Star Trek in other Languages

I don't know how Sirtis sounds now but the first time I heard her natural voice she had a slight cockney accent lol

The first time I saw Star Trek was when I came to university in England a few years ago, and I was able to understand it pretty well. I eventually found it in my mother tongue: Greek, or rather, in Greek subtitles. English/American shows are normally not dubbed in Greek (although Latin American shows are, for some reason). I noticed the same differences as others: the names were normally not translated, some American idioms were either not translated or translated into very awkward sounding Greek, and sometimes the translation paraphrased what the characters said - translating two or three lines of dialogue into one sentence. To be honest, I am happy I can understand English to such a degree that I do not have to read the Greek subtitles, otherwise Star Trek would have remained enjoyable, but also been more confusing. If I ever do not understand what an actor said, I put on the English subtitles and read it, this negates people's accents making it difficult for them to be understood.

I can't watch Star Trek dubbed in languages other than English, as the mouth movements and voices just seem so off to me. I do often watch them with Spanish subtitles, though. Don't know how or why, but I think because my inner monologue is in either Spanish or Galician that I find it easier to read subtitles that way. Though, if someone were to make an edition of TNG with Galician subtitles, that would be amazing, but I'm not holding my breath.

^ just like me! I can't stand the Spanish dubbed version... it's better than the Spanish one from Latin America though, at least the translation.

I was just pleasantly surprised to learn that my new blu ray collection of the first ten movies has both dubbing and subtitles in German, as well as a few other languages. Just watched a few scenes and it's actually immediately useful in remembering vocabulary and at the same time not boring at all.
