Door Question

Yuri Nikolayev

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
So here’s something I’ve been thinking about lately… the heavy style of doors used on the Holodecks or the cargo bays…

I’d ASSUME that those doors are heavier to evoke security. Obviously, a lot of valuable things could be in the cargo bays. And one should expect a measure of privacy in the Holodecks. But why aren’t the heavy doors used in either engineering, or the transporter room? Both rooms are home to both sources of great and intense energies, and house equipment that emits great and intense energies. But all you have with the transporter room is a wider standard door, and in the case of engineering, no doors - just corridors leading right into it.

IDK… I guess I’m just feeling that the heavy doors should be used in more spaces. Thoughts?

Just because the doors appear thin doesn't mean they're easy to break through?

Main Engineering does have at least one heavy emergency door (maybe two?), though we only see it used on relatively rare occasions.

I just assume that the big doors are in places wherever the need might arise for things bigger than people to pass thru them. It's about size more than security.

And if you're wondering why you'd need large scale doors for holodecks, when we mostly only see people pass thru them, consider that they might also be able to serve as large scale replicator units.

As we've seen with some holodecks items, replication is used in there to create actual real things.

Exactly… the same technologies utilized by the Holodecks are the same as the transporter… Geordi and Barclay have even stated as much.

I've been wondering why such a secure door has 3 slits you can sometimes see through :D
IIRC, they were black most of the time, but then white in TATV

Yup the whole matter/energy conversion business, that they've got a handle on, is at work in transporters, replicators, holodecks, & I'd assume waste reclamation.

I'd have thought you'd have seen the crew use the holodecks for wardrobe shopping more often. It's got an endless database of stuff, that you could "try on" instantly. You could have a holographic display showing how you look at all angles in them, & then when you're done grab go with them

Meanwhile, their outfits are often terrible IMHO :guffaw:
Perhaps those large doors are like airlock doors and the rooms in question can have variable atmosphere or even depressurize
That's a good point too. You might even be able to go Zero G or vacuum in the holodeck,
