Here's a question for discussion, and a poll associated with it.

We've all heard the soundtrack albums for STII and III for years. Lots of blockbuster films have gotten the royal treatment for their soundtracks (Star Wars, Superman, etc.) Even ST:TMP got an expanded edition (with numerous delays) back in '99.

So: I suppose this, does anyone think it's time for an expanded release of ST:II and ST:III?

And no... James Horner is not my favorite composer, but these are good scores.

I'd get these scores in a heartbeat.

I really want to hear the music where the Enterprise rises above the Reliant and destroys her. Terrell's suicide would be cool, too.

These two scores are two of my holy grails (along with an expanded Star Trek V and Alan Silvestri's score for Back to the Future which has never been officially released).

I'd love for this to happen but it would be very expensive, what with re-use fees, union fees, etc. Paramount doesn't seem interested but you can always write to GNP Crescendo, Varese Sarabande, or one of the other specialty soundtrack companies (like Intrada, La-La Land, Film Score Monthly, Prometheus, etc.).

In retrospect, it's amazing we ever got an expanded release of the TMP score (which is still missing some material). With Star Wars and Superman, those scores were recorded in England (and parts of Superman IV in Germany I think) so the fees weren't as high as they'd be if the scores were recorded in the states.

On the other hand, we finally got expanded releases of the Indiana Jones scores (Paramount films but probably more under Lucas' control) so anything can happen. :)

Without question I would love an expanded release.

I would LOVE to hear the clean music version from TWOK- of the scene where Kirk and company are pod traveling to the Enterprise in drydock. That is some of my favorite stuff. That short little diddy as Kirk assumes command is also pretty pleasant. Those are the definite gems I would love. I honestly can't think of much else that stands out as anything but filler (Like the scene change from Chekov/Khan on Reliant's bridge, over to Kirk/Saavik in the Turbolift) But don't get me wrong... I love TWOK's filler! :D

<Post edit: Ooo, I forgot about Terrell's death and the Reliant's last bash from behind. Good ones Indysolo!>

Star Trek III has one awesome piece I would drool for; as the Klingons discuss their recently obtained Genesis intelligence, and the swooping scene change as Grissom arrives at the newly formed planet. Always loved that bit. There is some old TOS theme in it, which might be why I like it.

And who wouldn't prefer that jazzy little piece played in McCoy's nightclub over that 80's synth/rock version of the main theme they put on the original release? Not sure who was actually responsible for that bit in the film however.

There is also some nice stuff as Enterprise returns to Genesis; a nice moody piece that helps build the tension of the unseen menace, but the current soundtrack skips right to Kruge's battle maneuvers. Come to think of it, I don't think the destruction of the Enterprise or the Genesis finale/escape are on the soundtrack at all. I think they did a much bigger disservice to TSFS than TWOK. Granted they were both made back when LPs were the ruling time factor.

Of course with LPs out of the equation, having the tracks in order might also be a plus! :D

Since there are upcoming plans to re-release all the films (probably to coincide with the new movie's release or somewhere thereabouts) it would be cool if the new ones had a music-only track mixed in 5.1 audio.

Yeah, we thought that about the laserdiscs too, back when. Music only tracks, well-researched supplements ... But this is Paramount (say it like, 'this is sparta' and cringe)

The LOST IN SPACE sounding music when the klings come aboard the E in III and make their way to the bridge is a cue I'd like ... in TWOK, all of the final torp battle music (not just the sneaky pete rise up, but the followups, when they blow the nacelle off) ... best unreleased 'trek' music is the BLACK SUNDAY John Williams music that is in the first 'long' TMP trailer ... I love that music, always have, but only messed-up BLACK SUNDAY suites include it.

Come to think of it, I don't think the destruction of the Enterprise or the Genesis finale/escape are on the soundtrack at all.
Check out recordings of "Romeo and Juliet" by Sergei Prokofiev. Specifically, listen to the the cue titled "Juliet's Funeral". You'll also hear the inspiration for the music used when Kirk confronts McCoy in Spock's quarters.

I'd pick these up in a heartbeat. If somebody wanted to save space, you could probably put everything essential from both scores on two discs. Most of the important TWOK score (out of the strange omissions of three tracks--the arrival at the Enterprise, Spock's funeral, and the finale without Nimoy's narration) is already on disc anyway, as far as my ears can tell.

But this is Paramount we're talking about. It's a miracle that decent bootlegs for films 1, 6, 8, 9, and 10 have found there way out, and the legitimate expanded release of TMP is a once in a lifetime disc out of Paramount's clutches, if you ask me.

Would LOVE to be proven wrong, though. And would pay for it, too.

Yes it has.

I own it, albeit on cassette.

Maybe it was only released in Australia and not the US.

Are you sure you're not referring to the regular soundtrack album, which includes a couple cues from the score?

This may be the same one. It had some music but it also had those annoying songs on it, you know, because us soundtrack collectors REALLY wanted the source songs played on a radio in a scene for eight seconds, rather than the orchestral music.....right?!?

I hated when they started doing that. It meant we never got a full release of "The Goonies" music, some of my ALL TIME favourite movie music.

In regards to the BTTF soudntrack, that must be the one you are referring to.

No one can replace jerry goldmith (RIP) he was one and only who'd do the justice to any Star Trek Soundtrack, sorry, but that's how I feel about this :)

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread -- but for those interested, this past year Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan received the updated, expanded soundtrack album treatment from Film Score Monthly.

I own and quite enjoy the album; the guys at FSM did a fantastic job.

Also, there was an updated Back To The Future album done as well, which was released back in October (?)

Edit to add: There is also an updated release of The Goonies as well.
