteristics.
Special Effects: The transporter effect in Star Gate: Atlantis, was similar to ST:TNG but faster, and since teleportation should be very rapid, this looks like a useful feature, though I'd prefer a transporter effect similar to ST:TMP.
Technology: This only tangentially pertains to Stargate Atlantis. I remember the ship firing it's beam-weapons and rapidly cutting apart a Replicant ship. Then I thought about Star Trek. In TOS, those phaser weapons were devastatingly destructive compared even to Star Trek Post TMP. There was one episode, which I believe was called "That Which Survives" and it involves Captain Kang's damaged D-7 being destroyed by the Enterprise: One heavy phaser salvo blasted the unshielded ship (practically vaporized it) apart; In "The Ultimate Computer", the USS Excalibur was shot with a full phaser blast while at low forcefield power, the single blast partially got through the shields and still killed everybody onboard and seemed to damage the ship to a serious extent. The Phasers in TMP were even more powerful than in TOS and yet there were numerous instances of ships pounding each other back and forth with phaser blasts and the ship just getting burned a little bit (TWOK, GEN)
