The first time I saw Star Trek was when I came to university in England a few years ago, and I was able to understand it pretty well. I eventually found it in my mother tongue: Greek, or rather, in Greek subtitles. English/American shows are normally not dubbed in Greek (although Latin American shows are, for some reason). I noticed the same differences as others: the names were normally not translated, some American idioms were either not translated or translated into very awkward sounding Greek, and sometimes the translation paraphrased what the characters said - translating two or three lines of dialogue into one sentence. To be honest, I am happy I can understand English to such a degree that I do not have to read the Greek subtitles, otherwise Star Trek would have remained enjoyable, but also been more confusing. If I ever do not understand what an actor said, I put on the English subtitles and read it, this negates people's accents making it difficult for them to be understood.
