Star trek in Lego

Greetings all -

I have seen a few threads here regarding Lego but most of them are quite old. I was just wondering if anyone here has produced their own Trek models in Lego and, if so, whether you do so with actual bricks or do it virtually in Lego Digital Designer?

Being an old-timer, I prefer the real bricks but I have done one or two cool things in LDD. Ultimately, if I had enough time, room, and money, I'd love to try reproducing Matt Jeffries' model of the TOS standing sets from Desilu Stage 9 in minifig scale. However, I think that would break me and I'd probably have to give up a whole room in my house (so I'd be divorced as well!). Just for giggles though, I tried a section of corridor in LDD and this is what I came up with:

I would love to see pics of anything the other fans here have done! Anyone willing to share?

It has always bothered me that Lego never pursued a license with Paramount to create Lego Star Trek kits.
It always bothered me that Lego went after rights and licenses to do Star Wars, but never did the same with Star Trek.
When I was younger, I did do a Lego bridge set that was sized to use the original Mego figures.
No pics of this, but for the times (early-mid 1970's) I did a very good job with this. It didn't have the depth of details, but only the basic components and shapes. It looked very much like the bridge. I had all of the basic color bloclks to do it! Black, white, red and blue blocks. I made the upper screens of each console different color square areas (either yellow or black to sort of give the idea the screen was on or off. The captain's chair even spun around!
I did plenty of TOS Enterprise Lego versions and did a very good job with creating lego versions of the Communicator, Phaser and Tricorder. My best effort was creating a really well-done Lego tricorder!
I wish I had pics of these from those days:(
Back then, Lego had very few "specialty" bricks. It's not like today's Lego where they'll mold more accurate approximations/Lego versions of the more realistic shapes of something recognizable. I was able to do some really great and neat stuff with what they had back then.
You really had to get creative with those blocks and think outside the box, sometimes.
It was using those blocks as a kid that made me want to go into engineering/draughting, art and design in the first place.
I miss those times.

I never gave it a thought before, but you're right. Star Wars kits all over the place, but nothing from any Trek series or movie. I dont blame them for not doing the movies, they mostly suck, but nothing from any series ever? Strange.

Nascence, I agree with you that half the fun was the challenge of working with Lego's limited selection of shapes and colors in the 60's and 70's. My avatar is actually a TOS Enterprise bridge that I just built last year - but I did it in an attempt to recreate the Lego TOS bridges I had done as a kid (so that I could show my own children). I used the same basic approach I had back then...not too many specialized pieces. Here's a larger pic:

Sometime soon, I think I'd like to try it again and do so in minifigure scale and also using all the specialized bricks available today. We'll see. ;)

I was going to ask if you had a larger image that serves as your avatar. That is fantastic, made even more amazing since you employed generic bricks and did not rely upon a specialized kit.

Doctor Who is another property whose fans have frantically wished for a Lego license. That never came to be, but just this year, another company that makes "compatible" sets has released DW construction sets and "mini-figs".

I never got into Lego. That I didn't want to, but in 1969 my dad instead got me some other building block concept called Togg'les. They were manufactured for only 3 or 4 years, never gaining the popularity of Lego, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, etc. But just a couple of months ago, I felt compelled to purchase an item from the new "Alien Invasion" line, a tripod. While not licensed as such, it's the next best thing to being an "official" H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds" toy. It even has a capture "blister" akin to the "baskets" Wells described for his war machines. How cool is that?!

Sincerely,

Bill

Well, there was a Mega Bloks kit of the Enterprise-D. But it was Mega Bloks, not Lego, so I didn't touch it.

It's possible that the issue was with Paramount, not Lego, over ST licensing. Or the licensing expense with Paramount may simply not have been cost-effective for Lego. Still, I'd love to see them produce some Trek items regardless of the era.

And cblmc1296, that Lego bridge is AWESOME! :techman:

^^^ I am flattered. Thank you!

I am curious if anyone here has any good Lego Trek models. I'd love to see 'em if you got 'em! :)

i've built a mini-fig of the defiant and akira-class. the designs were someone else's, although i did have to modify the original defiant design since i didn't have a specialised piece, but it turned out okay. it's not ship but i made a phaser that lights up, http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=3863646
i made a bad version of the nx-01 once, and a bird of prey.

i've built other ships not trek related (although one has warp nacelles) you can see them here: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=362896

there are alot of great lego trek models that are very detailed and impressive, far better than my skills with lego.

epic and awesome Star Trek Lego stuff here :) :techman:

I bought the Mega Blocks Ent D it was fun and awesome to build :)

I like the phaser a lot! Really good job!!

thanks, i've got more pics of it that should be enough to make so you can make your own version. just click the "up" icon from the link i posted.

Head over to the My MOC pages and search Star Trek. There is a lot of kewl stuff there. I am in there with a model I call the Fek'lhr Attack Fighter.

Yes, there is some great stuff at MOCpages.com!

I have a few over there as well. Although I haven't put my new one up there yet. I'll post it here though, in case anyone's interested.

BTW, DestinyCaptain, I followed your link above and it failed. I'd like to check out your MOCs. What's your name on MOCpages?

I forgot to say thank you. So... Thank you!! :)

I created a research starbase with a power generation/research lab loosely based on the TMP Enterprise engine room:

Funny thing, only the other day I loaded up the most accurate free model I could find of the Enterprise 1701 into 3DS Max, and actually tried to build an accurate virtual Lego model of the Enterprise. I adjusted the scale to fit the parts I planned to use, and it would have been roughly 2ft long at the scale I'm using.

Unfortunately, I wasn't all too happy with any of the methods I tried for the saucer section. Circles are the enemy of Lego.
